There's a famous version of "Et Mimi" by Jean Sablon. Not yet on Youtube, but it's on various cds.

The sheet music credits one Jacques LaRue with the French lyrics; Jimmy Kennedy and Nat Simon with the English lyrics and music.

Here's a link to an old ebay entry for the sheet music

Subject: Lyr Add: ET MIMI (from André Claveau)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 19 Oct 11 - 07:58 PM

I didn't have to look far to find this, at www.paroles-musique.com:

ET MIMI
[As sung by] André Claveau

Subject: Lyr Add: AND MIMI (from Dick Haymes)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 19 Oct 11 - 07:31 PM

AND MIMI
As sung by Dick Haymes, 1947

On the Rue de la Paix
There was once a cabaret
And Mimi.
As the night went along
There was suddenly a song
And Mimi.
All the world seemed to say
That they loved the cabaret
And Mimi,
But I knew that when she'd see me,
Mimi'd sing for me alone.

Came an Apache with a passion
For dancing with the one that I adore,
Taught her to dance in his fashion,
And for me she's singing no more.

On the Rue de la Paix
There was once a cabaret
And Mimi.
Now I'm sitting sad and dreamy
Just for Mimi and her song.

[Also recorded by Mel Torme, Johnny Thompson, Charlie Spivak & His Orchestra, The Dinning Sisters, Frankie Carle, and Ray Dorey, all around 1947.]

[There is also a French version, ET MIMI, recorded by Jean Sablon, but I'm not fluent enough to transcribe more than this:]

Dans la Rue de la Paix
Il y avait un cabaret
Et Mimi....

I found a recording of "And Mimi" at Youtube.com. Here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqxM8l03KIo

If the link doesn't work, just go to youtube.com and enter Dick Haymes into the search field and several pages will come up. I found the recording on the 6th page.

Wikipedia has a brief bio of Haymes. Kinda interesting.

Cheers
JJ

To my very solid memory of the time slot it was definitely from prior to 1950. 1947 (mentioned a couple of times) sounds like a good guess.
I had always imagined it to to be about an ex GI reminiscing about his time in Paris after World War Two.
My memory of the words are very similar to what "Toadfrog" has:
On the Rue de la Paix,
       There was once a cabaret,
       and Mimi.
       Mimi sad and dreamy
       Sang for me alone.

Somehow, Mark, I don't think it's this one (click). I'd still like to see the lyrics of the Jimmy Kennedy song. He wrote some great songs, but he's not included in any of the lyrics anthologies I've found.

I just had to say Mark, that I can totally understand how the place you heard this would be memorable!! I go to BMC, and we just call it The Point now, but it gathers students and artists like none other. So I just had to say, as I sit at home, on the other side of the country, that it was very bizarre to hear about the point.. or the main point, as I guess it used to be called.

I saw the thread, and said, "Hey, I think I do know that song", then I opened the thread and realized that I know about the song because I remembered the thread--

Anyway, maybe we should look for Emmett "Robby" Robinson--Also, it might help to try to find an old Main Point schedule to find the time and date of the John Denver performance--also, it may be possible that
someone somewhere taped the actual performance, so it might be worth checking the John Denver fansites--Excessive? Maybe, but you've been looking for two and a half years, so this has gone beyond being just a casual inquiry, and will continue to plague you til you've found the song--

Well, I tried a Google search and struck out, but I did find some interesting tidbits. Did you know that rue de la Paix is the equivalent of Boardwalk in the French version of Monopoly? It's because there are a large number of jewelers and other high quality purveyors on that street, including Cartier and Dunhill. There was also a song called "On the rue de la Paix" that was in the 1937 musical film, "The King and the Chorus Girl"...but that's not the one I'm looking for. (That film, by the way, came out a scant 3 months before King Edward abdicated to marry a commoner, so when it was released in the UK, the title was changed to "Romance is Sacred". And it was co-written by none other than Groucho Marx!) Then there's this delightful poem by Robert Service, The Philistine and the Bohemian. And there's also this poem:

A handsome young bastard named Ray
Was conceived on the Rue de La Paix
According to law
He can name you his ma
But as for his Pa, je ne sais

Anyway, I hope somebody can identify the song. I have work to do.

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks, folks, but no cigar...yet. The song was definitely called "Rue de la Paix", the singer even spelled "paix" for me. And it sounded like a sixties song, not forties. So we'll try again. Somewhere, out in the Mudcat...is that song.

Aloha,
Mark

O.k. Jimmy Kennedy has a website here. He was an Irishmen and a Doctor of Literature. Had he been an American I would say a Tin Pan Alley great. Wrote "South of the Border," "Red Sails on the Sunset," and "Teddy Bears' Pick Nick"! But nowhere could I find lyrics to "And Mimi."
Amazon .com claims to have books about Kennedy. Maybe there.

I think you are looking for a song named And Mimi, vintage of 1947. Astonishingly, I can't find the lyrics on Googol. I can't recall much of it

On the Rue de la Paix there was once a cabaret - And Mimi! . . . .
Now I'm sad and dreamy, over Mimi . . .

Wow! Not much!

All I remember (we're talking over 30 years here...) is "on the Rue de la Paix" as the last line of either the song or the chorus. I seem to recall it as kind of a mood piece about a man who wasn't happy with his life. That would have resonated with me at not quite 16--I wonder if I'd like the song at all now! I remember going up to Robby after the performance and asking him about the song, and I do recall him telling me that was the title. He told me the name of the songwriter, too, but I sure can't remember that. Thanks for trying.

Aloha,
Mark

I asked this question a year ago and got no response. But maybe some of the new people will know. In 1969 I went to the Main Point near Philadelphia to hear this guy who had just left the Chad Mitchell Trio, named John Denver. The opening act was a singer named, as I recall, Emmett "Robby" Robinson. He sang a song called "Rue de la Paix". I remember liking the song a lot, but haven't heard it since. Ring any bells with anyone? It's not in the DT. (And if anyone wants to turn this into a nostalgia thread for the Main Point, so much the better.)

Aloha,
Mark
