From: GUEST,ivorlen Date: 07 Oct 10 - 01:28 AM To my very solid memory of the time slot it was definitely from prior to 1950. 1947 (mentioned a couple of times) sounds like a good guess. I had always imagined it to to be about an ex GI reminiscing about his time in Paris after World War Two. My memory of the words are very similar to what "Toadfrog" has: On the Rue de la Paix, There was once a cabaret, and Mimi. Mimi sad and dreamy Sang for me alone. |

I go to BMC, and we just call it The Point now, but it gathers students and artists like none other. Maybe, but you've been looking for two and a half years, so this has gone beyond being just a casual inquiry, and will continue to plague you til you've found the song-- |

Did you know that rue de la Paix is the equivalent of Boardwalk in the French version of Monopoly? It's because there are a large number of jewelers and other high quality purveyors on that street, including Cartier and Dunhill. There was also a song called "On the rue de la Paix" that was in the 1937 musical film, "The King and the Chorus Girl"...but that's not the one I'm looking for. (That film, by the way, came out a scant 3 months before King Edward abdicated to marry a commoner, so when it was released in the UK, the title was changed to "Romance is Sacred". And it was co-written by none other than Groucho Marx!) Then there's this delightful poem by Robert Service, The Philistine and the Bohemian. And there's also this poem: A handsome young bastard named Ray Was conceived on the Rue de La Paix According to law He can name you his ma But as for his Pa, je ne sais Anyway, I hope somebody can identify the song. Had he been an American I would say a Tin Pan Alley great. Wrote "South of the Border," "Red Sails on the Sunset," and "Teddy Bears' Pick Nick"! But nowhere could I find lyrics to "And Mimi." Amazon .com claims to have books about Kennedy. Maybe there. |

From: Mark Cohen Date: 25 May 01 - 11:17 PM All I remember (we're talking over 30 years here...) is "on the Rue de la Paix" as the last line of either the song or the chorus. I seem to recall it as kind of a mood piece about a man who wasn't happy with his life. That would have resonated with me at not quite 16--I wonder if I'd like the song at all now! I remember going up to Robby after the performance and asking him about the song, and I do recall him telling me that was the title. In 1969 I went to the Main Point near Philadelphia to hear this guy who had just left the Chad Mitchell Trio, named John Denver. The opening act was a singer named, as I recall, Emmett "Robby" Robinson. He sang a song called "Rue de la Paix". I remember liking the song a lot, but haven't heard it since. Ring any bells with anyone? It's not in the DT. (And if anyone wants to turn this into a nostalgia thread for the Main Point, so much the better.) Aloha, Mark |
