Happy Birthday!

Moondog (Louis Thomas Hardin)

The landmark New York City street artist
was born 5/26/1916

(AMG bio: )

Gunman, John Wesley Hardin

was ALSO born on 5/26 in 1853

(d8/19/1894, when Marshal John Selman shot him in the
back of the head at the Acme Saloon, El Paso, TX)

I have no information he & Moondog were related.

The old songs, the old stars,
The world so golden then!
The hand so tender to a child
Had killed so many men.
He died a hard death long ago,
Before the Road came in.
The night before he swung, he sang
To his mandolin.

"Spanish Johnny" by Willa Cather,
see Lomax & Lomax, American Ballads & Folk Songs, p123

BBC radio4
Moondog: Sound of New York

"Huey Morgan returns to his home city to learn more about Moondog, his life and his music. He discovers how Moondog went on to influence other musicians, including Phillip Glass, and how his work is continuing to be used and adapted to this day."

"The programme also includes rare recordings of Moondog speaking in the early 1980s."
