Not really a folk question but I wonder if any of our American friends can answer this one. I'm reading a book by a US author, James Grisham and it talks about a lady having 'gray bangs' in her eyes. What on earth are 'bangs'- sounds painful! Are they what we call 'flecks' in the UK?? Grateful for any info....

Hair at the front top of her forehead long enough to touch her eyes. Known in North America as "bangs" (expression). More common with younger children (girls) as in "trimming her bangs".

Carol you're a scream. The best bangs I ever saw were on my hero Prince Valiant. Tony Curtis put an end to my hero-worship when he said (in the movie) "Yohnda stands da castle of my faddah".

Of course, to a bluegrass enthusiast who spends time on the 'net, "Bangs" is a much more ominous term....especially if one's travels take one to Salt Lake.
