Subject: Cooter Brown From: GUEST,khandu Date: 29 May 01 - 10:57 PM All my life (so far), I have heard of people being "as drunk as Cooter Brown". In the early eighties, I moved to Texas, and was surprised to hear the same phrase used there. I had thought it was a local (Mississippi) saying. Now, I ask. How far has this saying reached? Have you ever heard it? And, above all, who was Cooter Brown that he should gain such infamy? If you have not heard this saying, do you have other/similar sayings that you have always heard? Also, if you have not heard of Cooter Brown, spread it around! Let's make him a world renowned drunk! khandu |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: catspaw49 Date: 29 May 01 - 11:02 PM I dunno' bro..........Around here, "cooter" is now popular as another word for female genitalia. So, I suppose you could have Cooter Red, Cooter Blonde, Cooter Black, etc.........Seems like the wrong orifice to be pouring alchohol in though................. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: GUEST,John Gray / Australia Date: 29 May 01 - 11:14 PM There'a a bar in New Orleans, near the university, called Cooter Brown's. Good as any place to get drunk. JG / F.M.E. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 29 May 01 - 11:29 PM In the south (USA), a cooter is a turtle. African origin. This may explain the name of the Big Easy bar. CHRYSEMYS CONCINNA is the Florida cooter. But all my erudition (ahem!) is probably off the point. I seem to recall, but very dimly, a song about a man called Cooter Brown and a drinking spree. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 30 May 01 - 12:08 AM If you go to the Baylor University website, it is in a list of phrases being searched for by a Mr. Fraser. He had also heard "Drunk as Cooter Brown's third cousin." 1967 was a date he had, but thought it was earlier. No answers. Yahoo search turned up someone else looking for the origin. There is a musician in the south who is recording under the name Cooter Brown. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: Kim C Date: 30 May 01 - 09:46 AM Oh yes! I have heard of Cooter Brown. I'd also like to know just when exactly was Hector a pup, and how much is a shit worth. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: catspaw49 Date: 30 May 01 - 10:28 AM Hector was a pup 9 years ago. The price of shit varies with the quality and around here that means it goes for about 3 cents a ton. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: Jim the Bart Date: 30 May 01 - 10:35 AM I've heard it used here in Chicago, but mostly in the C'n'W bars. I have also heard the term "cooter" used to refer to a woman's privates (not by any specific woman, though). I have also heard that this was the derivation of Ry(e) Cooder's stage name. Does anyone know if there's any truth to that? |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: Kim C Date: 30 May 01 - 11:03 AM Thanks for clearing that up Spaw. I knew I could count on you! ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: Giac@Brian's Date: 30 May 01 - 12:08 PM A Google search yields a LOT of people who want to know who Cooter Brown was, but none who seems to know. I've heard "drunk as," or "drunker than Cooter Brown" in many parts of Arkansas, West, Middle and East Tennessee, Chicago, Kentucky, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi. Interestingly, in a little valley in the Smokies, the infamous drunk is called Cootie Brown. Cootie is an expression for female genetalia in that valley, too. Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: catspaw49 Date: 30 May 01 - 12:16 PM Hmmm......Geez Giac, we use "cooties" as to mean lice/bedbugs/etc...........So having cooties on your cooter could be serious! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: GUEST Date: 30 May 01 - 03:20 PM Gosh, Spaw - if that's the place the booze is poured, it gives a hole new meaning to "Candy's dandy, but liquor's quicker" !! |
Subject: RE: BS: Cooter Brown From: GUEST,khandu Date: 30 May 01 - 11:40 PM Cooter Brown was pre-Dukes of Hazzard, pre-1967, and pre-Ry Cooder. I also have heard nookie referred to as "cooter", yet, I think C.B. is a different cooter. And, I'll bet that cooter is cuter than Cooter. Feels better, anyway. :P khandu |
