Subject: Vocal training resouces?

Good evening, everyone!

I'm working on putting together a basic guide of *very* basic vocal strengthening and training exercises.

I've been combing the 'cat for info (and a very good amount there is), but am also looking for anyone with possible internet resource links - a fruitless night on Google resulted in my discovering that there are approximately 7,000 singing instructors, all of whom promise to have you singing like the fat opera star of your choice, and all of whom are charging around $100+ for their book.

Honestly, I don't need anything THAT detailed. All I'm really looking for is "a few simple exercises" that will help to provide tone for an amateur group of singers.

Help will be appreciated!

SeanM

What age are your singers? Visualization exercises work great for adults, but not so much with the grade-school set. (what's a diaphragm?)

Should have mentioned that...

It's a primarily adult group, with the one child (that I know of) involved having been around long enough to understand the concepts.

Thanks!

Thanks, Rich...

I've been reading that thread, and a few others. I was hoping that someone would have a link for some sort of online reference. As it is, I'll be hitting the library in search of more information. I'd like to have as many sources as possible before I start writing.

I'm starting to wonder if there ARE any online resources for vocal coaching tips. Considering the relative wealth of information (erroneous and not) out there on pretty much any other topic under the sun, I'm kinda amused that on this one I can only find people out to make a quick buck (OK, quick $100).

Sean, send an email to my voice coach, Suzanne Gorder, and she will answer your questions for free. Her website is http://www.mcn.net/~gorders She will also do private consultation through the mail with cassette tape if anyone wants to send her a recording of their voice and work on specific individual vocal lessons.

I don't know whether "voice coach" is the resource I need, but I would love to learn to roll my R's. I'm 70, and for the last 50 years I've wished I could do that when I sing. There are some songs that just seem to beg for rolled R's, and I've never been able to do it.

Dave, pretend you are about 3 years old, in a pile of dirt in the back yard, with four toy trucks set up on the dirt road you've built. Relax your tongue and the muscles around your mouth, and make the truck sound... bbbbrrrrrooooomm, bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrroooommm, ;-) (this isn't anything I've been told to do, I just thought the visualization might help, ha ha...)

Update - you can contact my voice coach for private lessons through the internet: Szdngorder@aol.com

Email to her regarding long distance consulation by cassette tapes, or by emailing mp3 files.

Her website has moved (and may move again within the next 6 months, so I will update the link). Suzanne Gorder's web site.
