Subject: haiku crash notices From: GUEST,--seed (from school) Date: 31 May 01 - 04:06 PM I haven't been around much lately, but I thought you might appreciate the following. My niece (my nephew's exwife: their marriage crashed on the internet) sent me the following, and as I have much experience with computer crashes wiping out all my data, it seemed very close to home: In Japan, they have replaced the impersonal and unhelpful Microsoft error messages with Haiku poetry messages. Haiku poetry has strict construction rules. Each poem has only three lines, 17 syllables: five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, five in the third. Haiku is used to communicate a timeless message often achieving a wistful, yearning and powerful insight through extreme brevity -- the essence of Zen:
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------
The Website you seek --------------------------------------------
Chaos reigns within. -----------------------------------------------
Program aborting: ------------------------------------------------
Windows NT crashed. --------------------------------------------------
Yesterday it worked. ---------------------------------------------------
First snow, then silence. ---------------------------------------------------
With searching comes loss --------------------------------------------------
The Tao that is seen -------------------------------------------------
Stay the patient course. ---------------------------------------------------
A crash reduces ---------------------------------------------------
Three things are certain: ---------------------------------------------------
You step in the stream, ---------------------------------------------------
Out of memory. --------------------------------------------------
Having been erased, --------------------------------------------------
Serious error. |

Subject: RE: haiku crash notices From: SDShad Date: 01 Jun 01 - 06:22 PM And, as someone pointed out in the thread linked to above, these particular haikus do in fact have authors; someone meticulously removed all their names before sending them out on the never-ending chainmail grapevine. Thanks for posting them, seed; I loved 'em. But let's give credit where due; I thought I'd go ahead and post the link to Salon given in the other thread, so that people can read these marvelous haikus from their original source. Chris |
