This is a compilation of this song from roughstock, etc., but it seems sort of messy to me -- wrong chords? wrong words here and there. Can anyone improve on this?

Sorry, the chords should be spread out over the line. The small "c" is a misprint, not a c minor. yours, Peter T.

The version I found in the Ultimate Country Fake Book has an odd repeat with long 1st & 2d endings.
It looks like maybe someone left out part of the chorus -
From the top of the CHORUS:

Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine
And I dare not drown my sor-row in the warm glow of your wine.
But you think I should be happy with your money and your name
And hide my-self in sorrow, while you play your cheatin' game

The fake book version doesn't have the second verse - so you're one-up there.

Not to look gift lyrics in the mouth, but most of these references are copies from the same roughstock site, and they are where I came in. The Mudcat one is not exactly reliable either, at least chord wise, typos, etc. There are now at least 3 versions, one of which is the original (or not). I fear this means a hunt for the sheetmusic (or at least a long talk with Skeeter Davis -- now wouldn't that be fun?)

Peter ... OK, I'm a complete dumbass, but what is it that's bothering you? The "versions" are virtually identical and scanning make the difference to some degree, but are you looking for whatever was the original...is that it? Or one that scans better? Or a third verse?

The chords are as Rick gave them. There is no A (which would be 2, not 5). I remember Dusty Springfield singing this with her brother many years ago.

I have to concur with Murray. I've sung that song now for well over twenty years. The 'weird' chords in the chorus are SO 'British Invasion'. I think The Springfields had a couple of other hits as well. Anybody remember? NOT the ones with just Dusty listed, but when they still were a band.

It has been granted a thirty minute extension so that we may recall the other Springfields songs as marty D requests. Off the top of my head, I recollect "Say I won't Be There", "Faraway Places", "Island of Dreams", "Breakaway", "Come on Home", "No Sad songs for Me". Doubtless there are others I have forgotten.

Found the sheet music from 1956. The corrected version I originally posted is the right one for the words (should however be sorrow, not sorrows). No third verse. Wonder where that came from?

Singers do always record as indicated by the
sheet music and various singers often alter the

I heard it in an open mike situation at U. of Oregon c.1966.

I suspect it was a commendable effort to keep from repeating the other verses; otherwise it's over rather quickly.
