Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: SILVER THREADS AND GOLDEN NEEDLES From: Peter T. Date: 01 Jun 01 - 09:38 AM This is a compilation of this song from roughstock, etc., but it seems sort of messy to me -- wrong chords? wrong words here and there. Can anyone improve on this? SILVER THREADS AND GOLDEN NEEDLES G CI grew up in faded gingham, where love's a sacred thing You grew up in silk and satin, where love's a passing game I know now you never loved me and I know I was a fool To think your pride would let you live by the golden rule |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Peter T. Date: 01 Jun 01 - 09:40 AM Sorry, the chords should be spread out over the line. The small "c" is a misprint, not a c minor. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Lin in Kansas Date: 01 Jun 01 - 11:00 AM John in Remote Kansas (JIRK) on Lin's unattended cookie The version I found in the Ultimate Country Fake Book has an odd repeat with long 1st & 2d endings. It looks like maybe someone left out part of the chorus - From the top of the CHORUS: Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine And I dare not drown my sor-row in the warm glow of your wine. But you think I should be happy with your money and your name And hide my-self in sorrow, while you play your cheatin' game Silver Threads and Golden Needles cannot mend this heart of mine And I dare not drown my sor-row in the warm glow of your wine. You can't buy my love with money for I never was that kind Silver Threads and Golden Needles Cannot mend this heart of mine. The fake book version doesn't have the second verse - so you're one-up there. Does this fit your tune better? |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 01 Jun 01 - 11:10 AM Peter, I don't know the second verse at all, but the lyrics of the verse and chorus seem fine to me. (stretching back several decades, now) |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 01 Jun 01 - 11:15 AM I found this site: Silver Threads & Golden Needles There, it also gives the authors as : Dick Reynolds and Jack Rhodes Hope that helps |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 01 Jun 01 - 11:17 AM So far, none of the other sites that I've found list that second verse. |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Jim Krause Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:33 PM I found the lyrics here in the DigiTrad, complete with the second verse. Ain't Mudcat great? Jim |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: JenEllen Date: 01 Jun 01 - 03:22 PM Lyrics and tab available here Three versions, the lyric ones contain full lyrics, the tab only has partial. ~J |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Chicken Charlie Date: 01 Jun 01 - 03:23 PM Mudcat for President! But there's another second verse. After I agonize and get it wrong, Sorcha will no doubt find it. All I recall of it right now is the last couplet:
.... Silver threads .... So make up something about steenking badches and a remote in every room, and we'll have another verse. CC |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Peter T. Date: 01 Jun 01 - 04:29 PM Not to look gift lyrics in the mouth, but most of these references are copies from the same roughstock site, and they are where I came in. The Mudcat one is not exactly reliable either, at least chord wise, typos, etc. There are now at least 3 versions, one of which is the original (or not). I fear this means a hunt for the sheetmusic (or at least a long talk with Skeeter Davis -- now wouldn't that be fun?) yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Jun 01 - 06:02 PM Peter ... OK, I'm a complete dumbass, but what is it that's bothering you? The "versions" are virtually identical and scanning make the difference to some degree, but are you looking for whatever was the original...is that it? Or one that scans better? Or a third verse? Spaw |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: GUEST Date: 01 Jun 01 - 08:03 PM Aren't the chords 1/4/5/6 [G/C/D/F]
vs 1/2/4/5 [G/C/D/A] ??? |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 01 Jun 01 - 08:14 PM The chords are as Rick gave them. There is no A (which would be 2, not 5). I remember Dusty Springfield singing this with her brother many years ago. Murray |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: marty D Date: 01 Jun 01 - 10:33 PM I have to concur with Murray. I've sung that song now for well over twenty years. The 'weird' chords in the chorus are SO 'British Invasion'. I think The Springfields had a couple of other hits as well. Anybody remember? NOT the ones with just Dusty listed, but when they still were a band. marty |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Peter T. Date: 02 Jun 01 - 11:56 AM Hi, CP, I am looking for the original. As some will tell you, I am a stickler for the right lyrics to pop songs. Folk songs, who knows. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Chicken Charlie Date: 02 Jun 01 - 01:13 PM I remembered the first half of the other verse, but I have a feeling that this thread has had its fifteen minutes of fame. |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 02 Jun 01 - 01:30 PM It has been granted a thirty minute extension so that we may recall the other Springfields songs as marty D requests. Off the top of my head, I recollect "Say I won't Be There", "Faraway Places", "Island of Dreams", "Breakaway", "Come on Home", "No Sad songs for Me". Doubtless there are others I have forgotten. Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Peter T. Date: 02 Jun 01 - 03:23 PM Found the sheet music from 1956. The corrected version I originally posted is the right one for the words (should however be sorrow, not sorrows). No third verse. Wonder where that came from? yours, Peter T. |
Subject: Chords Add: SILVER THREADS AND GOLDEN NEEDLES From: GUEST,Gene Date: 02 Jun 01 - 04:13 PM Found this arrangement in a 1974 Music book Singers do always record as indicated by the sheet music and various singers often alter the lyrics/chords to suit themselves ? 1/3/4/5/7 chord pattern?

Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: Chicken Charlie Date: 02 Jun 01 - 04:21 PM I heard it in an open mike situation at U. of Oregon c.1966.
Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine I suspect it was a commendable effort to keep from repeating the other verses; otherwise it's over rather quickly. CC |
Subject: RE: Silver Threads and Golden Needles?? From: WyoWoman Date: 03 Jun 01 - 12:57 PM I don't want your lonely condo, With remotes in every room. I don't need no stinking badches Or post-modern sense of gloom.
Well you think I should be happy Just to bring it up to date and all ... ww
