Subject: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: marty D Date: 01 Jun 01 - 11:02 AM I just read this in the morning paper and I can hardly believe it. I guess I just don't WANT to believe that someone who actually has 'moral authority' over others could say such a thing, but I guess I should just wise up, because stuff like this is evrywhere these days. Rabbi Reuven Levy said, after the terrible tragedy that killed twenty three wedding guests in Jerusalem a few days ago, that the dance floor may have collapsed because men and women were dancing together! He said "mixed dancing is INCEST and punishable by a divine death sentence" I'm still a bit stunned. He was the Rabbi MARRYING the couple! It's just so hard to hear stuff like that, and Rev. Ian Paisley's "Line Dancing is immoral" quote a few weeks ago. We're not immune to it here of course. Remember both Rev. Pat Robertson and Rev. Jerry Falwell implying for years on TV that AIDS was God's judgement on Gay people? I guess narrow-mindedness and ambition are hard to hold back. The Talaban's recent ban on women driving in Afghanistan is also odious, but somehow these other 'pronouncements' hit closer to home for me. Fundamentalists of every stripe sicken me. marty

Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Kim C Date: 01 Jun 01 - 11:52 AM I am learning to belly dance. If I go to hell, I'll go there happy. |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jun 01 - 12:28 PM And probably in good company. |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Rick Fielding Date: 01 Jun 01 - 12:35 PM I'm a confirmed "news junkie" Marty, and I just have to shake my head and hold my nose. I'm much more worried (as I've voiced ad nauseum here) about the many millions who take these idiots seriously. If I COULD dance, I'd happily do it on the graves of ALL of them. In the meantime......tell us more about your belly dancing Kim...sounds lovely! Rick |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: mousethief Date: 01 Jun 01 - 12:41 PM And probably healthy -- belly dancing is a lot of exercise! Mixed dancing is INCEST? Surely he means "fornication" right? Somebody buy him a dictionary, please. Why shouldn't a newly married couple dance with each other? Why shouldn't the married couples in the reception party dance with each other? This can't even remotely be considered "incest" or "fornication." And if (horror of horrors!) unmarried people in the reception party are dancing, whose business is that? Certainly not this guy's. What strikes me about these fire-and-brimstone types is that their "God" has very bad aim. In order to punish a handful of unmarried dancers, he kills a bunch of people who are dancing with their lawfully wedded spouses? Let us hope the world is not run by such a bumbling "God." A vengeful God is bad enough, but a vengeful God with bad aim and total disregard for "collateral damage" is hardly worthy of acknolwedgment, let alone worship. That's the way I see it. Alex |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Amos Date: 01 Jun 01 - 12:48 PM Oh, come on, Alex! God is omnipotent, for one thing, AND omnipresent. You're practically accusing him of shooting himself in the foot!! (Come to think of it if one is omnipresent, where does one aim to shoot oneself in the foot?)>p?I have serious doubts about your characterization of Him as having "bad aim" and "being bumbling". You see, what He must hjave known, and you and I of course could not know, is that EVERY ONE of the people on that dance floor had a good and sufficient reason for what happened to them, inscribed on His books. One of them had been masturbating that very night. At least three of them bought it under the "suffering a witch to live" clause. And so on. And given that you have gone public with what can only be construed as taking his name very much in Vain, I guess I should recopmmend you start checking your own floorboards, pal! This is NOT somebody you want to fuck around with!!! |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Don Firth Date: 01 Jun 01 - 12:54 PM Avoid the whole issue. Stick to horizontal dancing. |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: mousethief Date: 01 Jun 01 - 12:55 PM Amos, you don't get it. I'm not talking above about the God who exists. I'm talking about the "God" that this Rabbi believes in. Alex |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: DougR Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:05 PM Marty, I read that story in the paper this morning and had to read his statement twice. I just couldn't believe he said that! Faulty construction, pure and simple. DougR |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Clinton Hammond Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:07 PM I really hate religion! I'll be over here watching Kim dance, and thinking VERY unreligious thoughs!!! LOL!!! On the road to hell, I'm the guy drivin' the BUS! |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Kim C Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:13 PM Oh you guys! I just thought it would be fun. I like to dance. And yeah, you have to be able to use muscles to do it, and it is good for you. It's not really hard to learn. Since there's apparently not a teacher in my area I just bought some videos. Dancing is a great thing and I have to pity people who think otherwise. They are really missing something. Someday I want to learn Highland dancing. The local teacher told me I was too old. I'll show her. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:20 PM Reminds me of the old joke: Do you know why Southern Baptists object to people having sex standing up? … Because it might lead to dancing. |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: JenEllen Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:38 PM Goodonya Kim!!! It is fun, isn't it? If you want to continue, and are still without teacher, they have great videos available at one spirit I dunno if they have any for highland footwork...never looked. The ruby in my navel is just for you today, dear one.*bg* ~Jen |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Alice Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:42 PM For those who can appreciate the significance of the Hokey Pokey to the Mudcat forum, I just read this sad news on theispot illustrator's forum...
------
There was a great loss recently in the entertainment world. Larry LaPrise, the Detroit native who wrote the song "The Hokey Pokey", died last week at 83.
It was especially difficult for the family. They had trouble placing him in the casket.
They'd put his right leg in and......well, you know the rest.

Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Kim C Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:56 PM Cool! Where can I get a ruby for my navel? (actually I would prefer a sapphire...) |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: JenEllen Date: 01 Jun 01 - 02:59 PM I dunno...mine was inherited. My uncle used to tease my mum about having the perfect tummy to be a belly dancer, and got her the ruby as a joke. When I was born, he sent me perfect miniature to match hers. Ah, the treasures! I'll keep an eye out for sapphires! |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Rick Fielding Date: 01 Jun 01 - 05:07 PM Sad news Alice....but WHAT a legacy here on the Cat. Thanks. Kim....TOO OLD for Highland dancing!!?? Now granted, 14 year olds with perfect posture and those incredibly sincere looks on their faces have their place, but give me belly and Highland dancers WHO'VE LIVED! Clinton, I'm headin' the same way. Need a hand with the drivin'? How many points do we get if we run down Jimmy Swaggart? Rick |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Clinton Hammond Date: 01 Jun 01 - 05:38 PM LOL!! Hop on in Rick! Lemme know if ya spot him... I'll swerve and you can get him with the door... that way we won't have to stop and hose him out of the grill work... ;-) |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Don Firth Date: 01 Jun 01 - 06:27 PM To those who say dancing is a sin -- Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: GUEST,Dancing Mom, nonrepentant Date: 01 Jun 01 - 07:39 PM Well... guess I better board that bus, too. Scoot over, you guys. Too old for Highland Dancing? Yeah, right! Do it!! Throughout history, people (religious "leaders" are notorious) have taken a tragic event, blamed it on "God", and used the resulting fear to further their agenda of power or intolerance, preying on those who are hurting and struggling to make sense of what has happened to them. Dirty, dirty pool. Sharon |

Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Caitrin Date: 02 Jun 01 - 05:50 PM *sighs* I don't get the whole "dancing is a sin" thing. With all that goes on in the world today, if God has nothing better to worry about than dancing, we're in serious trouble. |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Don Firth Date: 02 Jun 01 - 07:59 PM I don't think God has a whole lot to do with it. The problem is that there are many strange people in this world who have nothing better to do in their lives than to stay awake nights and pace back and forth, eyes a-blaze, teeth a-gnash, pounding one fist into the other and agonizing over the possibility the someone, somehow, somewhere in the world might be having fun! Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Another sick 'dancing' quote. From: Caitrin Date: 02 Jun 01 - 11:25 PM And Heaven knows we don't want any of that "fun" stuff going on. Next thing you know, people'll be happy! |
