Subject: Songs for having your tonsils out?
From: Mrrzy
Date: 01 Jun 01 - 06:47 PM

Poor William. His adenoids are so big he can't breathe through his nose, and we just discovered that his tonsils are so very big that he can't breathe through his mouth either unless he's wide awake. So he's having both tonsils and adenoids out on July 20 (they call the operation T&A, so I guess in some ways he's starting young!). So I'm seeking both songs of comfort and cheer for wee ones (they just turned 6!) as well as stories of prior parents suffering through this terrible ordeal (since I'm actually sure Willie will be fine)... And Timothy, the family lyricist, says Hi too. He's fine.

Had mine out at 4; adenoids had grown into eustachian tubes (which may be one reason I can't hear). If they are twins, might as well get both done now; it's lots worse as an adult! Sorry, no songs, but lots of sympathy! Ice cream!!!

Aside--my brother wanted potato chips when he woke up from his!!

When I had mine out at age 5, all they had was VANILLA ice cream, and I HATED vanilla ice cream. Boy, was I angry. But worse than that, they also had somebody come around to do a blood test. I wanted no part of it. So she touched the little glass capillary tube to my fingertip, saying, "See? It doesn't hurt!". Mollified, I gave her my finger, and WHAM!!!! she jabbed me with that big sharp lancet. That was a bad thing to do to a five-year-old. Bottom line: don't say it's not going to hurt when it is. Instead, say it will hurt for a short time and focus on what will happen afterwards when it stops hurting.

I can't think of any songs offhand, but I'll think about it. Meanwhile, "Curious George Goes to the Hospital", while dated, is always fun. And Fred Rogers (Misterogers) has some good books.

If it's going to be done in a children's hospital, or a hospital that cares for lots of children, talk to the hospital's Child Life specialist about ways to make the experience as pleasant as possible. If it's a community hospital, talk to the operating room staff or whoever deals with social services. Also talk to the surgeon. And if the hospital tells you they don't have any special people or procedures for kids having surgery, find another hospital.

These days, most T&A's are done as day surgery procedures. This is good in some respects, but you have to be really clear on what you'll need to do at home, what to watch for, etc. Make sure your surgeon or her/his office staff give you clear and detailed instructions, and ask questions!

By the way, you will probably hear at some point from a well-meaning friend that T&A is "unnecessary surgery." That is partly true -- it's not done nearly as often as it was in the past. I probably refer fewer than 10 children a year for the surgery, while when I was growing up it seemed to be almost an obligatory rite of passage. But from your description of Willie, it sounds like he's definitely one who could benefit, so don't let the magazines worry you.

Aloha,
Mark

maybe not 'Gin boy, but she'll kick your ass on general principles.

Ain't it great to have a Doc around? Well penned there Mark and obviously good advice. I had mine out in those "Rites of Passage" days and then broke some bloodvessel that required they go back down and repair that too. It was a bummer.......and this was in the days of ether. I "saw" the same thing both times I went under........Jiminy Cricket dancing across the ocean waves singing "Deck the Halls".......very strange. My Dad could never stand ether and I remember him bending over to give me a kiss and turning this funny green color.......

William, you may have a sore throat afterwards, but it won't last and unlike Mark and I, you'll get any flavor of ice cream that you like....or Jello too! And you can have all of it you want! Right Mom??? And I'm going to be one up on you this summer because this month I get to have two surgeries!!! One time they're going to do some work on my teeth in the operating room and the next one, they're going to go kinda' deep inside me and fix my heart. I have two sons just two years older than you and they have both had operations too. Michael really liked his because he LOVES Jello AND ice cream and after the first day, his Mom and I thought he would never quit eating it!

Good Luck......I'll let you know how my surgeries go if you promise to come back here with your Mom's help and tell me all about yours. Okay?

Spaw

When I was a boy (say 40 years ago) there was a song played on kids'radio programmes called Peter Ponsil(I think) and his Tonsil. It described the operation and the aftermath in comforting terms: "But icecream tasted wonderful, how good it made me feel/And so I had a great big dish of ice-cream every meal" And finished with the reassuring notion; "Now almost every other child will be just like PP/For that is all that happens when they take away your tonsil"

Says here it was recorded by Gwen Davies, PY 030070 (anybody know what label "PY" is?), and the flip side was, hold onto your hat, "Peter Ponsil and his Tonsil, Part 2". But there's no info about date, composer, lyrics, etc. Anybody got any more info on this one?

omigawd---I think I am older than both of you, and I don't remember Peter and his Ponsil.........this is bad, friends, really bad. I don't think I ever heard it. Aside--"ponsil" sounds almost obscene.....

Nathan, the Spaw is absolutely correct with his take on my deaf-ness. My kids and their friends have tried that for years, and I really do Kick Their Butts just on General Principles!!!! If they make me say "What?" or "Huh"? I just whack 'em upside the head........

Then one of them mutters without lip movement.."See, I told you Mom couldn't hear us......." so I get to whack them again!!

I really am almost totally deaf.......have 0 in my right ear, and only about 50% of normal in my left ear......but I get by with a "little help from my friends".

I thought the trip to the hospital was very exciting, new foods, new toys, lots of attention. For some reason I had a sore throat the next morning but it's was years before I put it all together. Can't think of a song, although there are a few "Willie" verses echoing somewhere...

I gotta find me some poncil, definitely.

Actually, the hospital is great for kids, and it's the same surgeon who tubed their ears when they were 2, and he's been seeing them for followup etc. They apparently don't take tonsils out anymore for just sore throats, but for sleep apnea, absolutely. He needs O2 all the time, not just when he's awake, and he needs to sleep, he has headaches all the time which I think are sleep deprivation, since he gets BAD headaches if he's really sleep deprived. Timothy's tonsils are fine, so no question of needing them both done (right now, at least). AND apparently they recommend against ice cream, can you believe it! I'm probably going to ignore that one, unless our local doc me out of it?

I personally am reminded of the original Madeline - "and all the other girls cried Boo hoo hoo! We want to have our (tonsils) out too!"

Oh, and I forgot to mention that *Timmie and I* were going to do the singing, I am assuming that Willie will, indeed, be too sore.

And I never, ever tell them it won't hurt if it will. I had shots all the time growing up in Africa, and always appreciated the ones who were honest; I could brace myself for pain I knew I was getting, but really resented being lied to and then having the pain anyway, when I wasn't braced.

I haven't had my tonsils out, but I had my wisdom teeth done recently. For the top two they decided just to give me general anesthesia, before finding out that I was resistant to both novacaine and nitris oxide. I almost OD'd on the freakin stuff (gave me as much as they could for my body weight, and a little more), and I could still feel the pain. I told him to take out the other two, because I didn't want to have to have surgery TWICE. He said no. Guess he was sick of watching tears come to my eyes and my body bucking every time he started working on something.
As for post opperation food, I'd suggest jello pudding and hi-C orange drink. Those go down great on sore throats. I can't think of any songs, but I'll get back to you.

Philibuster, who is now re-living all of his surgeries.

It's getting closer and I'm getting more and more nervous. William, of course, is fine.

And Charley Noble my old PCV pal - are any of those "Willie" verses you mention NOT about death, dying, or murder?

It was Willie that got drownded in the deep blue sea
Sweet William is dead, pretty Peggy-O
Willie Moore(dies of a broken heart following his lady-love's suicide)
In Willie's pocket he had a penknife to give Johnny a deadly wound...
...and so on... I really need something more uplifting!

The songs I often sing non-stop to six-year-olds:
The Marvelous Toy
Waltzing with Bears
Rock Island Line
(All God's Critters got) A Place in the Choir
Jenny Jenkins (I don't sing the version in the DT)
The Cat Came Back
(Boom Boom) Ain't it Great to be Crazy?

Not soothing songs at all, but they may be good for cheering up!

Nothing to do with songs but when my daughter had hers out at the age of 14 or so, I asked her what she wanted. A really big stuffed toy was her reply. She was actually really happy with the Futon which I bought her. JohnB

Hmm, blicky to Marvelous toy didn't work, is that the It went (whirr) when it stood still? that's a GREAT song, thanks for reminding me of it!

And I do hear that it's better early than late, no idea if 6 is early by anybody's standards, but he went for his preop blood work today, and asked if it would hurt (I said some, but not lots), asked the phlebotomist the same question and got the identical answer, kind of inhaled when the needle went in, and didn't even cry. He just looked at the tubes and said Are you going to take ALL my blood? And that was that. The phleb gave him 5 stickers she was so impressed. Meanwhile, I'm having dreams about not remembering the doctor's phone number, can you say let's stress out about something else and avoid this one entirely?

Actually, what I remember most clearly about the procedure is that my parents left me in the hospital overnight and never told me they were going to. Nothing malicious--it just never occurred to anyone to share this with me. I couldn't believe it.

Did I miss something, or has no one yet mentioned Bill Cosby's classic routine (from his earlier comedy-LP days) about tonsil removal? That includes a song of sorts: "ICE cream... I'm gonna get ICE cream..."

For general kid-cheering-up, there's the Lou and Peter Berryman song, "It's Better Than That" (about how much better adults have it than kids do!), also recorded by Trout Fishing in America. And then there's just about everything else Trout Fishing in America has recorded for kids!

So your having your tonsils out and that really sucks
But it doesn't suck as much as septicemia!
Or even as much as the sucky old days
When they'd take out yer tonsils with rusty razor blades!

And though you and your tonsils, have been real great pals
Even old friends have to part!
So, be happy that you live in these happy old days!
When taking out yer tonsils can be fun!

Now getting just the right tune takes some creativity, but I hope this helps... I generally find a rambling sort of George Burns approach fits the words, first penned by Bobbie Burns, (the plumber from Bayside, not the Scottish Poet...)
Good luck to the wee cruther
Larry

Mrrzy - Trout Fishing In America is a great band - I've seen them more times that I can count. They perform for both adults and children and often do seperate concerts for each. The guitarist is about 6 foot 7" and the stand up bass player is about 5 foot 6". Check them out at www.troutmusic.com. Their website has a childrens section too. We bought some of their kids CD's before we were even expecting. Highly recommended by the Mrs and I.

Wes, thanks, I will.

Post-Op Report
Took him a while to get over the anesthesia, like about 3 hours longer than they thought, but we're home. He's in a lot of pain and trying to refuse to drink, while the doctor had finally been able to bully him into drinking or we wouldn't have been allowed out. And his temp is going up, which is they say normal but I don't have to like it. So he's lying there looking miserable and every 5 mn I make him cry, but he really can't do more than a swallow at a time and can't have anything like ice cream yet. (He's on a half-hour break right now, then I'll spend another half-hour making him drink.) He had a dose of Tylenol 2 hours ago so I can't try the codeine yet either, and then, his temp was normal. (They claim they outgrow the paradoxical reaction – and all I can say is, they better be right, since I warned them about the reaction and asked when they prescribed it anyway. They gave him Demerol in the hospital, think that had anything to do with him not waking up?)

AND his other parent was there in the afternoon, and the 2 of us were fine, each taking one hour-long errand break, it was refreshing and nice to (apparently) enjoy each other's company again, for about 5 hours total if not uninterruptedly.

Timothy spent the afternoon in camp, and was wonderful once he got to the hospital. Will's roomie had gone by then so Tim had an electric bed to play with, and only tried to play physically with Willie a little at which point both of us came down on him like a ton of bricks and he's been a perfect gentleman ever since. And don't worry, I've at least one person lined up on each day, in case Tim needs his ass run around a playground for a couple of hours. And all the neighbors have instructions to find excuses to drop by so Tim and I both can have someone else to talk to over the weekend. He'll go back to camp Mon & Tues, then Tues night they go to my X2B's, whom I hope manages to enforce the down time. Oh, and the Tooth Fairy will be dropping by tonight as the anesthesiologist had to take out the very loose tooth that wasn't quite ready to come out on its own.

That's the gist, but I'm going to ramble on.

Willie was marvelous – played nicely with his electric bed till time to go in to surgery, got a little burst of nervous energy in the preop waiting room, which I handled with absolute inspiration, I must admit. I asked him if his (stuffed) dog was nervous, and he said yes, when I know he would have denied being scared himself. I asked if the dog was worried about going to sleep, waking up, or the in between, and he said the in between. I said well, Willie will sleep right through that part and not feel a thing, and he calmed right down and played nicely. He held the mask over his own face till his hand kinda loosened (they asked me if I wanted to hold it! Absolutely not! What were they thinking?!?) , and then after he was asleep, struggled as if being smothered for a few seconds, which I'd forgotten, but both boys did that when they had their ears tubed at 2½. It's apparently normal.
Surgery took about 40 mn, and about 20 mn later I went into recovery, where he was still quite out of it and bleeding at the nose. Which I should have expected but since I hadn't, it was a bit shocking. I sat by him just as he decided to stick his finger down his throat to explore, and I got so grossed out my toes curled and I had to put my head down to not look, while I kinda tried not to holler No don't do that! and the nurse came running over to make sure I wasn't going to faint. Nice man. Willie was a basket case. The 8-year old in the next bed took his in stride… Oh, and when they gave Willie Tylenol with Demerol in it I wanted to ask if I could taste it, every time I've been sick enough for Demerol it's been contraindicated for whatever it is that I had…

So, anyway, I'm OK but boy is it hard to have to make him suffer so, and I can hardly wait till 11 when I can give him a half-dose of the codeine and hope it conks him out… if it doesn't, I'll be up real late and will post again, probably!

Mrrzy ... can relate! My daughter had both her legs operated on so that she could walk again ... she had 'Barbie Doll' feet. It was so upsetting when she woke up from the operation. Took a year to recover and she's fine now, but it truly was a horrific experience. I had my tonsils out when I was 16, and my friend had his out at 35! I think 6 is a good age, leastwise he'll forget about whole ordeal sooner than later! Best wishes for a good recovery.

My husband has only one tonsil...the other was KNOCKED OUT by his sister when he was three. She was ten and practicing her violin lesson, and he was teasing her by standing on a chair "conducting" with a stick in his mouth. She got mad and threw a pillow at him, and it hit the stick and knocked it down his throat. She was so horrified that she apparently blocked it completely, and to this day does not remember it.

So tell Willie things could be worse...after he's feeling better.

I co-wrote a denist's Shanty to the tune of Shenandoah - is that close enough?
My earliest memory of hospital was having my tonsils out, must have been very young - the only memory is of a vague hospital situation and the anaesthetic mask.
can't have enjoyed it since I must have resolved to be so disgustingly healthy to not need hospitalization since.

Hi, I've missed the 'cat these last few days, I assume it was the virus. Anyway, Willie is still feverish and fairly miserable but he turns down Tylenol if he can swallow at all, which usually he can. His choice is OK with me as then I can monitor his temp, and he doesn't feel well enough to play. One of the hard things is getting him not to play when he feels up to it, of course, but if he does, his temp goes up faster and higher than if he stays quiet... and I kept Tim home yesterday, more out of not wanting to get Will up even to drive somewhere and back, but today off he went, and I hope he comes back tired!

Glad everything went well. I expect that very soon you'll be seeing a big improvement in his sleeping and daytime behavior.

Aloha,
Mark

If the guy is really 61 who's having this operation I sure don't envy him. I've heard it's really hard on mature folks who have it done. Actually, when I was 15 and having one of several knee operations, there was a 250 pound guy (six foot seven), a salvage diver on Lake Michigan, in the other bed in the hospital room. He was having his tonsils out and cried like a baby all night afterwards. I guess I learned then that life can be painful even after you reach twenty-one. All I recall from having 'em out myself was being nauseated by my mother's perfune after I came out from under the anesthesia----that and burning pain that even ice cream didn't help.

As far as songs go, I once heard one a long time ago called "You're A Big Pain In The Neck". I'd think that just might be the tune you are searching for.

Art Thieme

I was about 5 years old and was quite thrilled to be in a hospital. I had my favorite stuffed animal with me, my flounder, and the kid next to me in bed lent me his toy pistol to play with. It was really a neat experience. I wonder what ever became of "Finny"?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
