I'm 6' 3" and fat, I have a "gravy-dipper" moustache (which goes into "points" at re-enactment musters). On one camp site, I woke-up a little late, I was half out of a flea-bag, when one of my mates said "you look like a bloody walrus" and threw a sardine at me (I know, eating sardines at breakfast - barbaric!). So, Walrus, it's not a name, it's a description.

I also had a cat I named Static because its hair always stood on end and I'm interested in Chaos theory. The combination of these led me to unveil the mystery of life.

Oh, and my real name is Brock which is equally cool for an American.

Mine's quite simple. My name's Ruth-Marie Arkley, and I've been known as Ruthie for ever. I'm also known as the Almighty Sid from Beyond the Farthest Bilberry, but that's a bit long for general usage.

My ma was overly immersed in her New England timestream, and dragged a batch of handles out of the old Testament for me and my sibs in the best Plymouth tradition. It served me in good stead and I saw no reason to cover it with another. One reason I enjoy it is that I am hardly ever confused with someone else because of our names, except that guy who makes chocolate chip cookies,. When I was smaller, of course, I had to put up with jokers who had misplaced Andy Warhol, but then he died, and with people looking for sapphires and strange king-fisher birds, but I could usually provide them with an appropriate destination.

Playing 3/2 hornpipes and Cotswold morris in "Irish" sessions in Cambridge marks a man out as being not-terribly celtic. Ironic really, because very few actual Irish people attend that session anyway - most of us are English!

Anyway, it differentiates me from Guinness John. (Noted Cambridge boozing man)

I originally used Chantywrassler as a Mudcat nick, (which is Glasgow slang for a BSer, or someone who may be fo dubious integtrity - deriving from the term "chanty" - which means a chamber pot ) but I only visited infrequently, and when I started coming around more often, I discovered Chantyranger was posting . I thought that my use of the name could be open to misinterpretation..

SO...

I chose another, based on the Scottish expression "I'm that hungry I could eat a scabby dug (dog)"

So I became Scabby Doug..

Jim is what my parents called me; James is what by birth cirtificate says. Krause comes from some German speaking fella that had curly hair. Krause in German=Curly in English. In Low Saxon it is Krüse, in Dutch it is Kroese. And oddly enough, my hair is rather curly. So the name fits.

When I started out, I called myself Soddy, after the earth houses which were made of sod that the early settlers of the prairies in the US built. Then I realized that the word Sod means something entirely different to speakers of British English. Taking a tip from a couple of other 'catters, I decided to use my real name. Nicnames never seemed to stick to me anyways.

I don't know when Jack, (who is an old friend) changed his name. The story is really about when I changed MY name. AND IT WAS FOR THE SAME REASON THAT JACK CHANGED HIS. JUST ASK HIM. Let's see, 1946, I was 17 years old. I DISTINCTLY remember Jack getting raked over the coals at a meeting of club "Folksay" when he said he was thinking of changing his name, and why. THAT'S when I decided to change my name. It wasn't Gibson, it was Joey Gordon (?) and later on Gibson. Much later on. AND WHAT THE HELLS THE DIFFERENCE ANYWAY/ IT WAS 55 YEARS AGO. THAT'S PROBABLY A LONGER TIME THAN YOU HAVE BEEN IN EXISTANCE.

It was originally intended by my eldest brother that he should have a little baby sister as he already had a little baby brother.

Thunderbirds ( the puppet series ) had just come out in England and seeing as how our family name is the same as Lady Penelope Creighton WARD's , he thought that should be my name.

The whole thing, he meant.

They had to whittle him down to just Penelope, but he usually calls me 'madam' when he's annoyed.

I just thank the powers that be that I wasn't a boy as I was going to be called Parker ( the butler ) otherwise.

So when I saw that there was already a Penny on the 'cat', I thought I may as well get some mileage out of my name.

Technically I'm named after my dad, Michael (Michelle) However I wish they had actually called me Michael as you have no idea how many girls from north London were christened Michelle that year! Also you have no idea how girls from north London can mangle the name. Sheesh!

I helped start an open-mic night at my UU congregation 7 years ago that eventually became known as the Blackcat Cafe - Our first one that we held was on a Friday the 13th, hence the conenction with Blackcat.

No, I don't tend any cats, even black ones, but I am attached to several friends' cats. I also love Hallowe'en & Samhain so there's a bit of a connection there.

I'm also known as Top Cat because one of my friends has called me TC (my ititials - Tom Cook) and someone eventually made the old connection to Top Cat. pax yall

I'm sure I've said this before, but here we go again!! :-)

My real name's Kathryn, which can be shortened to Kat. I used to be in a band called Fireboots. I took the Fire from the band's name, changed the spelling of my name so it ended up as my favourite animal, put the two together and ended up with Firecat.
I also use the name Bodhranfire, but not on the 'cat. This comes from the band, and the fact that I play bodhran.

I'm a National Parks ranger and I sing chanteys. I recently found out that the ships fiddler was called the "monkey's orphan." Since I also play fiddle, I might have chosen that as my Mudcat name if I had known of that term then - but I've become accustomed to the "chanteyranger" name, and I rather like it, so it stays, at least for the time being.

My name is Roland, but only relatives use that name nowadays... to the rest of the world I am ROLLO.

The reason being my faible for vikings, the team captain of my BLOODBOWL team of norse called Rollo the Red, (a very funny game, bloodbowl: a mixture of tabletop, chess and american football with fantasy monster miniatures!) my rowdy beard having red strains, and all in all it is quite descriptive...

for I am fat as a pig... and they say: Rollo, roll over! Har, har, har...

If anyone cares: Roland, comes from Ruotland, which means "Rules the Land" or King. Of course my parents chose this name after the great paladin of Charlemagne. When they told it my grandparents they said: "But you cannot give your son a dog´s name!" The big great mean ole watch dog from the farm next door was named Roland, too...
