I don't know this song, but I live near stalybridge. You may be interested to know that it is one of the few (the only?) station which has a proper pub facing onto the platform (you know, not one of these modern plastic affairs). The have a folk club there every saturday night.

I used to live in Stalybridge and catch a train every weekday from the station but never went to the folk club! Not much help that was it!

The folk club in the Buffet Bar on Stalybridge Station is also the smokiest place I've ever been in. (Cigarette smoke, not steam engines!) Apart from that it's a lovely venue.
