Subject: The wind that shakes the barley
From: GUEST,~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Date: 02 Jun 01 - 04:40 PM

Good evening people I have the text to the above song and remember vaguely the tune in my head from the singing of Martin Carthy on an old LP. Can someone give me the guitar chords?

Thanks in advance John

The MIDI Pene has given is to the reel. I could be wrong but I think that this one at the Mudcat MIDIs will be the tune John is looking for.

Wow, brainlock on my part. Thanks for the correction, Jon. I updated the links in the message from alison when she added it.

I don't know about brainlock, Jeff, I just get hopelessly confused at times...

The Wind That Shakes The Barley, I play is the reel - I don't konw if there are any words to it, I Play the hornpipe, The Rights Of Man which is not the "Rights Of Man" with words in a recent thread, I play The Sally Gardens which is not "Down by the Sally Gardens...", then there is the jig, the Lark In The Morning which is not "The lark in the morning she rises off her nest..."...

There is also a ballad by the same name that has been covered by Cathal McConnell of the Boys of the Lough as well as Karen Casey. I wonder if that is the tune John is looking for?

The song was written by Robert Dwyer Joyce (1830-83) from Co Limerick. The lyrics, music and guitar chords are given in "The gold sun of Irish freedom: 1798 in song and story" by Danny Doyle and Terence Folan, Mercier, Dublin [Irish American Book Co. Boulder], 1998. The song was also recorded in 1998 by Ron Kavana[as "Alias"]on the double CD "Irish Songs of Rebellion, Resistance & Reconciliation", (this album is a must for anyone interested in this area as it breathes new life into a lot of quite tired old songs).

Joyce set his verses to Royal Charlie, a tune that had been popular in both Ireland and Scotland since the mid 18th century.

I believe that the air used with Yeats' "Down By The Salley Gardens" is "Maids of Mourne's Shore".

...and Seamus Ennis reckoned that The Lark in the Morning should properly be called The Lark's March.

Recordings of a piece by this name are available here:

Old Time Songs For Kids (Jeff Warner & Jeff Davis);

Turning Toward the Morning (Bok, Muir & Trickett). Purchasing through these links supports the Mudcat.

I've seen lots of threads on this song over the past seven years, but was never certain that we'd captured the correct tune for the song (as opposed to the dance tune).

Her's the version in Patrick Gaven's Irish Songs of Resistance.

John McCutcheon played the reel "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" on hammer dulcimer on his 1977 album by the same name. He credited his version to the Smathers Family.

I would note that the tune I submitted is in 3/4 and provides a very good fit with the lyrics. When I get the chance I'll incorporate the w: lyrics into the abc version above and (perhaps) add the SongWright notation as well - courtesy of Pavane's 'Harmony 3.2.6' program.

I seem to remember Tom Gilfellon, (I think it was) plays the REEL on
?Cittern on his LP (The Middle of the Tune?). I attempt it on melodeon, but it doesn't really suit.
