I was born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. My father was Kendall Kidder, born in Mogollon, New Mexico, in 1919, from a line started by James Ensign Kidder in 1633 or 1634 in what became Cambridge, Mass. My son is named Kendall Kidder - somewhere way back there our folks knew each other.

All these connections remind me of what Kurt Vonnegut called "granfallons" - meaningless associations used by strangers to make meaningless bonds. Vonnegut wrote about two people meeting each other on an airplane, discovering that they were both from Indiana "What?? Your're a Hoosier too?", and using this as a pretext to fall into conversation.

My kids were all born in living rooms. Joshua in his grandmother's house in Larimer county Colorado. Jessica in the trailer a hundred yards down river. And Benjamin, in our stone house in Fairlee, Vermont. At least two of them will have places to visit to say "I was born there."

I'll get this right now. West - By God - Virginia, under a Questioning Star. Spent early days near a bunch of coal camps listening to coal miners talk union and politics and pickin' and grinnin' and singin' and such. Weathered the We'll Save the Hillbillies from Themselves government programs of the 60's and 70's. Moved to the more civilized city of Charleston WV. For the better schools. Later got my college degree in Athens, OH. Lived a bit in FL., NY., and now in PA. State of my fathers' birth.

She was a terrific singer - operatic rather than folk - and, last I heard, was principal soprano in the Leipzig State Opera. Her dad was a local judge, name of Rodenberg, and a lovely guy.

Physically, I was born in Owosso, Shiawassee County, Michigan. My parents moved to Lansing when I was 16 months old. There I stayed until I left to join the Navy. A short time later, I found the birthplace of my soul. I could not shake the feeling that I had been there before. It was all so familiar and comfortable. That was Scotland. Though I'm proud to be an American, I can't help but feel the tug to go back to the land of my ancestors. If I had half a chance, that's where I'd be right now.

born in Greenville NC (hello to Matt R), though I grew up in durham nc, and now live in Falls Church VA (also known as the greater DC area) but go to school in new york state. and while one grandmother was born and riased in a tiny waustrian village, my mother's family are all scoth-irich-enlgish from east tennessee, and my father's family alsi fought with william the conqueror and had a pair of brothers come over in the 1600s -- mebbe my ancestors and kendalls were neighbors.

in the south, there's the distinction between where you're /from/ (where you were born or where your 'people' -- family-- are) and where you live (your address).

I was born in Provincetown, Mass. This was not something I admitted readily while growing up because my classmates only knew the town as "that place with all the crazy gay people." It was a different place when my mom lived there during the sixties, full of artists. We were year-rounders.

I think Americans are fascinated with where our families came from and when, because we're a nation of newcomers.

That said, on one side of my family I am descended from Gov William Bradford, with ancestors from Wales, England and Scotland. One set of great-grandparents on the other side came over from Sweden, another set came from France, and into the mix was tossed my Abnaki great-grandfather.

I was born as a very young child in a town with a population of 150 people. This figure had remained the same for the last 70 years, cos every time a baby was born somebody left town. Seriously though; Rotten Row Maternity Hospital Glasgow, and it was called that long before I was born there!

I remember Portwey Hospital - my father was there when he broke his leg. I was about 3 at the time, but remember sitting with him in the garden because I was considered too young to go in the hospital....

As for me, I was born at 10 Cocklands, Charminster, Dorchester. It has lime green drainpipes now. Mother was so annoyed, I was born at lunch time, when my grandfather was busy and couldn't come and transport my mother to Abbotsbury. I was the first one in the family since 1814 to have been born out of the village. Father and sister were making a cake downstairs, so every so often this voice would call up 'how much sugar dear?' as my mother lay in labour...... Just in time for lunch I appeared and apparently the cake wasn't too bad either.

I work with a woman who was born in the US. Her parents are both Indians born in India. She has been *very obviously* effected by this. Her taste in food, the men she will date, the music she listens to all has a flavour of her heritage.

I am Irish and Scots-Irish by decent. My parents, though not from Ireland or Scotland themselves, still carried some of the cultures of their heritage with them as handed down to them through their parents, and so on and so on.

Keep in mind too that the USA is in its infancy still (culturally speaking) as compared to many other countries. We have but a few short centuries of history, and most of our *unique* "culture" is based on pretty flimsy stuff, with the exception of things like the works of Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, etc. I am personally not willing to allow hotdogs, Hollywood, baseball, and McDonalds be the banners under which I allow myself to be represented. We are *all* from someplace else here, unless you're a native american.

Why would someones embracing of the cultures that helped create who they are threaten you so?

I love my roots, and am proud of them. I am still not willing to eat haggis though ;D

Brooklyn, NY. I grew up in Hicksville, Long Island, NY. (really, the town is called Hicksville). My father grew up in Brooklyn, but was born in Merida, Mexico. His family came here in 1922, when he was six. As far as I know, they quit speaking Spanish. For some reason, people with Spanish names are expected to speak Spanish forever. Eighty years is a long time to hang on to a culture, especially when you don't live in that country. My mother is from Colorado, Oak Creek near Steamboat Springs. Her family also lived in Lamar and Denver. My parents met during WWII when my dad was stationed in Denver. They lived in McAllen, TX before coming back to New York. My mom's father was from Arkansas and later moved to Oklahoma. Her mother was from Missouri before moving to Colorado. She was a school teacher in Pocatello, Idaho and he was a cowboy when they met. They later turned to sheep ranching when they moved back to CO. Before Missouri, my grandmothers family had lived in Kentucky. An early ancester was given land there as payment for defending the fort at Wheeling during the French and Indian War. My ancestors' nationalities are Mexican, Scottish, Dutch, Mayan and Cherokee. I'm one of the few people I know in this country that gives his nationality as American. With family in this country for over 200 years, I don't see why not.

Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland. A town previously known only for being the brithplace of Simpson (medical discoverer) and afterwards for being in the a Proclaimers song for all the wrong reasons.

Actually that's more interesting - anyone's birthplace made famous by sone. I was christened in the Parish church in Dunkeld which I believe was the setting for a song about a still.

I was born in Harare, Zimbawe, but to scottish parents. I have traced my family tree through my mother and found that my roots are on the Orkney Island of Shapinsay. My Great Gran was a "Swanney" and member of the Gunn clan

The Swanney name to originates from the Vikings. The clan Gunn lists the surnames Swan, Swann, Swanney, and Swanson as families associated to the clan. The origin of these names came from one man named Sweyn Asliefson. He was the son of Olaf of Gairsay, who was the son of Rolf, a Viking. Sweyn (referred to as "The Ultimate Viking" or "The Pirate of Freswick") lived during the 1100's in the Orkney Islands and around the north-eastern tip of Scotland (Caithness). He died in 1171 while he was on a "viking" in Ireland. Sweyn married Ragnhild and had two sons, Olaf and Andres. Andres married Frida and had a son named Gunni, who is considered to be the progenitor of the clan Gunn.

All my family are Londoners (a mixed tribe of North and Sarf Lunduners) But folks moved out to the New Towns Development in Crawley, Sussex, where I was born.

Further back, great-grandparents were Italian, German, French Hugenot, Welsh and more French - no Irish though, even someone once told me that we all have a drop of Irish blood in us? Someone did ask me once "What blood?" I had in me - well, O Rhesus negative actually..

Oh, there's another thread - did anyone see this (diet?) thing about blood groups - i.e. one type meant your ancestors were, um, say, Neolithic Beaker people and you shouldn't eat wheat or some such?

Hey, kendall, 'bout that "great state" thing... *grins* Texans are quite certain that their state -is- better than everyone else's. And I guess it -is- a form of nationalism, but not to a degree that it's dangerous, I don't think. There's nothing wrong with thinking your state is the best; if you didn't, you'd move.

And to speak to your remark on "pride" in heritage--I'm not proud of it in the same way in which I'm proud of getting second place in the knot-tying competition. It's not the same as pride in an accomplishment. Unfortunately, at the moment, I'm not able to wrap my mind around exactly what I -do- mean...I'll get back here when I figure it out.

I was born in Los Angeles and moved to Seattle when I was nine.

My great-grandfather on my father's side came from the Orkney Islands (I think he was born there, but I'm not sure — my sister, the genealogy buff, is working on it), went to work for the Hudson's Bay Company, and came to the San Juan Islands (disputed territory then, but Washington State now) in 1858, where he settled. My grandfather and father were born on San Juan Island. My mother's parents came from Dalarna, Sweden, and my mother (tenth of ten children) was born in Norway, Kansas (about five miles south of Scandia, Kansas).

Considering that the Vikings were using the Orkneys and Scotland as a base as early as the ninth century (and perhaps before), I probably have a lot of Scandahoovian in my genes, along with smidgen of Celt. My dad moved to Southern California for a few years, and my sisters and I were all born in Los Angeles. After bit, my father noticed that under the California sun, all the moss was falling off his north side and he decided that he needed to move back to the Pacific Northwest. We came back to Seattle when I was nine, and except for a few side-trips, I've lived here ever since. Does the fact that I was born in Los Angeles rather than here make me an artificial Seattlite?

Speaking of space travel, I presume from what you wrote, Crazy Eddie, that you are a Motie. If my presumption is correct, do you play an instrument, and if so, what? Having three arms, you ought to be pretty wild on a guitar or banjo. But with only three fingers on the gripping hand, I imagine you use a lot of open tunings. . . .

I have no memory of this myself, so my knowledge of where I was born is based entirely on hearsay. However, finding my parents to be reliable witnesses to the event, I was born in a hospital in Pittston, PA, a little town between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. We moved to Scranton shortly thereafter and that is where I spent my formative years. After receiving my undergraduate degreee, I moved to the area around Harrisburg, PA. Later I accepted a promotion and moved to Pittsburgh, where I now reside. Although we've travelled a bit, I was born and still live in Pennsylvania. Seems kinda boring doesn't it?

Stanford Hospital, Stanford, California. My mother was a fifth-generation San Franciscan, but apparently I was six weeks premature, and surprised them all quite soundly, so they didn't want to risk the longish drive to make me a 6th-gen. *grin*. But Stanford Hospital is a great place, especially if one is going to be born weighing three pounds nine ounces and threatening to check out early every five minutes. I'm alive today. 'Nuff said. ;)

I was born in Riverdale, MI, USA, a town of about 100 inhabitants at the time. My parents moved from there when I was an infant, so, aside from still having relatives in that area, I hold no great pride of place. I've lived in Michigan all my life, though, and probably will continue to do so. I currently live in Lansing, about 1-1/2 miles from the great god Elderly, which receives my regular tithes.

I was born in Washington, D.C., as were both of my sons. My parents were from Oregon (though my Dad was born in Vancouver, B.C.--his parents had moved there from Iowa or Illinois or some other midwestern state).

I've never really gotten into genealogy, but I'm grateful to my cousin Rob, who has documented my mother's family very thoroughly. It's interesting reading, but I don't think I would want to do the research myself. Rather spend the time singing...

I was born half way between two small cities that most everyone in the U.S. has heard of, even though they are so small: Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, Michigan. I've been living in Seattle since 1976. Most of my ancestors came from The Netherlands, with a couple of them from Wales and England. I suppose that is important because the attitudes of the people I grew up around in some ways determined who I am, and were in some ways determined by where they were from.

Apparently, if someone mentioned his birthplace he would remark that "If a man is born in a stable, it doesn't necessarily make him a horse"
Personally, I think it is mainly a state of mind. I know two sisters, of 100% Irish parentage, born & reared in Scotland. One considers herself Irish, one Scottish.
Who am I to argue? They can be Hiberno-Caledonian too as far as I'm concerned.
Mind you I think some of you earthlings are too hung up on this kind of thing. We have other things to worry about on Mote Prime.

Through no fault of my own, I was born in New Plymouth, North Island, NZ. Most forebears came here from southern England in the 1840s, with later blood from Norway and Scotland. Since then, I've lived in most parts of New Zealand, but through every fault of my own (poverty induced by "Nick Atteen" and "Al K Whole"), I have never moved beyond these shores - apart from via books and the Internet.

I always ask punters on bus tours where they are from. It's great fun trying to relate their "place of origin" to Stewart Island - and not too difficult for most folk from the "western world" - we had a pretty cosmopolitan community here in the 1870s

Most folk give their current location, rather than place of birth, which can be a grin when a strong "accent" comes from an entirely different part of the world...;)

Anway.... It's a ball trying to relate to people's backgound. Teaches you a lot about this crazy world we live in....;)

I am less certain as to why some Americans do it, but because Canada is a country of two founding people, French and English, with two official languages and the French wish to keep their culture officially distinct, then by language, if one speaks English, one automatically is lumped into what is called English Canadian.

As the rest of Canadians are in fact, not all WASPs, and Canada seems to retain less of a "melting pot" ethic than the US, there is a concerted effort here, to define ones heritage, if it is, in effect, not English. Even the Canadian Census now asks one to list ones ethnic background, even if your ancestors arrived here two or three hundred years ago.

Also, until fairly recently in this country, if one was not of the background of the two founding nations, in most instances, one was considered a second class citizen (a lengthy discourse regarding the Family Compact would be needed for further clarification). There has been a resurgence of pride in ones ethnic heritage, as people of backgrounds other than French and English have gained positions of prominence and power.

I think this pride heritage is based upon the knowledge of what our ancestors endured to settle and become citizens of this land and a means of honouring their courage and the hardships endured.

A concept that might be difficult to understand, if one is born in a country of relatively homogeneous ethnicity, whose language and traditions date back a thousand years or more, but not in a country that is relatively young such as Canada.

And all this without even touching on the resurgence of pride within people of First Nations heritage.

My ancestors were waiting for Kendall's ancestors in 1066 and got their Saxon asses whipped. There's a story that's been passed down for many many generations of Fieldings. I'll try to recall it.

"It was a cold damp morning when Turrvig Fieldingson noticed the little ship docking near his back yard. Fearsome creatures emerged from the ship dressed in chain mail and carrying bags of French fries. They were noble indeed and he heard their leader (who was called "William the self-abuser" at that time) exclaim "By Gar, I tink I conquer did here island"! Standing next to William was his personal balladeer, story teller and chief Fool, (a respected profession in those days) a French peasant named Kendalle de Rubberboot. The Fieldingsons stood their ground with their Pikes at the ready (their pickerels were in the shop) awaiting the fearsome charge. Instead, the balladeer hoisted his Taylor-made lute and started singing songs about Maine. My ancestors threw down their weapons and surrendered the country to William, convinced that any race of people who knew folk songs about a State that wouldn't be invented for 700 years were clearly superior beings.

I, on the other hand was born in Toronto, grew up in Montreal, lived in half a dozen countries, and moved back to Toronto because of the plumbing, transit system and many music stores.

My ancestors came from Normandy with William the conqueror in 1066. In 1635, two brothers came to America and I'm an 11th generation Yankee. As far as being proud of any of that, I dont understand that attitude. How can I be proud of anything that I didnt accomplish myself? How can anyone be proud of an accident of birth? Politicians are always saying "The great state of....." are they implying that other states are not great? That theirs is somehow superior? What makes, say, Texas great? explain it to me, I really want to know. Sounds like a form of nationalism to me.

My mother is from Norfolk, East Anglia, and I date my family in the states back to the middle 1600's in New Jersey. Lessee...I was born in Austin, capitol of the great state of Texas. After that, I spent several years at Exit 9, North Brunswick, New Jersey. After NJ was a brief stint in Arlington, Virginia, then Cape Carteret North Carolina (at the beach), and now my family's in Greenville, NC. (A little further inland.) I spend most of the year in the lovely mountain city of Asheville, NC.
I have no problem admitting where I was born or where I've been. However, I'm also proud of my family that came from other places and enjoy celebrating my heritage.

I was born in Texas. I am the only person in my family to be born and raised here. I don't have any Texan heritage. I'm still proud of my state, and the history behind it, but I don't have ANY ancestral roots here. My paternal grandfather came over from germany shortly before the civil war. No one is shure about my mothers side of the family (when they came here, or even WHY), but their Dutch and Irish.
I care about those roots, simply because I don't have any American ones.

Under your definition, calach, I am "from" Cleveland. My father was in graduate school there, in temporary housing. I lived there for 1 year. My dad had a condition for which he sought the "geographical cure" also known as the "grass is greener" effect. We moved a LOT. I am now living in the one state that has ever felt like home, even though I first lived here after I turned 16. So I say I am "from" New Hampshire. But this rootlessness has led me to yearn for my deeper roots, my ancestral roots, which are Ireland (co. Westmeath), England (Framlingham, Suffolk), and Scotland(place unknown). Never been to Westmeath or Framlingham, though I might someday. They probably won't feel like home, either. But it's nice to know where the old folks came from.
Lots of North Americans suffer from this rootlessness. Don't fault us for looking to the past for the place where the deep waters nourish the roots.

My parents were both born in Massachusetts, U.S.A. My paternal grandfather was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. My paternal grandmother was born in Bermuda. My maternal grand parents were born in Massachusetts, but their parents were born in France, Germany, and Ireland. It's pretty difficult to have any sense of roots or 'heritage' with a mix like that.

I can't understand all this false federalism.
Why can't people just ADMIT where they were BORN???? There are so many peopole who say they're ..... rish/american/african/..... scots irish..... whatever.... Why don't people just ADMIT where they were born........ I'm Scottish, born in Edinburgh; why can't people be proud of their heritage, instead of trying to make one up????????
