Mike Russo was the leader and guru of everyone interested in blues or folk music in Portland in the late 50's. He was a little like Simenon's "Little Angel," he lived for music and had no visible ego or interest in fame or fortune.

Mike cut a vinyl disk/album with Arhoolie in 1969, which I later acquired (and warmly recommend to any piano blues fancier, if it's still in print). The jacket notes gave me an update indicating Mike had graduated from guitar to piano, served in the Army, got divorced, and done "hundreds" of concerts. And returned to Portland, Ore., where he was gainfully employed painting signs.

Anyone heard anything about this guy.

I did some net searching when I first saw this, there are references to records, posters and festivals from the 60's/ early 70's, but nothing after that. I sent some emails to the the most likely looking places asking for any recent information.

Toadfrog ... As I remember, Mike sorta looked like an early Ernie Kovac! He was fun, a real powerhouse. Suggestion ... you might contact Mary Garvy, I think she often posts on mudcat as mgarvy. She lives close to Portland and probably knows the current folk scene well. She might be able to lead the search, but I obviously can't speak for her. Thanks, deckman. I even have a vague recollection of having met a Mary Garvy or Garvey - way, way back when. But there seems to be no mgarvy on Mudcat. With your sterling encouragement, maybe I'll refresh a couple times more before giving up. Yeah, there are some really nitty gritty folks up in the Northwest. I kind of miss them down here in wimpy California. Mike was one of them. When I knew him, he had a sidekick named Nick - I don't recall the last name, but his nickname was Beat Nick. A contrast to Mike.

But, I do have a GREAT IDEA for my retirement years! I think I'll start a service offering to locate "olde" folksingers from the West Coast that taught me all my bad songs in the 50's and sixties! Nothing recent, but I remember Mike Russo from back in the early sixties. He played during the time I knew him with Ron Brentano, who was a great banjo frailer; very relaxed kind of player. Mike was, as Deckman has noted, a "powerhouse", and at that time was playing a twelve string - I don't remember what make. He did some raucous blues - the kind that would wear away the pickguard over time. I was playing with an old time string band called the Turkey Pluckers, and we'd occasionally trek down to Portland to j..oin them in a club or just around the living room. I think, Bob, you may have heard them in Seattle in concerts at Eagleson Hall in the U. District. Think I still have some old silkscreened posters of those concerts tucked away somewhere.

Toadfrog, thanks for refreshing this. Wish I could add some newer information on Mike. We had a lot of good music with those guys.

I have that old Arhoolie record which is no longer in catalogue. I recall buying it with a whole batch of Arhoolie records that a music store was selling cheaply in the early '80s. It has him on vocals and guitar on side 1 - 'De Kalb blues', 'Delia's fling', 'Buck Dancer's choice' and others - and on piano and vocals on side 2 - 'Sixth Avenue Stomp', 'Stack O'Lee' and others. It can't have made much of an impression on me at the time. I think I played it once and filed it away. On the strength of the enthusiasm expressed in this thread, I'll have to give him another listen.

The sleeve note indicates that Russo and Ron Brentano did the music for an award-winning Bonneville Power Administration film, titled 'Intertie', and that Russo accompanied Fred McDowell on an Arhoolie LP called 'Fred McDowell and His Blues Boys'.

With that batch of Arhoolies, I also picked up some blues stuff on an Italian label called Appaloosa. There was an LP called 'Hog Wild' by a harmonica player/vocalist/songwriter by the name of Andy J. Forest. He certainly made an impression on me, particularly on his own composition 'You'll Never Leave'. I never found out anything about him nor anything else by him. Has anyone heard of him?

Ebbie: Yes! That is correct. Mike is alive and well in Gearhart, Oregon. I spoke to his wife this weekend, and she said that he still plays but has not been doing public performances, but that he probably would be happy to hear from people who remember him from way back. I knew Mike Russo well. He and Ron Brentano played every Friday and Saturday night at the 13th Avenue Gallery in Portland in the 1960's. I guess the venue started out on 13th Avenue, but when I joined the gig, it was located in a storefront under the Hawthorn Bridge. The promoter, Paul Hebb, also brought in other artists, such as Jesse Fuller.

I have many fond memories of listening to Mike and Ron over mulled cider. I have a number of tapes - now converted to CD - including a long interview with Mike that I used for a project in college (I monored in ethnomusicology).

FYI: Mike's 12-string was a Stella and his 6-string was a Martin.

Mike and Ron Brentano (deceased) frequently played at the Thirteenth Avenue Gallery with George Smith. George was a prolific luthier, particularly well known for his 12-string guitars. Mike may well have played a Stella 12-string, but I believe also played one of Smith's. Mike's playing was rock solid and potent. It complemented Ron's tasteful, understated banjo and vocals in a way that charged audiences and inspired many young musicians, myself included.

If its the Mike Russo I know of, I grew up listening to recording of him and my uncle from home recordings in their living room, late 50s I think. He played and sang many Ledbelly songs and it was great still is! Always wanted to meet the man. Fantastic musician.

I was a regular at the 13th Avenue Gallery (it was originally on 13th Avenue in theSellwood district of Portland) in 1959-61. Mike and Ron were regular performers.   Ron Brentano went on to work for many years for the Oregon Historical Society, which a few years back put out a CD of his work. Another regular performer at the Gallery was Mel Lyman (years before his subsequent career as a harmonica player and guru). Paul Hebb also sold me my first copy of the Little Red Song Book (13th edition). Great times, and I still pick up a banjo now and then.

I've been listening to an old Mike Russo "album" - burned to CD by an old, old friend of mine 2 weeks ago, and my heart is aching listening to this wildly talented guy. Especially a rolling boogie piano cut - "Mustbe, mustbe, the end of time". I think you guys are too early - we used to sit in rapture at Reed College in the early 60's and listen to his astonishing 12 string playing. Folk music at the end of the Beatnik Era when Leadbelly was a cherished secret while everyone else in high school was being drowned with bubble gum rock and Bobby Vinton syrup. Mike Russo was a revelation, and now he feels like a gift. I was told - by people who knew him, that something had happened and he'd quit playing and disappeared. The latest I've heard is that he's at the coast - maybe Seaside. Doesn't play anymore and won''t talk about it. What an incredible musician. What magic it was to sit in front of him. I hope he's well & happy - and I hope he knows we're still thinking about him.

I just finished reading this thread and I thought I would pass along a couple of places where you can hear and see some of Mike Russo from the 60's There is a KPFA radio broadcast called Folk Music with Rolf Cahn: Jo Mapes in Concert at San Francisco State College, Spring 1955 (December 17, 1962). Rolf must have had some spare time up his sleeve because he stuck a couple of tracks from other artist other than Jo at the end of his program. One of these extra songs was Mike Russo singing Leadbelly's "Cry For Me" from a Jan 1960 concert at Reed College, Portland, Ore. You can download the entire program from

Ron Brentano worked for the Oregon Historical Society for many years, and they put together a CD of his music that includes some cuts with Mike Russo. The CD was being remaindered when I visited OHS last year. They might have in their archives some recordings that didn't make the CD.

I don't know if there are any copyright issues involved (not sure if Mike and Ron had the same attitude as the Grateful Dead) but I have several CDs I would be happy to share at cost (or put in an FTP site): (1) Mike Russo and Ron Brentano at Reed College, July 1965, 2 CDs; (2) Mike Russo and Ron Brentano at Westminster Church (Portland), October 1965, 2 CDs; (3) Mike Russo at Brighton Chapel, Pacific University (Forest Grove), June 1971, 2 CDs; Mike Russo and Ron Brentano at a private party, Portland, August 1965; Interview of Mike Russo and Ron Brentano, Portland, November 1965, 2 CDs (material for a college paper I did for a class in ethnomusicology).

I contacted Arhoolie a couple of times to see if they were interested, but I never heard a thing from them: yes, no, or get lost!

I heard Mike Russo at our house in SE Milwaukie in the early 70's,
he had a younger brother, think John. Met John at U.of O.
Mike played in a jam session with some other musicians, maybe Jim Mills, a fantastic banjo player. Doug McCarty, finger style guitar player may have been there as well. Remember Mike had a 1938 Oldsmobile sedan with dual side mount tires..cool car.

Mike Russo was playing acoustic folk music in the Portland area when I first moved to town in 1961. I saw him live a few times, usually as part of a duo called Russo & Brentano. Russo played guitar; I forget what Brentano played. They put on competent, enthusiastic shows, and were always well-received every time I saw them. Russo in particular was a lively, engaging entertainer.
I have a near-mint copy of a Mike Russo 7" 45 called "Darlin' It's Your Turn To Cry", with "Back in 1953" on the B-side. The record is copyrighted 1976/1977. At the age of 15 when I first learned about them, Mike Russo and Ron Brentano became musical gods for me.   As a beginning student of guitar and banjo styles at the time, I saw them whenever possible, be it coffeehouse or college campus. Insofar as the Portland area, they were the first musical aggregate to perform acoustic blues, Appalachian and bluegrass music – and they were accessible, you could see them, talk to talk and learn.   

The movie "Intertie," produced by the Bonneville Power Administration which has been referred to in this thread, and which features the music of Russo and Brentano can be found on YouTube under it's title.

When I saw them perform, Mike Russo was playing a Gibson 12-string and Martin D-18 6-string.   The Gibson 12-string had a J-200 body style – it was a magnificent instrument in both sound and appearance.   I never saw Mike using a Stella and in the YouTube videos mentioned in this thread of Mike playing in Seattle, it looks like he's using a Harmony 12-string.

Besides the Intertie sound track, the only professional recordings I know of where you can actually hear Russo and Brentano as a duo are on the CD the Oregon Historical Society produced of Ron Brentano's music.

I have some recordings of my father and friends on KRAB. John Dwyer, Suzi Macaleer, Don Firth, Bob Nelson, and others. These are primarily from the 1960s into the 1980s (I think they might be that late.) I'll have to look for them.

My father (John Dwyer) bought lots of cassette tapes of performers at various events. Do you happen to know if he produced any performance cassettes and what he might have called them? (I see lots of album titles on the narrow side of the tapes I can see from here). Though that is something I would expect he might already have copies of.

I used to go hear Mike and Ron Brentano play at the original 13th Avenue Gallery in Sellwood (an old district in near-in SE Portland). They were part of my introduction to folk music in the early 1960s. Yes, Mike solo was a powerhouse guitarist on both 6- and 12-string instruments and played a driving barrelhouse-style piano as well. All of those were well matched to his powerful voice! I fondly remember his duets with Ron, who played banjo and guitar. Ron passed away a few years ago after heading the Oregon Historical Society in Portland for a long time; last I heard of Mike, he was living on the southern Oregon Coast and not performing publicly anymore. He's probably in his 80s now (I'm in my late 70s, and he was at least 5 years older). John Ullman in Seattle has a private collection of tape recordings and films of both the duo and Mike solo that I'd love to see distributed, but I don't know how royalties on that would be allotted.
