Being a former (former?! who am I kidding here) rock-n-roller, I like a little bit of everything, with the possible exception of freeform jazz and most rap music. I did get the Uncle Kracker CD, though, and it ain't too bad.

Last two things I bought: Nelly Furtado and Lifehouse.

What's on the CD now: Chase the Buffalo by Pierce Pettis. can't get that one anymore, so I'm told.

Yes Kim!
I keep coming back to this particular Joe Jackson album (my favorite of his) because of the arrangements and the energy of the young musicians he'd hired to play on it. Just a superb, toe tapping album.

Listening to Greek language tapes in the car as usual at this time of year (doesn't seem to improve my CRS though!). Put one of Rick Fielding's CDs on over the weekend and Herself said "Who's that?" "Oh, your friend in Canada,I like his voice". So, Rick, She Who is Never Wrong has given her seal of approval!

I am not artist specific in the music I enjoy, which includes folk, classical, jazz, dixieland, ragtime, hymns, blues, big band, rock n roll, new age, and whatever category includes Jimmy Buffet. Although there are exceptions, as I general rule I prefer not to listen to C&W, heavy metal rock or rap.

John--John Prine wrote "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness," and sings it with Nanci on "Other Voices, Other Rooms," a marvelous album that inspired me to add three particular songs to my repertoire: Kate Wolf's "Across the Great Divide," Townes Van Zandt's "Tecumseh Valley," and Woodie Guthrie's "Do Re Mi." But I ain't done yet--got my eye on learning Ralph McTell's "From Clare to Here," too....

Thanks, Matt. But hey, the way I see it, it's not that I don't acknowledge some (very fuzzy, overlapping) boundaries between musical genres. It's just that I see no reason not to cross them. Enriches one's cultural experience, I say.

Oh, yeah, and I forgot Iggy Pop, the Who, the Clash, Queen, Toots and the Maytalls, and John Renbourn.

Chris

This week in the disc changer we have the following -

Oh , Brother....
My permanent Dylan fix - currently "John Wesley Harding", 'It's not a house, it's a home'
Blind Willie Johnson has been in the changer for 2 weeks and counting, been here before , will be here again.
Doc Watson - Southbound. I just borrowed it from a friend , great.
Tarbox Ramblers- If you like pre-WW1 American music, BUY THEIR DEBUT CD ON ROUNDER. I am not affiliated with the band in anyway.
Good Morning Blues - A Compilation featuring Leadbelly, Rev. Gary Davis and a guy Named Dan Smith. Surprisingly, the little known Dan Smith outshines even Rev. Davis here!! That is saying a lot Rev. Davis is my hero and spiritual guide.Anyone ever heard of Dan? Or knoe where to find a full length collecyion of his work?
Van Morrison and Lonnie Donegan - The Skiffle Sessions. Anyone know the origins or chord prog. to "I Wanna Go Home"? - djh

The quality of the singing is what's most important for me. A random list of favourites would include Waylon Jennings, The Clancy Brothers, polyphonic music from Georgia and Corsica, and Bryn Terfel's Welsh album, We'll Keep a Welcome. I became a member of the Mudcat just a couple of months ago, and have been introduced to artists I would never have heard otherwise: The Boarding Party, and Janet Russell, a singer I know nothing about other than that she sings what one of the best rendition of a traditional ballad I have ever heard, The Dowie Dens of Yarrow on Fyre and Sworde: Songs of the Border Reivers. I will definitely be buying as much of her stuff as I can my hands on. Fyre and Sworde is my current favourite CD - every single song is superb.

I listen to nearly everything - partially because I like to, and partially because I'm brutally forced to. (My parents' CD player is louder than mine!)

At the moment: Niall Keegan, Flook!, 422, Michael McGoldrick, KATE RUSBY, Steeleye Span, Last Night's Fun, The Poozies, Bob Foz and Stu Luckly, Jez Lowe, Catriona MacDonald, hundreds of varying big bands, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Kevin Montgomery.

Basically, everything that has a tune!

Actually I will sit still for anything except rap and opera. Favorites? Miss Odetta, Harry Smith, Judy Collins, Stan Rogers, Weavers together or individually; Kathy Mattea (very impressive). When things get too serious, crank in the Austin Lounge Lizards--very clever spoofists and accomplished musicians.

Lately, my #1 fave is the (so-called) Complete Basement Tapes of Bob Dylan (5 cd's, bootleg only, mucho dinero, TOTALLY WORTH IT!) Man, the crazy stuff that ran thru his brain that summer! This includes a version of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" with totally different, and funnier lyrics and perhaps his greatest unreleased song "I'm Not There (1956)." (If you're familiar with this song maybe you can answer me this - What's the 1956 about?) Also - Jim White "Wrong-Eyed Jesus" -The new Millenium box - Any Kurt Boettcher fans out there? -Carter Family -George Jones -Beach Boys - always. Especially "Surf's Up" lately. -Iarla O Lionaird -N Sync - just kidding

Thanks for refreshing! Good topic....

John Flynn's CD's ALL of 'em! The new one is called To The Point and is just awesome. His knack for writing lyrics is amazing and in person his ability to put the audience in his back pocket is uncanny. The best part? To the Point is a live CD....If you can get ahold of a copy, I highly suggest it!!

Right now I mosty listen to:
Lord Buckley
The Clancey Bros
Celia Cruz
Finbar Furey
The Chieftans
But, like many people with a record collection that's too big to actually listen to, I could say I get as much or even more satisfaction from running my eye along the spines of the records and cd's and remembering the music in them. Memory may pale beside actual listening, but it can nevertheless be VERY good.

This week I've been all over the place (musically speaking). I've been listening to snippets of the forthcoming "Counting Crows" C.D. which led me to dig out some of there old stuff (I love "August and everything after), Then I was listening to David Bowie being interviewed this week and that brought back so many memories of my youth that I had to listen to "Hunky Dory".A tape in my car of our very own Jerry Rasmussen (my favourite-"Handful of songs").I've also listened to a bit of Django and, on the express instruction of my daughter, Abba, followed by Kylie Minogue!
If it's done well, I'll listen to it!

For pure voice quality, it's hard to find Patsy Cline's match, IMHO. BTW, if anyone is deep into obscure artists who rarely recorded - I LOVE the voice of "Baby Ruth" Davis of the Davis Sisters. From Philadelphia, they recorded in the early 50s, I believe for Gotham. The feeling in Ruth's beautiful voice beats anything i've ever heard, including Mahalia.

I also like Clifton Chenier, Slim Harpo, Professor Longhair, Larry Williams, Spiritual QCs with Williams Bros.(no relation to Larry), Solomon Burke, Yeska, Iris Dement, John Prine, Hank Williams (no relation to...).

Gosh, there are so many more; if this thread lives much longer, maybe i'll return and not let my favorites be neglected!

Depends on my mood. Those in heaviest rotation are anything by Mr. Stanley Turrentine, Gene Harris, Stan Getz, Carmen MacRae, Los Lobos, Mark Knopfler with or without the rest of Dire Straits,The Swan Silvertones and the Harmonizing Four, a mix of rhythm and blues groups like the Penguins, the Del Vikings and the Moonglows, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry and for folk, I always end up going back to the stuff recorded in the twenties... Charlie Poole, Mississippi John Hurt and almost everything off the Anthology Of American Folk Music. Mix in Reverend Gary Davis, Leo Kottke and Jerry Lee Lewis and simmer until done. Season to taste. :-)
