If you have any information I'd appreciate an email to: mtyler@netscape.com

thanks,

PS: This song comes up in some historical novels called the Flashman series, and fans of those books have been seeking info on this song. thks, mark

well, mtyler, I found you a midi site which has, among many others, this song, and an adress, where you could get the lyrics.

Thank you very much sir! I've looked at the site and gotten the midi. They do want me to purchase the book to get the lyrics, which I'll do at a pinch.

Cheers, and thanks again!

Mark

Subject: Lyr Add: DRINK, PUPPY, DRINK (G.J. Whyte-Melville)

The link provides only some of the lyrics
Here's all of them

DRINK, PUPPY, DRINK
(G. J. Whyte-Melville)

1. Here's to the fox in his earth below the rocks!
And here's to the line that we follow,
And here's to the hound with his nose upon the ground,
Though merrily we whoop and we holloa.

CHORUS: Then drink, puppy, drink,
And let ev'ry puppy drink,
That is old enough to lap and to swallow;
For he'll grow into a hound,
So we'll pass the bottle round,
And merrily we'll whoop and we'll holloa!

2. Here's to the horse and the rider too, of course,
And here's to the rally o' the hunt, boys;
Here's a health to ev'ry friend, who can struggle to the end,
And here's to the Tally-Ho in front, boys.

3. Here's to the gap and the timber that we rap,
Here's to the white thorn and the black, too;
And here's to the pace that puts life into the chase,
And the fence that gives a moment to the pack, too.

4. Oh, the pack is staunch and true, now they run from scent to view,
And it's worth the risk to life and limb and neck, boys;
To see them drive and stoop till they finish with "Who whoop"
Forty minutes on the grass without a check, boys.

Whooo-hoooo!

or should I say "Tally-hoooooo!"

As another Flashy fan, I'm delighted to be able to read through the whole song finally. Yet another example of just how thorough George Macdonald Fraser is with his historical references and cultural interlocking!

There are other little tidbits of music in the books - don't know how relevant to Mudcatters - such as "He had the latest joke about Alice Lowe, or Nelson's Column, could tell you beforehand about the new race cup for Ascot, and had songs from the 'Bohemian Girl' played in his drawing-room months before the opera was seen in London." (Flashman's Lady)

If I find anything else I'll see about tracking it down/posting it!

The sheet music for DRINK PUPPY DRINK can be seen in Students' Songs by William Henry Hills (New York: Moses King, 1886).
