Interesting but unsatisfying story. The part about the mob getting Haley to play some fiddle tunes for them before they killed him reminded me of a scene in "Cold Mountain", so I wondered if it could have been an inspiration for the book. Apparently not, I found this explanation from Charles Frazier of the historical roots of his novel: http://www.salon.com/july97/colddiary970709.html

I think it's safe to say that a characteristic of the culture that both stories describe is a fierce and frequently violent competition for access to the resources that provide mountaineers with a precarious livelihood.

i was looking on www.johnhartford.com and found some info on
the fiddlers that he had collected some tunes from.
I was looking for info on some of the fiddlers he chronicalled
Namely J.P. Fraley http://www.boundforshadygrove.com/boundforshadygrove--fraley.htm
and Blind Ed Haley
http://www.johnhartford.com/fiddle/haley.htm
here is an article about an arcaelogical dig
that was sponsored by John to find the truth of the murder
of two fellows Haley and McCoy who were murdered by a mob.
McCoy was a member of the McCoy family who was famous for fueding
with the Hatfields. Haley was the father of the fiddler
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian/issues00/mar00/phenom_mar00.html
John Hartford was a treasure! Thanks to him there is a lot of music which has been preserved for future fiddlers and listeners.

There have been many who leave us with less music when they go, and often the songs we write to honor them fill the void. But what song could make up for lossing John Hartford?

Dear John,

I am writing here because this is where I learned of your death. You are a fine fellow. I wish I could have seen you one more time before this. I never saw you when you you were bad sick. I haven't been around those places where we used to meet. I remember you playing and singing great . You are a model member of an elite class of warm and rakish souls. You touched folks right on down to the dance. Good job!

A sad time for music, but I'm glad for him. He really was in bad shape. He played in Pittsburgh, a couple months ago. Or more correctly, his band played and he sang and drank cough drop tea. He couldn't use his left arm anymore to finger the fretboard. He looked absolutely miserable. He gave everything he had, and I believe he's in a much better place now.

I have in mind a song I've heard from the Dry Branch Fire Squad:

"But I can got to them"
Though tears my fill my eyes, I'm happy in my soul
I'm thinking of those friends who walk on streets of gold
Since Jesus called them home, Up there to live with him
I cannot bring them back
But I can go to them.

{chorus} Oh, so many precious friends and many loved ones too
Are waiting there for me somewhere beyond the blue
Since Jesus called them home, Up there to live with him,
I can not bring them back,
But I can go to them {end chorus}

So times I've come to weep, But I shall weep no more
They're living there with Him, on that celestial shore
They're truly satisfied up there where everything is good
I cannot bring them back.
I would not if I could

{repeat chorus} I would not if I could

I think I have said this before... John Hartford was one of the things Mister brought to the marriage. Eleven years ago I had no idea who he was. I knew Gentle on My Mind because my family was a bunch of Glen Campbell fans, and at every gathering my uncle asked if I couldn't play it on the piano. No I couldn't play it on the piano! Jeez!

Anyway we went off to see him one night at the Ryman. Mister says, this guy is SO cool, he dances and plays the banjo at the same time. Hmm. Sure enough. Loved the show, and the rapport he had with the audience.

HEard him on Riders Radio Theater a few times. What a hoot.

Then, of course, when I started playing the fiddle, well, I just had to have that Ed Haley CD he did. Three years ago, John played at a benefit concert for the place where I work. He came in and played and left. He looked tired. But he sounded great. What a fiddler.

My job was to get the performing artists to autograph the posters so we could put them in the auction. I stuck my head in the door backstage and I said, Mr. Hartford, sir, when you get a chance, if you wouldn't mind signing these posters please? He nodded at me and I shut the door. (I was too dumbstruck to say anything else.)

I don't think he ever got around to signing the posters...

Just thought Catters would be interested in the obituary by Associated Press, which was forwarded to me by a good friend.

This was on the NanciNet List today.

JUNE 04, 22:17 EST Songwriter Hartford, 63, Dies By JIM PATTERSON Associated Press Writer NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - John Hartford, a versatile and wry performer who wrote the standard ``Gentle on My Mind'' and turned his back on Hollywood to return to bluegrass music, died Monday at a hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was 63. The singer-songwriter, comedian, tap-clog dancer, television performer and riverboat enthusiast had cancer for more than a decade. He died at about 4:45 p.m., said hospital spokesman Russ Gannon. ``Gentle on My Mind'' has been broadcast on radio or television more than 6 million times, according to Broadcast Music Incorporated, which collects song royalties. It has been recorded more than 300 times, most prominently by Glen Campbell in 1967. Hartford's career rambled from Hollywood to Nashville, with stops writing and performing on network television, thousands of shows at bluegrass clubs and festivals, and stints as a licensed steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River. At the height of his fame in the early 1970s, Hartford reconsidered his decision to take an offer to star in a detective series on CBS. Instead, he returned to Nashville and resumed his career as an innovative, relatively low-profile bluegrass singer-songwriter. ``I knew that if I did it, I would never live it down,'' Hartford said of the television series in a 2000 interview. ``Because then when I went backto music, people would start saying, `Oh, he didn't make it in acting so he's gone country.''' Born in New York City and raised in St. Louis, Hartford was enthralled as a youngster by riverboats and bluegrass music, in particular that of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. He moved to Nashville in 1965, and his first album ``John Hartford Looks at Life'' was released the following year. Hartford's version of ``Gentle on My Mind'' from second album ``Earthwords & Music'' was a minor hit in 1967. The song is about a hobo whose mind is eased by the thought of a former lover. Hartford moved to California in 1968, landing a job writing and performing on ``The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.'' His went on to the cast of ``The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.'' Returning to Nashville in 1971, Hartford released the landmark acoustic album ``Aereo-Plain'' and continued to record until his death. He was one of the performers on the hit soundtrack to the film ``O Brother, Where Art Thou?'' --- On the Net: John Hartford site:

John Hartford was not at the top of my list of performers, but perhaps he should have been. He was fortunate to write "a big one" that produced royalties, but that song is not what John was about. John clearly grew from the roots of American music and never forgot them. He was a fine writer, but he also enjoyed "the old songs." He was also an excellent performer. He was the first acoustic act I saw with broadcast microphones and instrument jacks. He used this modern technology to get close to his audience, that is, right in the middle.

To my way of thinking, John Hartford represents what "folk music" is all about. I'm happy to hear from folks who knew him, that he was in private the same man he was in public. The world is diminished and I am sadder without him. May he rest in peace.

John Hartford was a great musician, a great songwriter and a very nice guy.

The cause of his death was cancer.

The cause of his cancer was smoking. John lost many years of potential life and we lost his presence in our lives because of smoking.

If you smoke, stop. That would honor his memory.
