This Rev. Gary Davis song is mentioned in a couple of old threads, but no words. I have a recording but I would like to know what words YOU have for it. Mine is a newer CD of Davis' sacred songs interpreted by Andy Cohen. So you may verses more faithful to the original, or verses I lack.

Rick Fielding-- I know this is one of your favorites. Help with autoharp chords, since you know how mine is set up? (I took a whack at it but got lost in short order.)

Here's how I remeber learning it from the good reverend himself at the Interlude Coffee House in Queens, NY, around 1964. Chord name comes immediately before the word on which the change occurs.

[D] I'll do my [B7] last [E7] singing in this [A7] world some- [D] where,

I'll do my [B7] last [E7] singing in this world [E6] some- [A7] where,

[D] I don't know where it's gonna [F#7] be,

But the [G] Lord, He knows [Edim] me,

And [D] I'll do my [B7] last [E7] singing in this [A7] world some- [D] where.

This is just the bare bones, and it leaves out the changes and finger picking flourishes that fill the unsung measures between some of the lines. You can figure them out. If you don't like the key of D, move it down a whole step to C.

--- Steve

What could be better than goloing to bed with that song in my head and waking to find it all arranged, and authentically too?

In our denomination we talk about apostolic succession. This must be a sort of that same thing.

Now all I need is a way to get an F# on my autoharp. I was afraid that was where I'd gone wrong... Hee hee heee.... I think I know how, without cutting new bars.

Thank you SO MUCH.

~Susan

Maybe this should not be harvested till others post the verses they have.

The Andy Cohen version I have is a little different from Steve's above.... sweeter-tuned; and words a bit different, which I understand was typical with Davis, depending on mood and situation. Till I hear a Davis version of the melody (and set up Autoharp #2 for the F#), here's my arrangement. (It will be done in church, when I am ready, as an offertory.)

I WILL DO MY LAST SINGING IN THIS LAND

I will do my last singin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last singin' in this land... somewhere.
I don't know where it may be--
Maybe somewhere sailing over the sea.
I will do my last singin' in this land, somewhere.

I will do my last travelin' in this land, child, somewhere.
I will do my last travelin' in this land... somewhere.
I don't know, and I can't tell where--
Maybe somewhere sailing in the air.
I will do my last travelin' in this land, child, somewhere.

I will pay my last visit in this land, somewhere.
I will pay my last visit in this land... somewhere.
I don't know, and I can't tell where--
Just sure my Jesus will be there!
I will pay my last visit in this land, child, somewhere.

I will do my last moanin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last moanin' in this land... somewhere.
I may be somewhere down on my knees--
Askin' my good Lord to give my poor heart ease.
I will do my last moanin' in this land, child, somewhere.

I will do my last preachin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last preachin' in this land... somewhere.
I don't know where it may be--
Just that my good Lord would still believe in me...
I will do my last preachin' in this land, child, somewhere.

GUITAR CHORDS (Steve Suffet)
[D]I'll do my [B7]last [E7]singing in this [A7]world some- [D]where,
I'll do my [B7]last [E7]singing in this world [E6]some- [A7]where,
[D]I don't know where it's gonna [F#7]be,
But the [G]Lord, He knows [Edim]me,
And [D]I'll do my [B7]last [E7]singing in this [A7]world some- [D]where.

This is just the bare bones, and it leaves out the changes and finger picking flourishes that fill the unsung measures between some of the lines. You can figure them out. (S.S)

AUTOHARP CHORDS (Susan Hinton):
[G]I will [A]do my [D]last [G]singing in this [A]world[A7] some- [D]where, [G,D]
[G]I will [A]do my [D]last [A7]singing in this [G]world some- [A]where, [A7]
I don't [D]know where it's gonna [D7]be,
But the [G]Lord, He knows [E7]me,
[G]I will [A]do my [D]last [G]singing in this [A]world[A7] some- [D]where. [G,D]

I think it's about being ready, any time, any place.

My additional (floating) verses:

I will do my last workin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last workin' in this land... somewhere.
I may not finish every last thing,
But I hope He finds me workin' for Him.
I will do my last workin' in this land, somewhere.

I will do my last prayin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last prayin' in this land... somewhere.
I don't know what it may be--
But I know that He prayed for me.
I will do my last prayin' in this land, somewhere.

I will do my last lovin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last lovin' in this land... somewhere.
You know lovin' is not all been the same,
The best I've done in His Jesus' Name.
I will do my last lovin' in this land, somewhere.

I will do my last service in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last service in this land... somewhere.
I hope to serve Him till the end,
And be (like Him) a faithful friend.
I will do my last service in this land, somewhere.

I will do my last laughin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last laughin' in this land... somewhere.
I dunno what I'll be laughin' about,
My joy in knowing Him, no doubt!
I will do my last laughin' in this land, somewhere.

I will do my last tryin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last tryin' in this land... somewhere.
I don't know when He'll call for me,
But when He does, I'll answer gratefully.
I will do my last tryin' in this land, somewhere.

I will do my last singin' in this land, somewhere.
I will do my last singin' in this land... somewhere.
I don't know which tune or song,
But I'll praise Jesus, ages long.
I will do my last singin' in this land, somewhere.

~Susan

In this line:

You know lovin' is not all been the same,

[been] was a leftover that should have been axed, from the pasting.

Line should read:

You know lovin' is not all the same,

A folk song is a song that you sing the way you think you remember it. Seems to apply here!

Or a song that no matter how you screw it up-- cuz you're doing it cuz you JUST GOTTA-- it's still wonderful.
