Subject: RE: Lyr Req: praise the lord and pass the ammunit From: ddw Date: 06 Jun 01 - 12:08 AM Didn't know there was a song about this. I've always known it as a quote from Howell Forgy, an army chaplain, during the battle of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Things were looking pretty bleak and someone asked him something to the effect of "What're we going to do now?" His reply was "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition." cheers, david |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: praise the lord and pass the ammunit From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jun 01 - 12:08 AM I searched the Mudcat and the Digital Tradition, but couldn't find it. If somebody finds it, please be sure to include songwriter information when you post the lyrics. I already have this thread bookmarked for harvesting because I'm sure somebody will come up with a quick answer. -Joe Offer, 4000 miles from my songbook collection- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: praise the lord and pass the ammunit From: ddw Date: 06 Jun 01 - 12:13 AM Geez, Joe — you and I were slow off the mark with that one. While I was checking my facts in Bartlett's Quotations, ol' 'Spaw jumped in there with a link to the song. Course he probably has Cletus and Reg, Reg and Reg do all his research..... *BG* david |
Subject: Lyr Add: PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Jun 01 - 12:18 AM Sorry Gene....My Mom used to sing this all the time when I was small in the 50's. She had the sheet music and I always enjoyed singin the PTLAPTA part.
Geez you're picky Joe! We already linked the lyrics but since you're so slow and behind the 8 ball.........
Down went the gunner; a bullet was his fate.
{Refrain}
Praise the Lord and swing into position.
Yes, the sky pilot said it.
Shouting Praise the Lord, we're on a mighty mission.
{Refrain twice} Spaw |

Subject: Lyr Add: PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION From: Genie Date: 18 Jul 08 - 08:31 PM Spaw, thanks for posting the lyrics. That link above doesn't take you to them any more. The lyrics as sung on the recording I have (from a WWII Songs album) are just a tad different in a couple places. PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION (Words and Music by Frank Loesser Music by James Sanderson) Down went the gunner, a bullet was his fate. Down went the gunner, and then the gunner's mate. Up jumped the sky pilot, gave the boys a look, And manned the gun himself as he laid aside The Book, shouting: "Praise The Lord and pass the ammunition! Praise The Lord and pass the ammunition! Praise The Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free! Praise The Lord, and swing into position - Can't afford to be a politician! [Can't afford to sit around a-wishin'] Praise The Lord! We're all between perdition And the deep blue sea!" Yes, the sky pilot said it, You've got to give him credit For a son-of-a-son-of-a-gun to run free, Shouting: "Praise The Lord, we're on a mighty mission! All aboard! We're all a-goin' fishin'! Praise The Lord and pass the ammunition And we'll all stay free." |
