I'm looking for the lyrics to a childrens song called "Willie the Spider". The first lines are: "Willie the Spider had too many legs and lots of little shoes hung up neatly on pegs". It goes on to say that by the time he had all his shoes put on and laced that "it was time for poor Willie to go back to bed". It's an important message for all children, i.e. life is one futile thing after another. This is the first record I remember owning. I can remember the color of the record label (tan with brown lettering) and the brand of phonograph (Birch) after 45 years, but not the important thing - the lyrics. Can anyone help me?

It appears (on google) that Captain Kangaroo did a Willy the Spider song or recitation with that theme on.

that's the sort of song that might have been written just for the Captain Kangaroo show and maybe issued by the producers. Small circulation can equal oblivion. It is obviously not a 'classic', and though there may be the odd copy somewhere, if THIS bunch doesn't know it, you may look for a good while...

It's definitely pre-Capt. Kangaroo; I had the record when I was very young, well before the Captain hit the tube. All I remember are the opening lines, with a slight difference from RangerSteve's recollection: "Now, Willie the Spider had too many legs, and dozens of shoes neatly hung up on pegs..." It scans better. I do remember feeling bad for Willie but not why. Thanks for clearing that up.

I was looking for the lyrics to this sonf when I ran across this string. i used to listen to this song on Captain Kangaroo

"Willie the spider had too many legs,
he had dozens of shoes he had hung up on pegs,
so my little friend here's a lesson for you,
don't grumble each time that you put on your shoes."

ASCAP says WILLY THE SPIDER was written by Irvine T. Macgregor, who wrote a lot of children's songs. Unfortunately, I can't find any other reference to Irvine T. Macgregor.

Little Willy the spider wouldn't get out of bed.
He yawned the whole morning and scratched on his head.
You see, Willy the spider had too many legs.
He had dozens of shoes neatly hung up on pegs.
Well, early one morning while it was still dark,
He tried all his shoes on just for a lark.
He ran down the stairs with a smile on his face,
But he fell with a crash when he slipped on a lace.
You see, Willy the spider had too many legs.
He had dozens of shoes neatly hung up on pegs.
So, my little friends, here's a lesson for you:
Don't grumble each time that you put on your shoes.

I believe a Jack Harmon sang this and others back in the early 60's or late 50's. He also had a song on the record "Daniel the spaniel" about a mischievous dog.

My mom lost the album - Dad thinks it was Bob Hannon. I don't know -- any other fans out there? I was born in 61 and we danced and danced to these songs. Any help or info? Thanks

Steve -

Scotty MacGregor (Irvine T.) was my dad and as you can imagine, reading about the impressions the lyrics to one of his songs had on you growing up is quite emotional. Willy the Spider was just one of many children's songs my father wrote during the years my brother and I were children ourselves. I am nearly 62 and my brother is 67 and until this very moment I never really fully appreciated the significance of his work. To me, he was always "doing his thing," writing, playing the guitar endlessly and trying to earn a buck. Many of his greatest song-writing accomplishments barely paid the bills, even though at the time performers like The Four Aces, Rosemary Clooney & Oscar Brand were using his material. My father was the consummate example of performers of his time and perhaps today as well. Right up until his death at the age of 92 years old, he was still writing his ideas on paper napkins, the margins of the daily newspaper and any other scrap of paper at his disposal. Incidentally, his inspiration for the name Willy, my uncle Bill, the youngest and last surviving member of my father's family of 5 brothers and sisters. Here's a few other tidbits about my dad that you might find interesting or simply obscure. He and my mom are buried in Tyrone, PA where my mother, Virginia grew up. My dad and Lorne Greene (yes, Bonanza fame) MC'd the Macy's Parade on CBS in the early 50's together. Many of his songs were regularly featured on Captain Kangaroo, as was he himself. He had his own show on CBS called Sergeant Safety, and one of his proudest compositions which never was published was a song he wrote shortly after President Kennedy was assassinated called - I'll Wear That Hat On Monday. Finally, as I recall the chorus to Willy the Spider went like this:

Little Willy the Spider wouldn't get out of bed.
He yawned the whole morning and scratched on his head.
He had so many legs that it gave him the blues.
All he did the whole morning was put on his shoes.

My brother and I have an extensive array of publications and records that my father did over the course of his life and I'm pretty sure "Willy" is among them. I would be happy to give you a copy or another one of his songs if I can't locate it. Feel free to contact me at gbmac22@aol.com and thanks for keeping my father's work alive.

Regards, Gary MacGregor

My family had a tape recorder from about 1952, and we documented our lives periodically with that machine. One of the family tapes contains a group of children's songs which we couldn't identify....until now. The songs are Bimbo, Little Red Caboose, Daniel the Spaniel, I've Got to Have a Pony, I've Been Working On the Railroad, The Little Engine That Could, Going to Boston, Willie the Spider, and The Big Red Fire Engine. I'm pretty sure this must be the Hannon album that you've all been referencing.

Let me know if anyone wants me to burn a CD of this collection.

Here's what I remember of the song:

Little Willie the spider wouldn't get out of bed.
He lay the whole morning and scratched on his head.
He had so many legs that it gave him the blues.
All he did the whole morning was put on his shoes.

He woke up one morning when it was still dark
And tied all his shoes on just for a lark.
He ran down the stairs with a smile on his face
And fell with a CRASH when he tripped on a lace.

So my little friends here's a lesson for you,
Don't grumble each time that you put on your shoes.

I remember the tune very well and have sung it once in a while all these years.

I have a copy of "Bob Hannon Sings for Children" on vinyl. I loved the record as a kid, and my children loved it too. I don't know what its copyright status is, but I would be delighted to make MP3's of it available to anyone who is interested. The vinyl is by no means pristine, but it is listenable as far as I remember.

"Willy.." may have appeared on other recordings too, but this is the one with "Daniel the Spaniel", "Little Red Caboose", "Bimbo", and "Goin' to Boston" on it.

The band on the record was really good, too,as I remember--very cool clarinet and guitar parts.

It is currently 6:30 PM 22 June 2012 and SOMETHING made me suddenly say to myself "Go on the internet and see if you can find "Willy the Spider" so you can listen to it". Well this thread is the only substantial reference I found and it's interesting to see how many persons have responded.

The bizarre thing is -- I only ever heard this song ONE SINGLE TIME. I did NOT have the record when I was a kid. Yet somehow that one hearing was enough to make a big impression on me I never forgot about it.

The latter fact and the many replies here indicate it must be a composition having qualities of a caliber beyond the norm ...

I heard it one single time on TV. And this was not when I was a little kid. This was later like maybe when I was in college in the early 1970s. I am also 61 years old and it's interesting to see that GUEST of 8 March 12 of my same age listened to it as a preschooler. If this is the case it must have been around some time before I heard it.

Yes that's the other question. Exactly when and where I heard it. Yes I think I was no longer a kid. I think it was likely on Captain Kangaroo I happened across one morning killing time. When did he go off the air ...?

I remember "Willy the Spider had too many shoes". I didn't remember "tripped on a lace" -- but did so whenI read it here above. The thing I liked most about the song was the rhythm -- a powerful three beat drum between verses. A great song. Maybe relatively hard core for a kid's song. Yes a quality piece of music!

So can anybody put it on YouTube?!

Enjoyed finding and reading this thread.

JT

I HAVE HAD THIS SONG IN MY HEAD FOR 50 SOME ODD YEARS AFTER SEEING IT REPEATEDLY ON CAPTAIN KANGAROO AS A CHILD. I JUST SANG THE CHORUS TO MY WIFE THIS MORNING WHICH WAS ALL I COULD RECALL OF IT. THAT AND THE FACT THAT WILLIE FELL DOWN THE STAIRS. I FOUND THIS POST AND WAS DELIGHTED TO READ THE COMPLETE LYRICS AS POSTED BY PEG. THANKS , SOMETIMES ITS THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE THAT MATTER.

This is such a treat. I have thought about those old Captain songs for many years. I'm almost 60 and watched every morning when a was little. It's great to have the lyrics, as I could only remember a few lines, and the thumping drumbeat when willy fell down the stairs. Thanks!
