I'm combing the table of contents here, but I can't seem to find anything about Rick's stellar opening night at Hugh's. He was great. His five piece band of country pickers was exciting. (Well, I'm sure they can play anything they set their minds and fingers to!) Several mudcatters showed up, and some of them played. Come on out and hear Rick and his guys on Mondays after the radio show at Hugh's Room at 2261 Dundas St., very near the Dundas subway station. See you there. Balladeer

Hey attendees, how about a full review of the performance?

I'd like to know the songs they did, instrumentation, costumes, makeup, etc.

cheers Chance

Ask Peter T about costumes and makeup. He was the one with the camera.

Well what have we here?

Yah, it was fun. No costumes, lotsa great guests (Sables Pirt and Stephenson, Darcy Wickham, Balladeer, Mose Scarlett, Jim Layeux) and repertoire wise, mostly older American country-folk, which I love.

Rick

I made it down to Hugh's Room last night expecting a wonderful evening of music. It's not often that reality exceeds your expectations, but last night was one of those nights.

Rick has assembled a tremendous band. These guys can flat out play. Guests included Chris Quinn (I'm burning my banjo), Mose Scarlett, Tim Harrison and a few guest vocalsts. As I said to Peter T., it was kind of like the Reader's Digest version of Mariposa or Summer Folk.

There was a good turnout of 'Catters. Tony Burns, Peter T., Little Neo and Heather were all in attendance.

Rick was saying that Monday's are just starting to get rolling. Folks, if last night was any indication this is really going to turn into something special.

Rick I understand they're going to get a new soundman at Hugh's Room. All the rock bands love him.............

Cute Wesley!! Nope Dave Lang does a fine job. Even when Chris, Greg Monk and I did TRIPLE BANJOS....Keerist what cacaphony!

Actually it's been fun to see a lot of the Ontario Mudcatters drop by. Flatop and Balladeer have been regulars and quite a few occasional Mudcat visitors. For me the most fun has been to pick and sing the "old time tunes" with some pretty skilled friends.

Rick

Rick,

Three five strings on one stage is a recipe for disaster, you guys pulled it off. Hell, they were even all in tune, call the Guinness people.

I loved your version "Little Maggie" and thanks for doing the request. My Uncle loved it.

Yep, we'll back.

The band is getting really good. It is hard to pick between wanting the band to just keep on driving, and the great guests. As I said to Steve, we are talking a 50 buck Massey Hall night every Monday. How long can it be before the crowds snake out the doors? (Toronto, well, a long time, but the thought is there....).

yours, Peter T.

My plan to be there on June 25 hit a snag but I'll be there come autumn. Hang in there guys... I'm coming.

We'll be a'waitin' for ya Mark.

You know, there are so many nice "folkie" venues in or near Toronto now (many having opened recently) it almost makes me think that a new "folk revival" may be happening.......oops, don't go there Richard! Lotsa good spots to play though and a pittance to be had by all. What more could we ask for?

Rick

The evening was wonderful! Rick's band was something to see. All amazing musicians I'd say and Chris Quinn is a remarkable banjo player.
I was thrilled to be there and share time with some Toronto Mudcatters. The french fries are 'To Die For' eh, Peter. Was Flattop there? I didn't see him.
Balladeer it was a pleasure to hear you sing. Did you know Balladeer has a new CD? Not sure what its called. I haven't heard it yet.
I do plan to come down on Monday nights and hang out at Hughs. Hope to see some of you guys there.
Mark, really looking forward to seeing you in Autumn.
It was great to see you Rick and Heather too.

Little Neo

Little Neo, the french fries are to die for or to die from?
