Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: Gallus Moll Date: 22 Jan 19 - 04:00 PM Linn Records has a set of 12 cds that have all of Burns songs peformed by various Scottish folk singers and groups, co-ordinated by Fred Freeman. The project was done fairly quickly so there are some flaws - also there is not an alphabetical index, you have to trawl through the small print on every sleeve to find the song you seek!! Jean Redpath sings on the Serge Hovey series Songs of Robert Burns. Sadly Serge died before the project was completed - think there are 7 cds? Check Greentrax Serge was an orchestral arranger so folkies have to see past that! However he had carefully researched all the tunes, came to Edinburgh, met and had help from Hamish Henderson, sought all the correct tunes as Burns had originally intended - so it is an invaluable resource. There are i think two song/tune books with some of the collection? |
Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: GUEST,JHW Date: 24 Jan 19 - 07:06 AM Gallus Moll - I had that index problem with my full set of the Linn Burns CDs so I got on to Linn and they sent me an index. I printed it and keep it near the box. Linn would probably send you the same if reqd or I probably have the file still somewhere. |

Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: Gallus Moll Date: 24 Jan 19 - 01:07 PM Thanks JHW and Dave....way back when the collection first came out(think tgey did a deal if you bought them all? Or naybe i already had 6 bought individually tgen a deal on last 6?)i contacted them to ask but at that time there was no alphabetical index. ( or do i was told) i considered doing one myself but ain't got around to it so -thanks for the info and link!!! |
Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Jan 19 - 03:09 PM I'm amazed how little known Burns is south of the border ( down England way). For example, they're advertising a "Burns Night" at my local Wetherspoons but nobody behind the bar knew who the hell he was( no, and they weren't all Polish! ) |
Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: GUEST,Dave D Date: 24 Jan 19 - 04:14 PM Burns and Shakespeare went into a Wetherspoons... "You're bard, and you're bard too" :) |
Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Jan 19 - 05:49 PM Wetherspoons S of the Border? Just an excuse to sell more whisky, but what do they have? How many decent single malts? And I remember doing a Burns concert for a group of elderly ladies somewhere not far from Edinburgh a few years back: lots of Burns songs and tunes. Afterwards they said "That was great: we had a Burns lunch the other week - got haggis, neeps and tatties, but no-one even mentioned Rabbie - not one poem, song or anything"! |
Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Jan 19 - 05:52 PM DaveD, amazingly, I am barred from one of my local Wetherspoons! Don't ask me why. |
Subject: RE: Burns Songs Site From: GUEST Date: 24 Jan 19 - 07:39 PM Tunesmith, I am so hoping the reason was Brexit-related. :) Fun fact: Burns was known as "the Bard" before Shakespeare. It was only after the Scots ennobled their poet with the title that our friends south of Tweed thought they's better catch that bus too. |
