Good one the Maori one...put me in mind of the Hawaiian war chant...it doesn't sound military...but it is an awesome tune. I heard a Hawaiian drumming group drum and chant it at 2000 Seattle Folk life...it was awesome....I'd put it in one of my 10 best tunes list....also a couple of years ago there was always on the radio this group of I believe Native American girls doing something that was to the tune of Gary Owen or perhaps another Irish common tune but I think Gary Owen..and it was also in Indian style. There are probably numerous Native American chants etc.

It would be helpful if we knew more about this project. One thing I would recommend is using stuff contemporary to whatever war you are describing. No matter how pretty or powerfula song I could write about the Civil War it just wouldn't be the same as someone who had experienced some aspect of it. mg

Thanks for the "Now is the Hour" plug Walrus - I've known and loved it for as long as I can remember, which is quite a while. There's an NZ website with words in Maori and English, which I can't find at the moment - my ISP's name-server has gone cranky.

Will get back ASAP

Sam - in NZ

Serch problems are resolved. Alas, I can't find the "Now is the Hour" site I was looking for. Best I can find for Maori/English lyrics is that of Jenny George - she also has a WAV of her singing it. Wish I could find the history of the song though. It was popularised during WWII by Bing Crosby, Gracie Fields et. al. I thought it was WWI in origin, but found it predates that too. Someone has sheet music from 1913 for sale...;)

Anyway, my best find was WT Paull Memoirs - There's a nice midi on that page of reminiscences of a US Marine in NZ in 1943. There's also a few verses of other WWII songs.

Howsomever....

Go to the homepage and work through the site. It's great - many references to the songs we know and love...;)

Cheers - Sam

Of couse what's appropriate may depend on the nature of the project and how authentic you want it to be . . WWI pieces are hardly appropriate to something about your civil war!

For a tune I'd suggest "Battle of the Somme" - which is said to be a folk composition from the trenches at that time, and works well as a march/processional. Well, we used it as such for an Hiroshima Day commemoration at Sidmouth one year.

George

I have a complete book of soldier songs, The Cruel Wars, by Karl Dallas. Would you like me to look there?

Uncle Jaque, can you point me to midis or somesuch, which give the difference between "Last Post" and "Taps" ...
BtB: Yes, actually; go to: Click here

Which came first?

1. Lorena in the US "Cyril" War
According to Silbur (below) date of publication was 1857, obviously a "Pre-ACW" piece. It was written by a Rev. H.D.L. Webster. I have several versions of it, including "The Songs of The Civil War" Compiled by Irwin Silber, Musical arrangements by Jerry Silverman; NY; Dover Publications, p. 134. "Lorena" is one of my favorites, and never fails to evoke a host of bittersweet memories.

2. When You and I were Young (Maggie)attrib Trad Irish?
I'm not quite sure when that one came about, but have it in at least one collection of "Minstrel" Songs, and am of the impression that it also predated 1861 by several years. It was written by George W. Johnson and J.A. Butterfeild, if that helps any.

Beth,

The Peat Bog Soldiers inthe DT is certainly mournful and might deliver the effect you are looking for.

It relates to the inmates of Hitler's concentration camps just before the war and reminds us that the inmates were "soldiers" fighting injustice & tyranny.

The tune can be found on Swan Arcade LP (LER 2032) - but probably long since deleted.
