Subject: Irish music in Vietnam From: Mike Byers Date: 09 Jun 01 - 08:18 AM The Social Weevils were at one time the only group that I knew of playing Irish music in Vietnam. They weren't Vietnamese, but were some people from different countries who ended up working and living in Hanoi. Now I hear there's a group called Whiskey in a Jar; all Vietnamese musicians who are playing around Ho Chi Minh City. The story I got is that they're pretty good, and have gotten some of their material from the internet. I'd love to find out more about Whiskey in a Jar, and would like to play some of their music on Purdue University's Public Radio station if I could somehow get either a tape or CD. Any Vietnamese Mudcatters out there? If anyone knows about this group or has a contact who might, please let me know either via this forum or e-mail to corvos@ravenglass.org People around the world do seem to like Irish music, don't they? Even here in the wilds of Indiana my band is playing Irish music for a wedding this afternoon. Thanks, Ireland! |

There are several really excellent Bluegrass bands from China ad Japan. If someone has this info for you, I'd still like to see it posted here if you would? Spaw |

I do have a copy of The Social Weevils only CD (recorded in the Vietnamese Army studios in Hanoi), but getting this was just luck--I had a friend coming to the US from Hanoi who carried it back for me. From what I've heard, sending and receiving stuff from Vietnam via the mail is a chancy business at best. |
