Much earlier is:

Logan-Water and Logan-braes-
I helped a bonnie lassie on wi' her claiths;
First wi' her stockings, and then wi' her shoon;
And she gave me the glaiks when a' was done.

But had I kend what I ken now,
I should have bang'd her belly fou,
Her belly fou, and her apron up;
And hae shew'd her the way to Logan-kirk.

There are a further three verses.  Mayne's song, set to the air Logan Water, was first printed in the Star newspaper in 1789.  Mayne himself edited the paper at one time; he died in 1836.

While for her love she thus did sigh,
She saw a sodger passing by-
Passing by wi' scarlet claes,
While sair she grat on Logan braes.
Says he, "What gars thee greet sae sair,
What fills thy heart sae fu' o' care?
Thae sporting lambs hae blythesome days,
An' playfu' skip on Logan braes."

"What can I do but weep and mourn?
I fear my lad will ne'er return-
Ne'er return to ease my waes,
Will ne'er come hame to Logan braes."
Wi' that he clasp'd her in his arms,
And said, "I'm free from war's alarms ;
I now hae conquer'd a' my faes,
We'll happy live on Logan braes."

Then straight to Logan kirk they went,
And join'd their hands wi' one consent-
Wi' one consent to end their days,
An' live in bliss on Logan braes.
An' now she sings,"Thae days are gane,
When I wi' grief did herd alane,
While my dear lad did fight his faes
Far, far frae me an' Logan braes."

From The Illustrated Book of Scottish Song, second edition, 1854.

I have a different version of Logan Water attributed to John Mayne, circa 1781 which would make him a contemporary of Burns.

LOGAN WATER

By Logan's streams that rin sae deep
Fu' aft wi' glee I've herded sheep
Herded sheep or gathered slaes
Wi' my dear lad on Logan braes.
But wae's my heart, thae days are gane
And fu' o' grief I herd my lane
While my dear lad maun face his faes
Far, far frae me and Logan braes.

Nae mare at Logan kirk, will he
Atween the preachin's, meet wi' me
Meet wi' me, or when it's mirk
Convoy me hame frae Logan kirk.
I weel may sing, thae days are gane
Frae kirk and fair I come alane;
While my dear lad maun face his faes
Far, far frae me and Logan braes.

At e'en, when hope amaist is gane
I daunder out or sit alane,
Sit alane beneath the tree
Where aft he kept his tryst wi' me.
O! could I see thae days again,
My lover skaithless, and my ain
Beloved by friends, and far frae faes
We'd live in bliss on Logan braes.

Does anyone have the lyrics to the english folksong Logan Water. It might be by Robert Burns?

Thanks,
