My 2 favorite chat rooms , Maestronet.com and Art Bell have either been dismantled or censored to death.

An administrator of Maestronet (a violin maker and dealer) did not appreciate my challenge to his $14,000 violins to my $500 violins. His objection led to my ejection.

You be the judge (sorry no mp3) but you can look at the most unusual folk and blues violins and cellos on earth. http://www.angelfire.com/md2/customviolins.

Ive only been here a few weeks myself,but have found all the people to be really nice.They are very helpful,especialy if you need to know about music or computers.I got told of one day for bad spelling(INTERESTING HOBBIES),but didnt let it get to me,I bought a little dictonary anyway.I think the main thing you get in to trouble for here is making a new thread that is non music and missing the BS thing off(this annoys the proper musicians because its harder for them to find things).Welcome to mudcat.john

I left Maestronet because of the stupid censorship; on Mudcat you can say anything you like, and you won't be cencored for "commercialism" either!! Welcome, welcome, welcome. You know I love your fiddles....maybe someday I can have you do one for me!

First thing its easy to be a member and there ain't no strings attached !!
I am not sure how advertising works here and I have put in links to lots of makers and shops that I have used
On a more important point the title of this thread will not let anyone find your violins in the future. I just searched for the word Violin (here) as someone looking for violin info might do in futute months. This one Violin Dealers came up, so you could add your details to that one. Or start a violin maker thread?
I have a feeling I am on thin ice with this...........

Be careful your justifiable pride in your work doesn't come off as spam. How are the people here? Fair question. Think of this place as buffet dinner. Some of the food on the the table you can't get enough of. Some of the offerings you know will take a grain or two of salt, others you can tolerate just as nature created them. Then there are some that you would never put on your plate because you know you don't like them. I would suggest sampling a bit of each and then decide how you like it.

We have a great time discussing many wonderful things and some not so wonderful things. Most are music related in some way but being the diverse community we are you will find non-music related subjects as well. Sit back and enjoy.

BTW, I did visit your site and am amazed at the talent in your work! Welcome to our community!

Donuel, many Mudcat members who have a music-related business work out something with Max so that business that comes their way via Mudcat benefits Mudcat in some small way. (See the box at the top of the Forum page with the banjo and jumping fish, "Help Support the Mudcat." Since it's an all-volunteer, ad-free place, it's always in need of support to keep doing what it does. I hope if you make Mudcat one of your homes you will consider this.

As far as the people here, you will have to see for yourself, of course, as we all have, but I would have to agree with what has been said so far. I would just add that folkies can be REALLY sensitive about feeling like anyone is trying to control them-- it's a highly-individualistic bunch, anarchistic, and somtimes outright iconclastic. I think most of us expect a degree of freedom here far above that we experience IRL... and we bristle when we feel it's not being enthusiastically appreciated and respected, even when no control is comtemplated.

We do have a few flamers from time to time, but I have heard that what wounds and grieves us most deeply in our Mudcat skirmishes is nothing compared to the usual Net experience. It's mere MudSlinging.

To see Mudcat at its best, I recommend outr FAQ thread-- top of the thread list. It is a marvel itself, and it has links to "Memorable Mudcat Threads" too. Or just reset the Age filter at the top of the thread list to the last year's threads, and browse-- you will see this community in action.

well!...I am surprised to learn that there is a luthier of that quality within 5 minutes drive of me!. I know a couple of people locally who might like to see these.

I would not call myself a luthier since I have no formal training at a luthiers school nor do I make from scratch or molds. I have been an artist and cellist longer (40 years) than the 4 years of studying instrument repair and modification.

Now how do I post a picture of myself with the rest of the members who have done so in Resources ???

When I come out with somthing that is amazing I will be posting individual links to a picture and not my site so it will not be the annoying equivelent of spam spam spam spam and eggs.

And now for something completely different...
A brief history: For the first 2 years of inventing my imaging and scroll work I gave away the instruments at cost , some as little as $70 , but they now start at $500 since I have far more acoustic control of a fiddles reponse. Some of the vintage violins were great and some were not but I prefer begining with a high quality Samual Shen violin at this time. It is not merely finished but "treated" as well . I am not fond of thick finishes for many reasons so people are surprised how a thin finish can have such depth. Meanwhile I will continue to learn some amazing techniques from the many forums now available while being subsidized by the few who want to own a most unique personalized violin. As far as Great Luthiers with vast width and breadth of restoration and making skills go in my DC area - there are a handful . But I am not one of them. Right now I am the Erik Satie of creative violin 'making' (where no one has gone before) in that I would hope Salvadore Dali would have loved to own one and Issak Stern might love to play :-)

Pray silence for the reverand Van Dross?
While I am making a fool of myself, does anyone know about Mopane? I only recently realised that the Blackwood that my flute is made from is endangered. So my next one might be made from Mopane, anyone know if it makes good instruments?

Listen, I'm gonna be savin up my pennies, and designing a violin in the meantime. Now, it may be a little while, understand, but if I can dream it and you can make it... well... the possibilities are endless. :-)
