Subject: SEARCHING MUDCAT

OK, I know, the thread title leads you to a lot of funny stuff-- but please keep that down, this is SERIOUS stuff.

I want to be able to link newcomers to this thread for a list of the skills that a newcomer to Mudcat will want to develop first. I hope it will draw newcomers to use the FAQ thread more often, because that's where all we will list here is explained, as to HOW to do it. (So let's not rewrite the FAQ, here!)

I am purposely NOT putting in links to any of the features I am listing, because the point is to encourage people to LOOK AROUND and click everything that can be clicked to see where it leads! (The links ARE in the FAQ, though, so people can go there for a more guided tour when they are ready to explore in depth.)

I think the first skill I would want someone to be able to use would be using Mudcat search features well to discover all the stuff that is ALREADY HERE. There are search features within various pages, too. These would include:

Digitrad and Forum Search (on the Main Forum page)
Search the Forum (in Quicklinks on the Main Forum page and does a very important job)
Search Links (in the LINKS pages)
Searches at Mudcat Store (in the Support Mudcat pages)
Filtering by keyword, prefix, and thread age (on the Main Forum page)
Searching by Membername for previous posts by that member (in posts)

I am sure there are other searches I've forgotten! What do YOU think is most important, and where is it?

~Susan

The most important thing for newcomers is the <br&bt; tag for linebreaks!

hesperis,

You mean the one most of us cannot type correctly (instructionally) without it becoming invisible HTML code generating an actual line break?

The one that would look like this:

*<*b*r*>*

... if only the asterisks were deleted and the spaces tightened up?

The one in the FAQ thread where even more HTML Cool Stuff is? (plug plug)

~Susan

Ah, DUH! I forgot I can use View/Source to see how she did that!

*G*

There's a key technique for ya-- using View/Source to view (and copy into an HTML template file to re-use) someone else's technique!

How about SEARCH ENGINES for songs-- what's the best one right now?
