Subject: RE: Lyr. req. WINGS by Artisan (England) From: mike at user@cas.softnet.co.uk Date: 04 Oct 98 - 05:56 AM I've looked and I don't have that track. You might try contacting Artisan Direct they are really nice people. You can contact them at :- ARTISAN@ARTIFACT.DEMON.CO.UK or go to their web page at :- WWW.ARTIFACT.DEMON.CO.UK A lot depends on why you want the words, for personal reasons (in which case they will tell you which CD it's on, and offer to sell it to you mail order). Or for performance in which case they will discuss a fee. I hoe this is of some use to you. mike |

Subject: RE: Lyr. req. WINGS by Artisan (England) From: skw@ to keev Date: 08 Oct 98 - 06:33 AM Pleasure! I've been collecting song lyrics and backgrounds to songs for ages, particularly Scottish and English ones, mainly by soloists, so if there's anything else you're looking for maybe I can help. As I've got them in the database all I have to do is to add a little HTML. (However, I managed to crash my computer last night ...) - Susanne |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHAT'S THE USE OF WINGS? (B Bedford)^^ From: Mbo Date: 26 Apr 00 - 01:38 PM What's The Use of Wings? "I could have been a giant" said the bonsai tree "But someone bound my roots and held me down." "I could have reached the Heavens" said the snowy owl "But they clipped my wings and kept me on the ground." "I think I heard them tell me that they loved me That they'd care for me--without them I would die But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them? What's the use of wings if you can't fly?" "I could have been a singer" said the Myna bird "But they caged me and told me what to say." "I could have run forever" said the pony "But they bridled me and made me go their way." "I think I heard them tell me that they loved me That they'd care for me forever so it seems What's the use of voices without freedom? What's the use of living other's dreams?" Why do people cage the things they love the most? Is it simply that they fear to be alone? If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile If it leaves you, it was never yours to own "I could have found adventure" said the angelfish "Now my world's so small there's nowhere left to go." "I could have ruled a kingdom" said the lion "Now this land inside my head is all I know." "I think I heard them tell me that they loved me That they'd care for me, and tell me it's alright But what's the use of life without adventure? What's the use of strength if you can't fight?" Why do people cage the things they love the most? Is it simply that they fear to be alone? If you give your love its freedom, it will stay awhile If it leaves you, it was never yours to own "I know I heard them tell me that they loved me That they'd care for me, without them I would die But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them? What's the use of wings if you can't fly?" ^^ This is from the album "Other Roads" by the John Wright Band. --Mbo |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: What's The Use of Wings? From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 26 Apr 00 - 06:02 PM I wasn't even aware of the other recordings. I only know it as an Artisan song (Hilary Spencer singing lead and Jacey and Brian Bedford adding their superb harmonies). Brian sure do write some fine songs. Vin Garbutt, you say? Gotta track that one down. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: What's The Use of Wings? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 27 Apr 00 - 09:38 PM This is a wonderful song, which had swept through the British folk scene like wildfire before I came to the States. Funnily enough I haven't heard it sung over here. Do any Mudcatters do it as part of their set? Also nice to see the John Wright Band getting a mention there, Mbo. Their CD is great but live they are phenomenal. Murray |

Subject: Chords Add: WHAT'S THE USE OF WINGS (Brian Bedford From: Matt_R Date: 11 Jun 01 - 10:50 AM Damn, the chorus chords should go like this (HTML ARG!)
....G.........................A.....................D |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Murray MacLeod Date: 11 Jun 01 - 08:40 PM Matt, the tune as I have heard it requires a Em in the second line rather than a Bm Also in the chorus, I would throw in a Bm after the D at the end of the first line before going up to G. Great song, deserves to be better known. The author's name is "Brian" Bedford incidentally, although for all I know he may be known as "Bob" to his friends. Murray

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Matt_R Date: 11 Jun 01 - 08:48 PM The Em works, but you can get a neat sound by replacing the Bm's with D/B's. I tried the Bm in the chorus, but it doesn't seem to work. You must remember that I figured these chords out for myself, 3 years ago, after hearing the version by The John Wright Band. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Murray MacLeod Date: 11 Jun 01 - 08:56 PM I've tried the Bm too and on second thoughts I agree it doesn't work. Better to do an ascending bass run (E, F#,G) on the bass E string. Murray |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Matt_R Date: 11 Jun 01 - 09:01 PM There! I like that much better. John Wright, at the end of the song, does the last line G A G, then uses the G-F#-E bass run and ends on D. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Murray MacLeod Date: 11 Jun 01 - 09:08 PM I have just had a rummage through my CD's and Vin Garbutt's version appears to be the only one I possess. I think I left my John Wright Band CD in Scotland. Doesn't he do a cracking version of Andy M Stewart's "Queen of all Argyll" as well? Murray |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Matt_R Date: 11 Jun 01 - 09:13 PM I'm not sure...all I have by him is "What's The Use of Wings" and Si Kahn's "What You Do With What You Got". |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Murray MacLeod Date: 11 Jun 01 - 09:19 PM Ah, you need to try to get the CD. I am not sure what he is up to at present , I know that whatssisname who played guitar in the band left for a solo career. They were a dynamite live band , I hope he makes it over to the States one day. Murray |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 11 Jun 01 - 10:35 PM Jeez, not a mention of the group. Brian Bedford (no relation to the actor so far as I know) is the prime songwriter as well as being 1/3 of the English a capella group "Artisan". I've not been familiar with the other recordings mentioned, so it's nice to see; I'll keep an eye out for them. Artisan often tours on this side of the pond, and I know they'll be in southern Ontario next winter (the White Oak Folk Club in Oakville, Ontario on Feb 9 for sure). A long wait, to be sure, but well worth it! |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: shankmac Date: 12 Jun 01 - 05:01 AM John Wright Band are still playing together but they are also doing some solo stuff. They have said that they will split after booking committments in Feb 2002. John has just returned from his first short visit to the east coast of U.S.A. which went very well. He toured with a very good Irish singer/song writer, Maurice Dickson. I am sure John will be planning another tour in the States in the future. I will let you know if and when he does. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Whats the use of wings From: A Wandering Minstrel Date: 12 Jun 01 - 10:09 AM Thanks for all this. I will give it a try tonight on the new ax. I stand corrected re "Brian", my once perfect memory is now blown away by too much beer and chorus-singing :) only query left is what is the sequence for the "bridge" section?
Why do people cage the things they love the most? Actually my transpose down to G/Em/Am/D was pretty close |
