Subject: Horslips - The Tain From: GUEST,Mike Ireland Date: 11 Jun 01 - 11:07 AM Hi I'm after the ABC or musical notes for a tune on an old Horslips album called 'The Tain'. Would anyone out there be able to help? Mike |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Les from Hull Date: 11 Jun 01 - 11:12 AM Which tune did you want? The Tain is the name of the album. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: IanC Date: 11 Jun 01 - 11:16 AM Sorry, can't find the notes, but here's a site with a lot of info. They seem to have used traditional tunes for the 3 instrumental sections so, if yours is one of them, you could look up the tune on one of the Tunefinder sites.
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Noreen Date: 11 Jun 01 - 12:05 PM Yes, more details of what you want please, Mike. The Táin, and Book of Invasions, have been re-released on CD. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Les from Hull Date: 11 Jun 01 - 12:49 PM Actually, Noreen, this is one of my all-time favourite albums. I had to buy a second copy of the vinyl 'cos I wore the first one out, then when the second wore out I bought the CD. These CDs were released without the permission of the Horslips lads, so I should buy the thing again to get the decent version. That'll be four times that I've bought it. Is this a record? (pun intended). Here's the official Horslips site Les |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Noreen Date: 11 Jun 01 - 01:40 PM Same here, Les... :0) Didn't know about the CD being unapproved though- and I only have the one LP and one CD. You win! Noreen |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Mountain Dog Date: 11 Jun 01 - 04:25 PM Thanks to Mike for the reminder and to Les for the link. Had the good fortune to see Horslips live in Lawrence, Kansas on the "Aliens" tour and a splendid evening it was. Book of Invasions and Aliens were both in my LP collection at one time, but have long since been spirited away. Good to know I can replace'em with CDs.
Thanks again! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Matt_R Date: 11 Jun 01 - 04:25 PM I have both The Tain and The Book of Invasions, thanks to Micca. Definately 2 of my very favorite albums ever, in fact, they are in the car now, waiting to be played. Personally, I like The Book of Invasions better. The whole section with "Warm Sweet Breath of Love," the rockin' "My Lagan Love," and "King of Morning, Queen of Day," which always remind me of me and my girlfriend. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Matt_R Date: 11 Jun 01 - 04:28 PM Oh yes, BTW...the traditional tunes used as backdrops in The Tain cannot be found on any tunesites...I know, I've searched for 2 years. EXCEPT of course, for the ubiquitous "The Silver Spear" which is very easy to find. In fact, you can get it here! --Matt |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Jun 01 - 08:03 PM The only tune named in the sleevenotes that can't be found through J C's Tunefinder is O'Neill's Cavalry(/Cavalcade). You do have to look for the Kings of Laois, though. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Matt_R Date: 11 Jun 01 - 08:34 PM O' Neill's Cavalry is now in JC's?? I've searched there tons of times and never seen it! I think I sense more updates to JC's! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Jun 01 - 08:46 PM Updated constantly, I think, but Cavalry is the only one that can't be found there at the moment; there's also no mention of it at The Fiddler's Companion or James Stewart's Tune Index, so it must be pretty obscure. March of the kings of Laois can be found at JC, but not without the "s" on "kings"; I should have made it more clear that I was talking about two different tunes. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Noreen Date: 11 Jun 01 - 08:55 PM No, Mattie- read it again... that's the only one that isn't in JCs. :0) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Noreen Date: 11 Jun 01 - 09:54 PM (Sorry for rubbing it in) Les's link is to the Official Horslips Merchandise, CD's and Vinyl Collectables site. Try this one for the Official Horslips Web Site

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Sorcha Date: 11 Jun 01 - 10:47 PM Well, after all that Mike better come back!! Lotsa help there, and most of the album. Good on ya, kids. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: alison Date: 12 Jun 01 - 01:05 AM he's probably asleep.... its the middle of the night in Carrickfergus... *grin* slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: GUEST,Mike Ireland Date: 12 Jun 01 - 06:24 AM Hi All - oh and even to you Alison - you know we never sleep in Carrickfergus ;-) tooo many sessions. Boy I didn't expect to get so many answers so quickly. I was at a session recently and one whistler played a tune that I vaguely remembered. I asked what it was and he said it was called 'The Tain'. I did a bit of hunting yesterday after I had posted to Mudcat and I found The Tain LP (a long playing record to all you young ones out there). All I have to do now is find a record player...... So as Sorcha said -Lotsa help there, and most of the album. Good on ya, kids. JC's about to take a hammering. Ta Mike ps Alison Do you remember Charlie the person who owned the Coast Road Hotel (he supplied the free drink and brought out the sandwiches). Well he sold the Coast Road Hotel and bought the Drumnagreagh Hotel further up the Antrim Coast. He wants us to move - we might.

I think a friend of mine had a reception there....... send them all my love Mike.... I was thinking about that session the other day...... must dig out the video.. . *grin* slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: Geoff the Duck Date: 06 Sep 01 - 08:55 PM We called in at the Whitby shop during folk week - well worth a visit. Charles O'Connor is a really nice bloke. The band were a big influence on me - the music still is. It is nice when you meet a legend and he is a real person who you like! Geoff! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Horslips - The Tain From: GUEST,SarahC Date: 07 Sep 01 - 02:53 AM The re-releases on CD of the Horslips stuff is now with their permission. Charles O'Connor was redesigning the sleeve covers for CD a few months ago when I visited.
