This is a repost.I originally posted this request in October 2000 and I received over 30 reponses to this thread and I followed all info but to no avail.A Rev Harp (Standing Bear)said he had the lyrics and would send them and I contacted him several times by email but I never received anything.Joe Offer gave me the web site of the Lance Music and I did purchase a tape with Take Me Back To Calvary on it but it is not the right song.So I am again leaning on the Mudcatters and Guests and hoping with my fingers crossed that someone will come up with the correct Lyrics. The words I remember are as follows

Take me back to Calvary
Let me tarry there
Where Jesus knelt and prayed for me
All because he cared

The next verse started like this
I will stand beside the tomb

All help appreciated and thanks for your time Louie Roy

Sorry

I've taken some trouble to find this on the online hymnals and using every search engine known to man (though perhaps not to woman??). Can't find what you want.

Do you know which tradition it's from? I'm not too hot on some of the evangelical hymns.

Cheers!
Ian

Louie Roy, first, please bookmark this thread so you will be able to bring it back up easily whenever you want to renew your request. Threads don't go away... your old one is still in here somewhere and it's best to stick to one thread per song when you can. I have seen years-old requests brought back with a new post and an answer found. In fact I got one that way myself just last month, that had taken only a year, but it was worth the wait.

What kind of song was it? I mean, in terms of style? Could it have been a bluegrass thing, or an older Appalachian thing? Or is it old church music, and if so what denomination was your mom? The more you can tell us, the better we can look. Do you remember the melody too?

~Susan

Louie Roy, I went back to your older threads and another clue you gave was this: I was raised in Idaho and that is where I heard the Hymn and my mother used to sing it. She came from West Virginia.

Since you said you followed up on all the leads in the old threads, I don't think it makes sense to go back to them, unless someone searching wants to see the ground that has been covered, and they can find those just by clicking on your name to pull up your old posts, like I did.

I MAY have a lead on Rev. Harp and I will see what I can do, but don't expect much, OK? I don't have a good feeling about that one.

~Susan

LR-- Here's another clue to help us look, from an older thread, where you wrote I was told that Connie Smith done this on one of her Gospel Concerts. Does any one have a web page with a list of her songs?

Was that one of the leads that you followed, but not the right song, or is that one that still might help?

To wysiwyg and to all the other Mudcatters that took the time to answer and give good advice yes I did go through all of the songs that connie smith had posted on a web page I believe Spaw gave me but I didn't find it there. This little chore took about three weeks in my spare time.I firmly believe that this song is true gospel and I also think it came out of the hills of WV.My mother was born in Job WV in 1897.Thanks all of you and I'll keep hoping. Hi, Louie - I think you've started four or five threads on this one song, and that splits the discussion up so much that it's confusing. Please use this thread for any further discussion. You can resurrect it by putting "calvary" in the filter and setting the age back to 3 years. The filter is a very easy way to find old threads. Play around with it a bit until you know how to use it. There are search instructions in the FAQ/Newcomers Guide. I think that anybody who is a "regular" here should have read at least the first ten messsages in the FAQ. I worked hard on it, and I think it's a pretty good guide for finding your way around.
Thanks.

LR, I did send a message to the person who formerly used the name Standing Bear here. His membership under that name is inactive now, but he does have another active one and I left him a message in the PMs there as well. He is not at Mudcat often but I am still hoping to locate him via e-mail.

If you know the melody and can get it to me somehow, I would be glad to write you some new verses to hold you till the ones you want come "home" to you. I could write them without the melody, but it would be better to have a sense of the feeling of it. Is it slow, fast, waltz, 4/4? You know, most of the old ones that were passed around by ear had lots of versions and verses, and people often made them up as they sang. So I think if you want to claim this song as yours and carry it forward, with new verses, it would be fine. Just think, you might be singing it someday, somewhere, and have someone come up to you who knows it well from long ago.

They tell the story on the Gaither Homecoming Hour how the author of NEVER GROW OLD turned up in the assembly all incognito at an all-day singing, and his old friend onstage was singing the song he'd sung for years. It had been so long since they last saw each other that the singer did not even recognize the author when he came onstage to sing it with him.

So I hope you WILL sing this, everywhere you can, and tell people what it meant to you, and how you connected through it to people all over the world by asking about it so persistently.

There is one more way to keep track of this thread, by the way. Look right at the bottom of the thread, by the box where you put your new post, where it says "ADD THREAD TO TRACER." Click it. That will automatically put a link to the thread on your personal page and you can always just click it back to life from there, or see if someone has posted a new post to it and maybe even found your song.

Do you think anyone from your mother's time and place would still be around to help you recall this song?

~Susan

WYSIWYG,As I remember I wold say this Gospel tune would be in waltz time.I also apologize to all the Mudcatters for being such a pest, but I still believe that someone somewhere in this great country that we live in also heard the tune when they were growing up in the 1920s and 1930s.Susan,my email is roy1@wanweb.net and if you will contact me I'll put the tune on tape and send to you. Again all who have helped Thanks a lot Louie Roy

Here is my version, in draft form, for comment and improvement. I think that with this many verses, also, the chorus melody would need to be a little different so it isn't purely repetitious of the verse tune. (I can do that in Noteworthy.)

~S~

TAKE ME BACK TO CALVARY
Traditional
(Edited and additional verses by Susan O. Hinton)

Take me back to Calvary,
Let me tarry there
Where Jesus gave His life for us,
A mansion to prepare.
Take me right beside the tomb
To pray to God above.
I'll ask forgiveness of my sins
And for His precious love.

CHO:
I know that Jesus is my friend:
He gave His life for me!
So I shall worship Him in love
For all eternity.

Take me first to Bethlehem
Where he was born a man,
And angels sang to welcome Him
Across the starry span.
Take me to the temple, too
Where He proclaimed the Word;
And let my speech be always true
And righteousness be heard.

Take me to the wedding feast
But let me be the bride;
I want to know my Jesus will be
Always by my side.
Take me to the table laid
With everything that's good;
Beneath His banner made of love,
Just as He's said we could.

Take me to the lonely place
Where Satan tried His heart
And give me Jesus' heart to own
Whenever fear may start.
Take me to Gethsemane,
Let me join Him there;
Where Jesus knelt and prayed for me
All because He cared.

Take me to the Galilee
Where stormy waves went still;
And with His peace I know my soul
Will surely ever fill.
Take me to the blessed mount
Where preached God's only Son,
And let my life forever be
A mirror of that One.

Take me to Jerusalem
Along the way of palms,
Where He fulfilled the prophets' words,
The promise of the Psalms.
Yes take me back to Calvary,
Let me tarry there
Where Jesus gave His life for us,
A mansion to prepare.

LR/SH

Hey, I think I may have it.

Anyhow, as I said above I may have a hopefull on this.
A friend of mine called me to see if I knew this song. She says she heard someone did it at a cookout this summer and thought maybe it was me. It was not me but I was there last year and did some singing
so I'm familiar with some of the folks who may have attended this year. I have not heard this song.

I have made a couple of contacts but nothing yet.
I will keep you posted (if this message works out) as to what I can find. Would be glad to send a tape, cd etc. if I can find one.
If not, maybe I can get the tune and work it up myself on the guitar.

Susan, are the lyrics you supplied to this song the original lyrics?
Thanks for sharing and thanks to all for your effort with this issue.

I remain
Leon Farthing (Kentucky)

Leon,

My posted lyric above falls between housefire (PTSD) and a coupla little strokes (memory loss). I THINK Louie sent me what he had and I "extended" it and edited it for him, to create a whole-length song, but I have no recall of the tune, whether he sang it and sent a tape, or just a scrap of paper, or whatever.

??? Maybe he recalls, if you PM him-- sorry.

I'd sure love to hear it though; it looks like a song we'd enjoy doing in our Sat. Nite service-- the format in which I posted it leads me to think I might have been planning to sing it, but I have no idea now which of the verses I even "wrote," because they often just come to me.

~Susan

Susan, Thanks for your response.

Hey Louie Roy, are you out there?

Please check the latest information above. I talked just a little while ago with the man who sang this song at the cookout mentioned
above and he says he has the song on disc somewhere and is checking to see if he can find it. If so, he will get me a copy and I can send to you and possibly one of our mudcat friends can do an mp3
for the others. Hopefully this is what you are looking for.
Will keep you posted.

Thanks,
Leon

Hey all,
I am still working on this. It seems the man cannot find the song on disc and does not have a means of recording. I have invited him to my place to record but we have not been able to get together. I saw him last week and mentioned it. He says he has not forgotten me and will call but nothing yet. I will continue to push this.
Sorry for the delay but I was quite sure we had it. If I can somehow get the words and music I think I can work it out.
Don't give up on it yet!!!!

Hey Louie Roy, or anyone?
Are you still out there? I haven not forgotten this one. I thought we had nailed it but the man in the above story has not responded, so I am looking at other possibilities.
I inquired about this with another friend of mine and he sent me info that he found on You Tube. I do not think this is what you are looking for but take a look and let me know. The You Tube info is on LEAD ME TO CALVARY not TAKE ME BACK TO CALVARY. Just curious, sometimes I think the titles get changed. I tried to attach the videos but it did not work.
Just go to You Tube (find you tube videos)and type in LEAD ME BACK TO CALVARY.
I remain,
