Have any books been written exclusively on slide guitar (aka bottlneck guitar or knife guitar)? Not instruction books, but books on its history and about great slide players?

Also, I've found several CD compilations of slide guitar recordings. I'd like to know what others' favorites are.

In my mind, the definitive slide guitar recording, at least from the blues/gospel tradition, is "Jesus Make up my Dying Bed" by the Reverend Blind Willie Johnson. The control he has over his instrument - it blows me away. Great synchopation also. A word of caution, though - his voice is not for the faint of heart.

I think I've seen it on a compilation CD but I "obtained" it from the radio - a show by a guy who collected 78's.

There's a good compilation in Columbia's Roots n' Blues series called "The Slide Guitar, Bottles, Kives and Steel." It has cuts by Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Charlie Patton, Son House, Leadbelly Robert Johnson, Bukka White, and my favorite slide player Tampa Red.

Checkout Malahat Mountain Music, you'll locate it under dobro, for a selction of contemporary slide players, including Ken Hamm on a National. You also might want to check out David Essig, a Canadian who is a great slide player.

Richard
