I just now found a site I wanted to share with you called Singers of Yesterday Some of the women pictured there were among those who helped to make songs like "Home Sweet Home" and "Comin' Thro the Rye" more famous. A few of the others were partly responsible for furthering American interest in opera.

Cool! I love those old "gibson girl" type photos. I was particularly amused by the woman who "in private life" was the wife of so-and-so. Didn't she acknowledge him in public?

Alex

That was a treat. It happens that I have a copy of Heartsongs, and it does contain some treasures.

One I particularly enjoyed finding was the original music to "Three Fishers", which is quite different from the melody that Garnet Rogers wrote. (He had come across it as a poem and had no idea that it existed in any way as a song form.) And I privately much prefer Garnet's adaptation.

What a coincidence - just as I opened this thread, I was singing Comin' Thro the Rye, in preparation for a performance on Tuesday about songs made popular for parlor singing. Thanks for the link.

Alice

I have heard Three Fishers done for many years and always with the same tune as I heard sStan Rogers use on "For the Family". I also have Heartsongs but as I can't read music aand no one I know has volunteered to play it for me I have no idea that there are different versions.

Is there a significant difference?

Don

Significant? There's not a ghost of a resemblance! :-)

At the risk of adding to thread creep, I will add that the "Three Fishers" melody in Heart Songs is the one used by Joan Baez, who recorded the song on one of her early LPs. (She changed a couple of notes, but we all do that).

Paul MacCartney, I think, sang this.
