Aside from the music community, what do you enjoy about Mudcat's structure, design, and features? All of it is so easy to use. I like being able to trace and the ability to find old threads by date or title. Digitrad is a great help. The people are great. I get lots of great tips for guitar playing here. I would love to find a site this fantastic on country music. Glenda

I like the ability to quote and threading can certainly be useful where sub-topics crop up - with this system it is more likely IMO for a thread to wander completely off topic and never return. The downside with the threaded systems seems to be that it doesn't take too "sub threads" before things start dissapearing way off to the right of the screen. I did once ask whether the choice of threaded or linear formats did have any impact on the feel of the forum as I felt the threaded one is likely to encorage shorter to the point answers to points raised and the linear one was more likely to encourage more of a sort of free for all type conversation but I can't remember anyone voicing an opinion on this. The archive of songs is very nice, and I find this forum much more entertaining & informative that rec.music.folk. However, in contrast with others on this thread, I find the interface with this forum clunky in the extreme. I wish it were a Usenet newsgroup so I could read it & post to it in a civilized manner using a threaded newsreader. If it were, e.g., I would have been able to read in the questionnaire & answer it point by point, instead of noting the questions with a pencil in order to avoid mousing my way back & forth from here to the top. Perhaps, however, there are some amenities I am ignorant of. |

This is the easiest site I know of in terms of moving around the site, responding to messages, searching, etc. Thanks! I'd like to note that at present, I don't have a computer at home and can only use the one at work on lunch and breaks. Otherwise, I'd be on the site more and also write in more often. I often print out topics to read at home. I do check this site almost every workday, and it's always helpful and interesting. |

I wanted to say to all you 'catters who make music for a living - I envy and admire you, being very musical myself. I just never had the "bottle" to make a go of it. That's why I don't usually PM. I feel a bit like an "outsider" amonst you. Anyway, I'm hooked on Mudcat. Incidentally, anybody know of any Celtic musical groups in the Alexandria, VA area that would welcome a good singer with above average keyboard talent?

I find myself wishing for this simple interface when I am at other message boards, and especially when reading newsgroups with text-based newsreaders! Being able to PM is also important, as it helps to get to know people privately as well as publicly, which brings me back more often. The only things I'd change would be to have the option to go back to the thread you posted from when posting instead of to the main listing, auto-formatting of links, and adding a link next to each poster's name on a thread to send them a PM. (Right now, the poster's name links to a search on that name, I would prefer to be able to PM straight from a thread, rather than going through a few pages and forgetting how to spell the name in the meantime.) ~*hesperis*~

And I am continually blown away by the incredible amount of knowledge, popular and arcane, that is encompassed on this site. And the willingness to share it.... Most often here 6 to 8 a.m., around 4p.m., or between 10pm and midnight, EST, depending on what my schedule is that day. I frequently consult the DT for lyrics, and I enjoy reading and posting about music when I feel I can be of help. I enjoy the BS postings about families, relationships, health concerns of various members and their loved ones. I really like postings about upcoming festivals and concerts, like the recent Webcast of Waterson/Carthy. (Thanks!) I don't think you can really call what I do multitasking. It's more like I'm doing homework or something and get bored or distracted and come here to see what's going on. Very habit-forming. Plus I feel like I know some of you and enjoy the social aspect of the Mudcat. Sharon |

I can't help but feel that there is grant money available to maintain Mudcat and the Digital Tradition and help it to become even more than it has been. Funding sources in the U.S. might include the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), The Smithsonian Institution, The Library of Congress or one of the major universities with strong folk music departments. Who knows? maybe the U.N. has money considering the international nature of the site. The cost of maintaing Mudcat may be a lot for a small business to handle but in the larger world sense it's very innexpensive to maintain. A quarter million a year or so is a mere pittance to the big funding organizations. The right sort of pitch would have to be put together but there seem to be enough experienced intellectuals hanging about here to get the job done. - Mark
