Hi folks

I thought this might be fun. i was in a cheese shop where they had a cheese called Lincolnshire Poacher and I started to think about songs that have cheese in the title or in the lyrix and that it'd be fun to start a list of cheese songs. Right off the bat I thought of Les Barkers' "Hard Cheese of Old England" (of course!), "Here's to Cheshire, Here's to Cheese"(trad,Pete Seeger), "Butter and Cheese and All"(trad, Sam Larner), the "the cheese stands alone" verse to Farmer in the Dell(trad,Micheal Cooney), and a music-hally sort of thing I can only vaguly remember about "when the gorganzola cheese went wrong"(or some such). Let's see how a long a list we can make! Whenever possible, please indicate author or, if traditional, a singer associated with the song ( as I have done above) so that if people aren't familiar with a song you post they'll have a clue where to find it. Thank you.

A second list could be of musical cheese puns: "What A Freind We Have in Cheeses" and "Am I Bleu" for starters. Have fun!

Great idea, Ed, but you've completely exhausted my list of cheese songs, and then some. I hope some of the other 'Catters have some cheese songs!

No wait -- does it have to be folk/trad? Jimmy Buffet has "Cheeseburger in Paradise"!

There's the "Anti-Chantey", aka "The Cheese Song", by Dave Stone. It's on his Cd, The Journey.

The song lyrics are at The Anti-Chantey.

Check it out. It's a chantey rhythm. Get the CD. The cheese shop should love it.

According to AMG - The All Music Guide:

On John McCutcheon's 1983 album "Howjadoo," "Here's to Cheshire" is credited to somebody named "Howell."

On Pete Seeger's 1994 album "For Kids and Just Plain Folks," "Here's to Cheshire, Here's to Cheese..." is credited to somebody named Haworth.

Either way, it is apparently NOT traditional.

By the way, I entered "cheese" into the DigiTrad Lyrics Search and came up with 67 hits.

Here's to Cheshire, here's to Cheese was written by Leslie Howarth of Edisberry, Fruit Farm, Edisberry Cheshire. I think Leslie was a founder member of Manley Morrismen, his son Colin played flute with The Border Band and song at Jones's Ale ( no relation) singers club in Chester. Inevitablt the Spinnres sang it a lot

Even if it is known who wrote "Here's to Cheshire, Here's to Cheese", I would count it as traditional in that it is a variant of "Froggie Went a-Courting", which (IIRC) was already in print in the 17th century.

Hey Joe, If the cheesemakers in Cheddar were to market a cheese and call it Wisconsin Cheese there would be an uproar from the kind folks of Wisconsin. But they have no problem in marketing a cheese which they call Cheddar? *Tee Hee* - Gotcha Joe.

Actually, my dictionary says Cheddar cheese was originally made in Cheddar in Somerset in England. That must have been before they started eating brie, eh?

I've been exiled in California for 25 years, kind of like Napoleon in Corsica, I think. They make something here they call Wisconsin cheese. Yuck.

Just been shipped to the States for a bit. I wouldn't mind, except I've not yet found anywhere that sells proper cheese. On a scale of 1 to 5 on Cheddar maturity, I've not yet found anything that rates more than a 2, and that only barely. Does no-one here know what this stuff's supposed to taste like?!

As for a good chunk of Grandma Singleton's Tasty Lancashire, fergeddit - that's hard enough to find in England!

Grab/Graham, you moved to the wrong side of the US. New England and New York have wonderful stinky cheeses. I remember when my family traveled, we'd make a point of going to a "country" store and buying a chunk cut off a huge wheel. Stuff smelled like socks you've worn for a month without washing, but it tasted great. Now there's Vermont Cheddar and New York Cheddar. I don't know why they kept "Cheddar" in the name. After all, even Cheddar cheese started as something else.

Double Gloucester...I love the stuff, but a tiny piece probably contains the cholesterol content of complete cow.

I lose the stuff in my refrigerator. Does that count as aging? I have new cheese and hairy cheese. I'm going to go shave myself a hunk right now...

Where in the States are you Grab? and for how long?

The nearest you'll find to a good Cheddar is a New York Extra Strong White Cheddar.

Choose a pack that looks as though it's been on the shelf for a while and you might get lucky. Occasionally the silly sods over here sell it off cheap when it gets old, so look in the bargain, specials or discount sections of several stores. I saw a couple of dozen packs like that once, going for half price. I bought the lot.

I was just guessing at where Grab was. Could be he just hasn't found the good places to look yet.

If you see cheese in plastic labeled "Cabot's" and called something like "Hunter's Cheddar," it's the best pre-packaged cheese I've ever tasted. Has a wide tartan stripe on it. (The package, not the cheese.)

Detroit. Maybe I just need to do a bit more asking around, or look in a Yellow Pages (is there a section heading for "Cheese shops"? or for "shops that sell foods not constructed by ICI"? or even for "shops that sell food that's reasonably natural and tasty"?) I thought about asking local ppl. Then I realised most of them are used to this plastic food. :-)

I can live with mild cheese though. What's harder to deal with is the lack of proper bread. Wholemeal bread simply doesn't seem to exist, it's all just varieties of white - and artificial cotton-wool white bread at that, not the fresh kind you'd get in France. The closest I've got is a small loaf of granary bread in Meijer (for non-Brits, that's brown non-wholemeal bread with grains) which was going to set me back $2.50 for about a 1lb loaf!

Any advice on places to start looking for _proper_ food? :-) Even the health-food shops don't seem too well-stocked...

Nothing will ever better the Monty Python Cheese shop sketch, and I defy anyone to get Dorset Blue Vinney into a song and find a rhyme for vinney (a corruption of veiny -refers to the blue veins as in Stilton but using unpasteurised milk and a different strain of bacteria).

I haven't lived in Detroit area for more than twenty years, but used to go to the Eastern Market-where there were several good bakeries, and a variety of specialty shops--my father went to the poultry shop and came back with a duck that lived in our garage for a while--

When I first moved up here to the boondocks, I was delighted to find a cheese and wine shop, advertising imports no less, so I toddled over to it to see if they had any Stilton. They did; I grabbed it up and went to the checkout, where I stood behind a couple who were insisting that the mold (mould on imports) be cut off the chunk they were buying. I was speechless (well, I was young then...). No, no, this is the horrible part: the clerk offered with great sincerety to cut the mold off my Stilton, too!

I knew I'd landed in the wastelands, then...

Unless you're lucky enough to find a good baker, then the nearest thing you'll get to bread is San Francisco Sourdough. We just make our own, then we can make it just how we like it.

LOL Sarah. We went into a store in Huntsville Alabama looking for some Romano. All they had was Made in USA. So I asked if they had any imported Romano. The girl said "This is Imported" I replied "It says here, Made in USA". She comes back with "Well we get it from Atlanta". I don't know how we managed to contain our laughter until we got outside the store.
