There is a great songwriting opportunity in San Francisco, open to submissions from all sources, with priority given to California songwriters. A sail education organization, Sail San Francisco, is organizing what will be a tremendous event in 2002 - an international parade of tall ships, with events surrounding the visit happening from August 28 - September 2, 2002. The tall ships visit is designed to promote and provide education under sail for youth between ages 15 - 25 and to foster international goodwill and friendship.

One of Sail San Francisco's major goals and the highlight of the event is to have a commissioned song presented by a San Francisco choir and members of ships crews from the participating tall ships, singing refrains in multiple languages. Plans are underway to have the performance of this song televised.

If your song is chosen, it, and your name, will be included in press releases to local and national media, the song will be performed at city hall and recorded, you will be a guest at all receptions and sponsored events, will have the opportunity to meet members of the diplomatic community, tall ships crews, and local and international visitors, and will receive an honorarium of $500.

This is a non-profit event, with many people volunteering their efforts to see this happen. The director of this event had successfully organized the 1998 international tall ships parade in San Francisco, which was a huge success, and I can tell you that judging from that one, this one will be an amazing experience for all involved in its presentation and for the large numbers of the public that are expected to take part.

The winning entry song will be the highlight of the event, performed by a San Francisco choir and members of international ships crews, singing the refrain in multiple languages (you need not write the song in different languages - it will be translated!).

If you are interested in submitting a song, please contact the director, Alison Healy, with any suggestions and deadlines you might have, at: (415) 447-9822. Please contact her by this July 15.

Thanks for the news, CR!! I am sorely tempted -- I haven't written a good sea-song since "Away the Mudcat!!!" came over the air over a year ago.

I'll chew on it awhile.

I passed on the information to people like Dave Stone, Vince Morash and Dan McKinnon who are great song-writers who deal well with the sea and ships.
