It doesn't take much provocation for people to post lyrics for this one, and they've been doing it on and off for several years under the blissful misapprehension that it was something new.  Cooksey wrote his song based on an urban legend that was already old; Gerard Hoffnung had recorded a famous monologue some years earlier, telling exactly the same story:  HERE

There are so many examples already in the Forum that it isn't worth listing them.

Thanks Jon,
Having read a current thread on spooks I thought I was experiencing an online spitit.

But back to the song - you will notice that the DT version has 7 verses but Cooksey wrote and sings 9. The clicky link below takes you straight to Pat's original lyrics.
Frank Author, Pat Cooksey's version.

Frank, after I posted, I noticed your post which was pointing to the same thread. It seemed to me that the sensible thing to do was fix your link and delete my post (which was only a link to the same thread) - sorry to cause confusion.

Hi, Tamara - I added the three-winged birdie with the reduntant wing to your lyrics, to show that we already have a version very similar to yours in the Digital Tradition, although it's labeled "Excuse Note." I found it by searching for "go the bloody rope" - titles are deceptive. It's no horrible mistake to post something we already have - I goof and do it often.
Thanks, anyhow.

Dear Tamara,
The Sick Note was written by a good old friend, Pat Cooksey. Below you will find a link to a pervious thread with lyrics straight from the mouth of the author.
Best regards,

Subject: Lyr Add: WHY PADDY'S NOT AT WORK TODAY^^^
From: GUEST,Tamara

I've been searching in here for the lyrics of 'The Sick Note' a few days ago, but the lyrics i found were quite different from what i remembered. I have now found the version i know and therefore would like to add it.

So here we go:

The Sick Note (by The Dubliners)

Dear Sir I write this note to you to tell ye of me plight, for at this time of writing I am not a pretty sight, me body is all black and blue me face a deathly grey, and I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work today.

While working on the fourteenth floor some bricks i had to clear, now to throw them down from such a height t'was not a good idea, the foreman wasn't very pleased he being an awkward sod, he said I had to cart them down the ladders in me hod.

Now clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow, so I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below, but in me haste to do the job I was too blind to see, that a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me.

So when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead, and clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead, well I shot up like a rocket 'til to my dismay I found, that half way up I met the bloody barrel coming down.

Well the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped, and when I reached the top I banged the pulley with me head, well I clung on tight though numbed with shock from this almighty blow, and the barrel spilled out half the bricks fourteen floors below.

Now when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor, I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more, still clinging tightly to the rope I sped towards the ground, and I landed on the broken bricks that were all scattered around.

Well I lay there groaning on the ground I thought I'd passed the worst, when the barrel hit the pulley wheel and then the bottom burst, while a shower of bricks rained down on me I hadn't got a hope, as I lay there moaning on the ground I let go the bloody rope.

The barrel then being heavier it started down once more, and landed right across me as I lay upon the floor, well it broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say, that I hope you understand why Paddy's not at work today.

Cheers Tamara
