Subject: How do you spell...

Hi, folks!

My husband recently repaired an instrument its owner called a "tambouritza" (sp?) I would like to list this among his other repairs on our website, but I'd like to spell it right. I didn't find it on the 'net anywhere when I used Metacrawler... even with several different spellings.

Anyone familiar with this instrument, or the word, even?

Many thanks.

picture of a tambouritza (I'd be surprised if that was the only possible spelling)

I tried different spellings with 'All the web all the time' and the winner was:

tamboritza

with tambouritza a close second

and tambourtsa and tamboritsa trailing far behind

Wolfgang

There is a perfoming arts group called the Duquesne Tamburitzans based at Duquesne University here in Pittsburgh. They perform music and dance from a variety of European ethnic backgrounds, in traditional costume with traditional instruments. They are a perennial favorite amongst the local folk scene here.

Hi Mimsey,

the correct spelling in Serbo-Croatian is: "tamburica" in Latin fonts; if written in Cyrillic fonts, the scientific transliteration is the same. Since in most West European the letter C- is pronounced as a K- before -a, -o and -u, it is transscribed as -ts and -tz according to the preferences of writing in the intaking language. The -OU- is clearly French, because the letter U is pronounced like Ü (U-Umlaut, a sound special to German, Scandinavian languages, and Turkish). "Tambourtsa" and "tambor-" which Wolfgang gives also seem to me like misspellings with letter omitted due to hurry or misunderstanding.

Enjoy the sound! Wilfried
