However, it's pretty hard to find non-macho whaling songs. The sensitive ones never found much favour in the first place I guess...(except I guess "Farewell to Tarwathie" which I quite like. Modern Country music That about covers it. I used to be sick of EF and other Lightfoot, but I don't hear him much in Georgia. Oh yeah the Macerana, I still don't get that. And amateur country songs about dead relatives where they say cheesy things like "goodbye daddy" in a quavering voice at the end. And CB Radio songs. I used to be so sick of "Bat out of Hell" and Saturday Night Fever and Frampton Freeking comes alive! NO I DON"T FEEL LIKE YOU DO! Chris Gaines... Phew! That cheesy Coke Jingle that Barry Manilow wrote. Buy the world a coke. I'll buy you a Coke you idiot! MacDonalds commercials and the music therin! The overly dramatic music when someone wins a thousand dollars on Millionaire! The theme from "Friends". That didn't exactly stand the test of time! I guess there are a few things. Cheers Rob |

"A Place in the Choir" (All God's Critters) (a lot of songs are 'ok' if not overdone to death...but some are unbearable about ½ way thru the 2nd hearing. This applies to a maddening little thing by Sally Rogers..."Circle of the Sun", which starts out with a bouncy little tune and and interesting metaphor, and quickly nosedives into a vapid, sing-songy, repetitive, poorly constructed, badly timed mish-mash of wannabe clichés.)....(oh, I don't like it, either) |

Subject: RE: BS: Songs that everyone likes but you From: KingBrilliant Date: 28 Jun 01 - 08:44 AM I really can't stand anything by The Beatles. Until I hear them done well by someone else - then I like them, but actually performed by The Beatles ....eurghhhh. Some friends of mine are very keen on Nowhere Man, and I had to really really grit my teeth to sing that one with them. Its strange, because I will admit its a nice song to sing, but I just can't bear to hear it. When my sister's friends came over from Japan, this was one of a relatively few English songs he was really confident on (he's a brilliant performer, but does mostly his own [very good]songs). So we did Nowhere Man loads of times - and he pretty much rehabilitated it for me. Kris |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs that everyone likes but you From: Whistle Stop Date: 28 Jun 01 - 08:03 AM Positively Fourth Street. I'm a big admirer of Bob Dylan, and this one is from the time when his creative powers were at their peak. But I find the lyrics uninspired, with none of the wit that Dylan is known for, and the music is maddeningly redundant. |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs that everyone likes but you From: Joe_F Date: 27 Jun 01 - 06:33 PM "Puff, the Magic Dragon" is rescued from cloyingness, for me, by the subversive line "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys", which identifies growing up with death. However, there is one song, popular in circles I have frequented, that I find to be so utterly bad that I will retreat to the kitchen rather than sing it: "Harriet Tubman". |

Subject: RE: BS: Songs that everyone likes but you From: RangerSteve Date: 27 Jun 01 - 06:02 PM I'm glad someone mentioned The Unicorn in the beginning of this thread. How about Tie Me Kangaroo Down? For a couple of years at Boy Scout camp that one was sung to death. The Edmond Fitzgerald wouldn't be a bad song if there was a bridge in the melody, but there isn't, and it just goes on and on and on and on for all 100 (it seems) verses. Will the Circle be Unbroken is morbid. All blue grass songs about dead mothers are morbid. All old-time country songs about dying children, (Little Joe, Little Bessie, etc) where the kids get philosophical about death should be illegal. Dueling Banjos and Foggy Mt. Breakdown are ok tunes, but no great. Just because they were featured in movies doesn't mean every banjo player loves them. Mostly, we hate them, so stop asking me (or any other banjo player) to play them. |

I also know that I'm guilty as anyone of elitism (or niche-ism as I like to call it). However ... here's some of my list of no-nos (all of which could conceivably be heard at some folky gathering ... don't get me started on other genres!). There are others that make me want to leave the room puking and howling, but I can't think of them at the moment. Fields of Athenry Ride On Boys From The County Armagh Danny Boy Alice (where did that re-emerge from?) My Lagan Love Star of the County Down Sweet Sixteen, I Will Love You, etc. as sung by Finbar Furey when he decided to disown his outstanding talent on the pipes and trade it for an opportunity to croon dirges Scorn Not His Simplicity (Sorry ... there are people who swear blind that this is insightful and enlightening. Nah ... doesn't do it for me. I get a buzz out of Luke's voice. But I could probably listen to Luke singing Old MacDonald and get a buzz.) Subject: RE: BS: Songs that everyone likes but you From: Snuffy Date: 26 Jun 01 - 06:10 PM Bill, Wild Rover will fit into both categories - as far as most folkies are concerned it's a definite no-no, and as far as the great British public is concerned, it is the ONLY folk song there is. I wouldn't dare sing it at a folkie gathering (but I did sing Wild Roving No More at Alcester this weekend), but we don't half belt it out with the morris men if we get a song session going in a pub. |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs that everyone likes but you From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 26 Jun 01 - 05:35 PM When I was young and fresh and innocent, singing folksongs in the early 50s, I sang Streets of Laredo a lot. And it was requested a lot. I think I'd rather cut my throat than sing Streets of Laredo today. Just too, too, too, too much exposure, I suppose. Also, among people of a certain age range, it's too durn well known. I like to sing something that's relatively fresh, that's going to make its impression based on _MY_ rendition. For the same reason (though less vehemently) I avoid This Land is My Land and some others. Dave Oesterreich |

Maybe you don't hate it outright (or maybe you do!) -- but it just doesn't seem worth the hooplah that seems to attend it?
