New Age Whaler, a non-macho whaling song

I'm a New Age Whaler
the sensitive type
I don't go in for that macho tripe
When I kill a humpback,
bitter tears I wipe
But I kill 'em any way hey hey
Yeah I butcher 'em any way

Dolphin safe is
my favorite food
I'm a caring, passionate kind of dude
But Walking through town
by greenpeace I'm booed
But I kill 'em any way hey hey
'cause I butcher 'em any way

How willl you make it on your own?

Geez it's fun to read the rantings of bitter old folkies late at night when I'm chained to the help-desk.

I might say "how dare you" to this or that selection, but what the hell. However, it's pretty hard to find non-macho whaling songs. The sensitive ones never found much favour in the first place I guess...(except I guess "Farewell to Tarwathie" which I quite like.

Farewell my darling
I must go harpoon and gut whales in the arctic
But I'll really miss you
And how.

Da teme from Titanic,
Alamis when she whines
Bob Dylan when he sings
Bolton when he pines

Denver when he's singing
Another boring Lyric
Yankavic ain't funny
He ain't even satiric

Heavy metal bands when
They try to do a love song
Southern rock band
When they jam for too long

Modern Country music
Which all sounds the same
Manufactured Boy bands
Are drivin me insane

That about covers it. I used to be sick of EF and other Lightfoot, but I don't hear him much in Georgia. Oh yeah the Macerana, I still don't get that. And amateur country songs about dead relatives where they say cheesy things like "goodbye daddy" in a quavering voice at the end. And CB Radio songs. I used to be so sick of "Bat out of Hell" and Saturday Night Fever and Frampton Freeking comes alive! NO I DON"T FEEL LIKE YOU DO! Chris Gaines... Phew! That cheesy Coke Jingle that Barry Manilow wrote. Buy the world a coke. I'll buy you a Coke you idiot! MacDonalds commercials and the music therin! The overly dramatic music when someone wins a thousand dollars on Millionaire! The theme from "Friends". That didn't exactly stand the test of time!

I guess there are a few things.

Cheers

Rob

"Lovely Agnes" makes me cringe when I hear the line, "We'll cross over Lake Michigan 'til we come to the shore." What else would you do? Stop in the middle? And it puts that stupid line in the chorus, for Pete's sake, where you have to hear it over and over.

I knew of a bluegrass band in the 70s that solved the problem thisaway: They had signs up in clubs they played saying something like "Orange Blossom Special - $20, Foggy Mtn. Breakdown - $30, Rocky Top - $50" It worked and I bet the pain of performing these was lessened. It would be for me!

"The cruel war is raging, and Johnny has to fight ..." and all its drippy ilk. "One Tin Soldier"! The person who wrote that should be shit on and arrested for stinking. "Willie McBride", which is both mawkish and long, a poisonous combination. "The Dutchman", especially when sung by someone who trying to be sensitive. And not only "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", but also "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" (flatulent) and "Pussywillows, Cat-tails" (twee).

Songs that I don't really care about that everyone else seems to like:
  • White Christmas by Bing Crosby
  • Most anything done by Bing Crosby, on second thought
  • at the risk of being un-American, the Star Spangled Banner--It's too hard to sing, and no one knows ALL the words
  • Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney
  • Free As a Bird by John Lennon
That's enough to get some one on my case.

well, LOTS of those noted above..Kilkelly and "Puff" and others...but so far not mentioned:

"A Place in the Choir" (All God's Critters)
"Will My Soul Pass Thru the Southland" (The Rebel Soldier)
"Lovely Agnes"..my wearyness with this was so well known, that at a sing one time, a woman said she was going to sing the song, but first she had to 'protect' someone....and she got up, walked over, and handed me a pair of ear plugs...*grin*

(a lot of songs are 'ok' if not overdone to death...but some are unbearable about ½ way thru the 2nd hearing. This applies to a maddening little thing by Sally Rogers..."Circle of the Sun", which starts out with a bouncy little tune and and interesting metaphor, and quickly nosedives into a vapid, sing-songy, repetitive, poorly constructed, badly timed mish-mash of wannabe clichés.)....(oh, I don't like it, either)

I really can't stand anything by The Beatles. Until I hear them done well by someone else - then I like them, but actually performed by The Beatles ....eurghhhh.
Some friends of mine are very keen on Nowhere Man, and I had to really really grit my teeth to sing that one with them. Its strange, because I will admit its a nice song to sing, but I just can't bear to hear it.
When my sister's friends came over from Japan, this was one of a relatively few English songs he was really confident on (he's a brilliant performer, but does mostly his own [very good]songs). So we did Nowhere Man loads of times - and he pretty much rehabilitated it for me.

Positively Fourth Street. I'm a big admirer of Bob Dylan, and this one is from the time when his creative powers were at their peak. But I find the lyrics uninspired, with none of the wit that Dylan is known for, and the music is maddeningly redundant.

"Puff, the Magic Dragon" is rescued from cloyingness, for me, by the subversive line "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys", which identifies growing up with death.

However, there is one song, popular in circles I have frequented, that I find to be so utterly bad that I will retreat to the kitchen rather than sing it: "Harriet Tubman".

EF would be better if the two halves of a verse were more dissimilar. It's the same 8 note descending scale, over and over and over and over and over and over and -- AUGH!

I'm glad someone mentioned The Unicorn in the beginning of this thread. How about Tie Me Kangaroo Down? For a couple of years at Boy Scout camp that one was sung to death. The Edmond Fitzgerald wouldn't be a bad song if there was a bridge in the melody, but there isn't, and it just goes on and on and on and on for all 100 (it seems) verses. Will the Circle be Unbroken is morbid. All blue grass songs about dead mothers are morbid. All old-time country songs about dying children, (Little Joe, Little Bessie, etc) where the kids get philosophical about death should be illegal. Dueling Banjos and Foggy Mt. Breakdown are ok tunes, but no great. Just because they were featured in movies doesn't mean every banjo player loves them. Mostly, we hate them, so stop asking me (or any other banjo player) to play them.

Garth Brooks' "Ireland." Geeze, what a load of crap! Dixie Chicks' "Fly" and "Goodbye Earl." ALL music represented in commercials and most on television...except Austin City Limits.

Tim O'Brien singing about Ireland is a completely different experience.

And actually, I love those crappy traditional songs like "Wild Rover," 'cause the audience ALWAYS sings with, claps, dances, and has a wonderful time. Makes performing a more communal experience.

Deni's comment is quite enlightening, I think! I know that there are songs I've been over-exposed to. I also know that I'm guilty as anyone of elitism (or niche-ism as I like to call it).

However ... here's some of my list of no-nos (all of which could conceivably be heard at some folky gathering ... don't get me started on other genres!). There are others that make me want to leave the room puking and howling, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Fields of Athenry Ride On Boys From The County Armagh Danny Boy Alice (where did that re-emerge from?) My Lagan Love Star of the County Down Sweet Sixteen, I Will Love You, etc. as sung by Finbar Furey when he decided to disown his outstanding talent on the pipes and trade it for an opportunity to croon dirges Scorn Not His Simplicity (Sorry ... there are people who swear blind that this is insightful and enlightening. Nah ... doesn't do it for me. I get a buzz out of Luke's voice. But I could probably listen to Luke singing Old MacDonald and get a buzz.) The Town I Love So Well A Woman's Heart Song For Ireland

I'll stop now. Gotta listen to Paddy Tunney or Len Graham to clear my head.

Pay The Reckoning

Bill, Wild Rover will fit into both categories - as far as most folkies are concerned it's a definite no-no, and as far as the great British public is concerned, it is the ONLY folk song there is.

I wouldn't dare sing it at a folkie gathering (but I did sing Wild Roving No More at Alcester this weekend), but we don't half belt it out with the morris men if we get a song session going in a pub.

When I was young and fresh and innocent, singing folksongs in the early 50s, I sang Streets of Laredo a lot. And it was requested a lot.

I think I'd rather cut my throat than sing Streets of Laredo today. Just too, too, too, too much exposure, I suppose.

Also, among people of a certain age range, it's too durn well known. I like to sing something that's relatively fresh, that's going to make its impression based on _MY_ rendition. For the same reason (though less vehemently) I avoid This Land is My Land and some others.

Well, there's lots of stuff I don't care for that they play over and over on various radio stations, but the list is just too long. Perhaps that's why you couldn't come up with any examples in your initial post ?

Well, gnu, according to my initial post, you don't have to hate it, you just have to wonder what others see in it.

I'd count virtually anything by The Who in that category, too.

Count as a song I hate? EF sure does count!

Blech!

ya want to hear a GOOD song on that theme, listen to James Keelaghan's "Captain Torres"... now THAT'S a shipwreck song!

Add to my list most of that 80's pop-crap that's resurging these days!! Urlp!

Had me half fisted about Barrett's Privateers for a minute minute there. Among my Irish Trad friends, none. I guess you'd really have to hate a song to post it here. So EF wouldn't really count, NOW WOULD IT ??!!

I'm not a big fan of the Wreck of the E.F. either. Lousy melody IMHO.

The Unicorn
There Were Roses
My Grandfathers Clock
7 Drunken Nights!!!
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

And well, I have to admit to being pretty damn sick of Barrettes Privateers too... but that's over-exposure...

Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses. I really don't care about Charlie's gold watch.

This is meant to sort of be a rejoinder to "songs that no one likes but you."

Are there songs that seem to be universally acclaimed, everyone loves them, they're absolute classics, but you just don't see what all the shouting is about? Maybe you don't hate it outright (or maybe you do!) -- but it just doesn't seem worth the hooplah that seems to attend it?

And now that I ask, my brain has done a complete funk on me, and refuses to cough up any examples. But I'm sure ya'll will think up some!
