I pulled out my copy of Holdstock & MacCloud's "Deepwater Shanties" and transcribed the melody to Mars Forevermore. It's a bit similar to Roll, Alabama, Roll in a couple of spots but is definitely not the same melody.

I can convert the ABC notation into a MIDI file tonight to go to the Mudcat files. In the meantime, here is the ABC notation. I do have it converted to a GIF. Anyone who wants a copy can e-mail me (I'm on the Mudcat e-mail list).

Thanks to all. For those who might be interested, Johnny Collins will be touring in Canada from 19 July to 8 August 2001. I've only heard this one on Holdstock & MacLeod's Deepwater Shanties (notes are brief). I've checked various A.L. Llloyd recordings and his book Folk Song in England with no success.

Well, well, well. Sing a song and folks come out of the woodwork to talk about it. This is very cool. BTW-that was the first time I had pubically sang that particular ditty, trying it out for future performances, so I am glad that you all liked it. I will be on the main stage at the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest in the Artist Showcase and I thought "Roll Agamemnon Roll" would be a perfect rouser for all those folks.

I got the song from one of my ex-bandmates who got the song off of a Holstock/MacCleod recording. This skalawag I used to sing with asked Dick where he got the song and that is where the Lloyd/MacColl source came from.I never really got the exact chorus and the DT finally provided it to me. Makes a lot more sense now than it ever did before.

Is it worth mentioning that "Agamemnon" was one of the three ships<1> which disgraced themselves at the Battle of Copenhagen (1801) by running aground in the "Middle Ground" before the battle (despite the boats from the fleet sounding a channel over night).

Johnny Collins does a great version of Mars Forever More on his 'Best of the early years' CD. It's also on his 'The Travellers Rest' album, which is a tape only release. Both are available from the Chantey Cabin.

I have Dick & Allen's tape Deepwater Shanties & it's on that. The Mars & Agamemnon were at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 along with Nelson who commanded the Flagship of the fleet, the Victory. This is according to the note on the jacket. They do not list any any credits forr the song it's self. Barry

Further to my last post, I looked up Holdstock and MacLeod's "Deepwater Shanties" on the Chantey Cabin website since someone on last years thread had said it was on that album. However, the song does not does not appear on Deepwater Shanties or on any of the other recordings that are listed for sail on that site. Can anyone provide the title and publisher of a recording that has Roll Agamemnon Roll on it?

The Mars was at Trafalgar, the Agamemnon was not. The song is discussed in detail HERE The song was on the DT twice, once as "Mars Forevermore," but the second one seems to have been removed. It's really Dick Holdstock's song (as Lloyd seems to be no longer with us), and he probably has recorded it. I still think it goes "Oh Agamemnons so," "Agamemnons" being the crew of a ship Nelson commanded. It's really about Trafalgar, not about the ships.

That was Deb C that sang it. It's tune is altogther different than Roll Alamba Roll. It of the battle of 1805 & the Brittish ships sung about here are the Mars & the Agamemnon. There is an existing thread somewhere back a ways that has alot more info on this. Both Deb & myself got this version from Holstock & MaCloud. Barry

I think you can sing "Roll Agamemnon Roll" to the tune of "Roll Alabama Roll", but the tune I heard at the session is quite different. I had thought "Agamemnon" might have preceded "Alabama" so I was surprised to hear that it was actually a contemporary song. It certainly has the feel of an old sea song.

At one of the late night singing sessions at the Old Songs Festival a woman sang a stunning version of a song I had heard of, but never actually heard before, "Roll Agamemnon Roll". I met her the next day and she told me it was written by Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd. Unfortunately, I didn't think to ask what recording it appears on. I have the lyrics, but I need to hear the tune again to get it fixed in my mind. Can anybody help?
