Me and the family are going to St David's in Pemprokeshire for a week form 19th to 26th August. Is there any music / singing going on in that area? A few years ago I went up to a session at Rosebush on Preselli, that was wonderfull. The beer was excellent too, but just too far to drive.

Thanks,

John

If you're at all interested in choral music, you would do well to check on music programs at St. David's Cathedral during your stay. My wife and I stumbled upon the cathedral choir's practice hour early one summer's eve while wandering through the close and sat transfixed by the haunting celestial tones that poured forth into the stone-walled courtyard where we listened. Our only regret was that we were unable to hear the choir in full voice in the cathedral's nave the following day.

There were also several informal folk sessions at a number of pubs in nearby Carmarthenshire when we visited last year; surely you'll find similar venues in Pembrokeshire just by poking around.

Good luck!

I link to www.folkwales.org from my site
cresby.com for the Mid West of England

if I typed the URL wrong it is right from my site.
I also link to Hugh's site in Denbigh but his site only gives you one club at a time but - hey - happy surfing.

Thanks folks! The only session I sort of found last time was at a pub at Mathry, a nice pub with nice people, but no music / singing. Re: The Cathedral, yes the singing (and the building) is something else......but I prefer a session!

Please keep the suggestions coming or I'll have to sing to myself on my own (the family will have nowt to do with me when I get musical).

Thanks again,

John

You could try asking the TIC
but don't hold yer breath
I give TIC's printed lists in my area and the next time I go in they insist there are none & no one tells them.
They don't bat an eyelid when I persist and they finally give in and find the non-existent paper.
I do not exaggerate!!

TICs, although there are ecceptions, seem not be aware of folk type attractions (unless it's a festival). All I'm trying to find is where, if any, the folk clubs are and where, if any, the sessions are. I suppose unless the TIC are constantly told of any such venues, and also provided with loads of printed material, they wouldn't promote a venue. Sessions don't really get organised enough to provide printed material, and if they were that organised, it's probably not the sort of session I'd like. I think the mudcat will come up with something, I hope so! Thanks,

John

That's Meic Steven's home county, so there just has to be some sessions in the area.Try Solva, it's not far from St. Davids and somewhere in the vicinity is Maxie Cole,a fine singer /guitarist, if my memory of 30 odd years ago serves me well. I do know he's still around. I think John Cale comes from near there too.

I think there are sessions (or musical events of some sort) at the Druidstone Hotel, Broadhaven. They might know what else is about.

Broadhaven is a wonderful pebbley beach just about 5 miles from St David's. (there is also Littlehaven beach nerby which is sandy). Follow signs for RAF Brawdy and you get there. Enjoy !

John J
Lets us know if you find anything when you are there.
Folkwales, Taplas and Mairi Arts are one and the same site.

Will do Mr Red (and thanks Lyndi-loo & Sian). About 7-8 years ago I went to a pub at Mathry where there was supposed to be a gathering of musicians, but the cupboard was bare when I got there. The only other music I found was in a pub in Rosebush on Preselli. That was really good, although it was around 5-6 years ago and things change. I came across dancers & musicians at Cardigan once, but that's too far really. I'm sure there is music and singing in the area, it's just finding it. Others must find the same problem too.

It's a real problem trying to find sessions in an area you're unfamiliar with, particularly when you're only there for a week AND the non-folk kids are in tow!
