You'll have an easier time finding it if you have the right info.. It's Polk Salad Annie and the singer was Tony Joe White. I don't know about things like downloads but it'll probably be easier to find with this.

Here ya go, Jeep Man. This is kind of a 'funky' midi file, but it will give you an idea of the bass line at least. Let it play all the way through, though. And you do know that 'PSA' was a kinda 'talkin' blues' number, don't you? Well, click here and see what you think.

I just had to answer you David. You stand in need of correction. Poke salad is a dish most favored in the South. I hae eaten it many times. The tender new leaves of the Poke plant are cooked with onions, scrambled eggs and lots of other stuff. Very Good. Jeep

Thanks Aine, you are right. Now I remember that bass.

And yes, I am in and from the South. Jeep

Hey Jeep Man,

Not knowin' what part of the South you hail from, I'm just hopin' that you consider Texas a 'southern' state ;-) I've eatin' my share of poke salad out of my mamaw's Victory Garden in Louisiana (Pineville - just outside of Alexandria), which grew next to the railroad tracks that my papaw drove a train on for almost half a century.

Mamaw used to cook up her poke salad with red onions and bacon, and we always had 'em with ham and mashed potatoes, or dirty rice and cornbread. Every time I heard 'Poke Salad Annie', it always put a smile on my face!

It's real good to hear from another Southerner!

All the best, Áine

Well, then Jeep, Tony Joe(or his record company) spelled it wrong, not me. According to The Billboard book of Top 40 Hits, The All Music Book of Hit Singles, CDNOW.com and Amazon.com it's Polk. And if I'm lyin', may a gator get my granny.

Dear davidg,

They must've spelled it that way 'cuz they're Yankees ;-)

I went searching on the 'Net and I found this great link, with a description of Pokeweed, the lyrics and the same midi file for the song, AND a recipe for POKE SALAD.

And FYI - Where I come from, 'Polk' is pronounced the same as 'Poke' . . .

All the best, Áine

As suggested by Davidg, a search for Polk Salad Annie would yield a few results. here is one site with lyrics, mp3 and MIDI.

Jon (who just searched Google for "Salad Annie")

Just always remember---the berries and grown up plants are poisonous.........only the shoots (baby plants) can be eaten. Polk is poke in southern Kansas, too. And it always sems to be "Poke-a" not "pol-a" (the dance/tune)

Is PokeMon relevant here......??? Sorry, I didn't think so.

Now dang it -- I don't care how ya'll spell it up north of the Red River; here are some bona fides for Poke Salad:

Poke Salad and Eggs

Poke Salad Lasagna

Poke Salat

Poke Salad Seed Kit

Scientific Stuff 'bout Poke Salad

A story from the East Texas Historical Society 'bout Poke Salad

Alternative Herb Info 'bout Poke Salad

So there ;-), Áine

Yeah, yeah, yeah, 'Spaw -- I did my 'Cat (re)search and found that old thread -- but, it sounded like a bunch a Yankees fartin' in the breeze and I was downwind . . . ;-)

But, it's good to see you checkin' up on things around here again! Especially on songs about plants that give you the runs if you don't know how to cook 'em (or pronounce 'em, for that matter).

Not being American and having no concern regarding what sounds like regional spelling differences, I would suggest that the song is now reffered to as "Phytolacca Americana Annie"

I lived in the NW Ark. woods for many years and picked, ate, and put up, a LOT of what was called in those parts, Poke Sallet. Picked young it was as good as spinach. Have always liked the song, especially the spoken line, preferably in a deep and sarcastic voice...."....said he had a bad back..."

I know they're hard to find, but Tony Joe White did several outstanding LPs. Brook Benton certainly did a great reading of "Rainy Night in Georgia" but the original sure has it's charm too. TJW did some cool harp playing by the way.
