Hi! - I'm a MudcatThreadVirgin, but here goes : Does anyone have the lyrics of the following old Gospel numbers : This Song of Love (middle georgia singing convention #1) / Happy On the Way (fa sol la singers)/ If the Light Has Gone Out of Your Soul (Ernest Phipps and His Holiness Singers) / I Know That Jesus Set Me Free (the same Ernest)/ Don't Make It Too Late (Mrs L. Reed & Mrs TA Duncans) / There's a Beautiful City Called Heaven (Virginia Dandies) :- the recordings I have are very hard to decipher!! Also, if anyone knows of a link to the music scores for the first two shape-note songs, I'd be grateful (S-N hymnals are almost unheard of, here DownUnder!!) And while I'm at it - what about the lyrics of (I Found A) Hiding Place (Carl Story / Johnson Mtn Boys)??? - those boys sing too fast for my ears and my hand!!! Cheers.

I recently picked up a CD with This Song of Love & listened to a short cut of Happy on the Way at CD now.

Both of these sound like 7 shape Gospel songs. Even though Happy on the Way says fa sol la singers, it is not in The Sacred Harp.

The first pass through the music is singing the notes. If you can hear people singing re's and do's you know you have 7 shape. I don't know a good source for this stuff in print, much less online. Conventions like the Middle Georgia one recorded would put out a new book every year that contained a mix of favorites along with new songs. The number of these books published prior to 1940's is almost unlimited.

Do you have recordings of all of these? If so I have a way of transcribing them from tape.... if you can pull off copies, I will not only transcribe, I'll put the copies in the Gospel Tape Lending Library.

(And learn about half of the taped material to use in our weekly service.)

Rich Joy- is "on the Shining Way to the Land of Light" a direct quote? [you said "sort of thing"] I found a "Happy All the Way" with the ending phrase "With the Savior at my side, I'm always fully satisfied, I am happy, yes, happy all the way." So many gospel song titles are take offs on other titles......

I have a tremendous need to some way catalog what I do have. Getting books is not a problem- knowing where to find a specific song is. I'm thinking about scanning the indices of the books that have them, and keeping that close by the computer. But what about books that don't have an index/TofC? Any ideas out there?

And as for finding books, get thee to an antique mall! [I share this only because I know I can't possibly get to them all! I bought 4-5 on the way to MLAG, and the neat thing is, that they're by publishers I'd never heard of- so many regional variances! 'course, I'm still partial to Stamps-Baxter, and Vaughan....

T, I keep a binder with xeroxes (or scans) of all tables of contents, for just that reason. BUT... next I will have a character-recognition scanner. THEN I can convert the tables into TEXT and puderize 'em!

Thanks "Burke" for that interesting stuff on recognising Shape-Note songs. "TNDARLN" - yes, it's a direct quote - the chorus is something like : "... on the Shining Way / To the Land of Light / Going where the blessed .../ Where there come no night / Oh what joy...near.../...holy.../Oh how happy on the Shining Way/ To the Promised Land". Somehow though, the whole sound in this song with the "fa sol la singers", is redolent of a fairground steam organ sound!! It's very cheery (and charming). "WYSIWYG" I have some of the songs on tape and some on CD, but I have NO idea how to do more than 2-finger-type on a PC!!! (mine's not exactly state-of-the-art either). Re lyrics in general, I have M/S Works files (and I guess I can upgrade them to M/S Word without too much drama) that contain words of around 140 "folk-ish" songs and around 100 "jazz-ish/nostalgia" songs. (They are each divided into 5 alphabetical files). I don't mind sharing these with the lyric-loving, song-searching world, but apart from file-attaching them to an email to someone, I don't have a CLUE (or indeed, much time) on how to submit them. I have lots of songbooks too - but that's another story... Re the Camp Meeting / Revival / Brush Arbour songs - I have a particular quirky predilection for these, but rarely find books with the words. Most down here seem to contain the Wesleyan, or, Sankey style of hymn, rather than the down-to-earth, joyful, "folky" types that I like!! WYSIWYG, many of my requested titles came from the recent re-issues of old collections like : The Music of Kentucky and The Half Ain't Ever Been Told - both on Yazoo. I have very little on CD due to the now exorbitant cost in Oz, of purchasing music from overseas - plus our devalued $, the G & S Tax, the unemployment situation - none of these help the situation either!!! Re my name - "rich" and "joy" are parts of my given and middle names. My partner "christened" me "richjoy" awhile back, in the hopes that the meaning of the appellation would rub off on me, both in terms of monetary richness AND richness in joy - esp. as his name is Paul (poorl)!!! RJ, you are a treat. Be sure to stick around Mudcat a long time.

As far as posting your lyrics, it can take awhile to learn how. The FAQ thread (top of the thread list) has some tips. I can help post them for you if you want, but we usually post them one at a time and then often people will say what they know about them, too, in a discussion. You can e-mail me anything you would like to post until you know how to do the line breaks and follow the lyric format.

It sounds like you do have a lot of material I have not yet heard. Sigh... I hope to get to it someday. Soon we will have a new computer that can do the online song circles around here-- do you know about them? We get online on our modems and sing, taking turns, and the voices go right through the lines. It's a wonderful way to swap songs. Maybe I can learn some of yours that way. You see we actually DO those old things in our Episcopal Church here in Pennsylvania-- it's a little odd for an Episcopal church but it is not our main service where we do them so the "regular" people don't get too bent out of shape.

'tis done! I just finished scanning the TOCs from my gospel song book collection- 'knew I had a few, but turns out there's 73 of 'em!! Oops, didn't count the last two I just got from Ebay, but then, they're really hymnals.
I don't find the "There's a Beautiful City/Heaven", and I'll have to look for the others later. And I'll certainly try to do lookups as requested. Right now I'm in the backtoschoolgottageteverythingdonebefore mode, so it may take a while.....;)
I will mention this: in the process of looking for, say, Carter Family songs in these books, I found that often the titles used on recordings are not even close to the title the songwriter gave their song. The title for "On a Hill Lone and Gray" is actually "Calvary". 'don't even remember how I found that one....sometimes there's an index of first lines; but sometimes there's not even a connection.....

I have a recording of this on How Can I Keep from Singing, v. 1 (Yazoo 2020) I could not figure out all the words, but here's a start for checking hymnals. I could not find it in a general Google search or at cyberhymnal.

I hate to be pessimistic, but I have tried scanning indexes and tables of contents - using very good scanners and the best of commonly available OCR (optical character recognition) software, and I doubt that you will be very satisfied with the results you get with that method.

With very clean originals, OCR error rates are still high enough that you do so much "correcting" that it really is just as easy to type your own list. With the kind of originals you can scan out of an old book, you are going to get mostly garbage.

Even if your typing skills are fairly modest, entering a book at a time should not take long. (And by the time you get all of your stuff indexed, your typing skills will be greatly improved.)

I found when I got to about a dozen music books I was always doing the "I know I've got that but where is it" thing. I started putting everything into two simple lists in Word.

One list shows a "Short Name" for each book, then tab, and then lists the full description of the book.

The second list is "Song Title, tab, ShortName, tab, page number" for each song I might want to find. I fequently list alternate titles, and you could include "first lines" or other key information if you think it will be useful to you.

Because of the kinds of books I've collected, I also add a column (another tab) to show whether the song has music, lyrics (no of verses), etc., but that would depend on your needs.

An important advantage of having all of the titles in one list is that you can add new entries at the bottom and then sort the whole list, alphabetically or however else you want. (In Word, look at the "Table" tab to find "Sort.")

With the title first, Word will sort (by paragraphs) about 300 pages or so on my rather wimpy PC (64M RAM). By the time you get past that, you can probably figure out how to make overlapping sorts on a larger list.

My current index of songs is at about 36,137 Titles, from 186 Books and 207 CD/tape sources. The point is not that I have a great collection, but that I have an index. I find it quite easy to keep the index up to date, but only if I enter each new book immediately after I get it. If they back up, the task looks HUGE!

If you put off making your index until that magic machine (Scanner or whatever) shows up, you'll never get it done. The machine you're waiting for will never get there, or it won't be quite good enough to actually do the job.

Start a list. Use Word, Excel, a database, or one of those cute little inventory programs like MyInventory. But start a list - with one book now, and add one next week.

End of lecture.

Actually, I don't mean to sound negative, but waiting until it's easy is not going to get the job done.

Of course, that's unless you can find some sucker to do it for you!

John that's pretty much true in all things we do. I used to have this terrible habit of starting something and then getting frustrated because I didn't finish it the same day. Result was I quit undertaking any task that looked like it could not get finished in the time I alloted. NOW...I found a few years ago just start the project, do what ya can, and finish it later....I have accomplished so much with this new mindset that I often wonder what I could have done in life had I thought this way earlier on!

Today I heard "Happy on the Way" online on Venerable Radio. It sure is a different-sounding shape note song.

It's available on Religion Is A Fortune: Sacred Harp Singing (County Records 3542).

Old Weird America has the track available for listening here (scroll down to it) and says, "Another shape-note singing black group was recorded in Atlanta in 1931. Calling themselves "The Fa Sol La Singers", their four recorded sides are available on another Document Cd intituled "Black Vocal Groups vol.4″" There's another track there, "Jesus Walk With Me". (Old Weird America is a blog exploring Harry Smith's "Anthology of American Folk Music".)

He also says "Some black communities had also shape-note singing on meetings and "conventions" and used the same books as the whites, with the addition, in New Jersey, South Alabama and Florida communities, of "The Colored Sacred Harp", a book compiled by Judge Jackson in 1934. Their singing style and repertoire resembles those of the whites communities but has a distinctive African-American feeling."

Here's a site for "The Colored Sacred Harp". Unfortunately, there's no table of contents there.
