Subject: Recordings of From: Dalex Date: 30 Dec 97 - 01:15 PM I am hoping someone can tell me if these songs appear on any CDs. I have "Come Out Ye Black & Tans" on tape("Irish Songs of Freedom"), but I had to order it from Ireland and... suffice to say that tape is not a medium well known for its endurance... the bleedin thing's getting worn!! I am looking for this on a CD release. Also looking for a recording of "Old Dun Cow" (often known as "McIntyre!!") :)

Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 02 Jan 98 - 12:55 AM Brendan Nolan does The Old Dun Cow. They used to have some of his stuff at http://www.bpm.on.ca but I haven't looked there in a while. He is an Irishman with a very nice voice and style who used to play quite a bit at the Old Dublin in Montreal, although I think he has since moved to the United States. |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Bo Date: 02 Jan 98 - 04:34 AM I found a CD in a second hand CD shop by 'the Jolly Beggarmen' called THE VERY BEST OF IRISH REBEL SONGS. I actually think its a great cd recorded in Ireland and published by Fiesta in North America. It has Black and Tans as its 20th song (of 23). It doesnt have Macintire. Its got a whole whack or IRA songs. Try Fiesta Records, 251 Broadway, Lynbrook, New Yrok 11563. bo |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: MikeRuddy Date: 02 Jan 98 - 10:09 PM The Black and Tans was also done by a group called the Battering Ram on Rounder Records. The recording of this group includes The Bold Black Brimmer and The Tri-colored Ribbon and a bunch of other well done songs. If I remember the LP backcover, the producer was in Mountjoy or something at the time of the release. My LP was gone so I got a Cassette tape six months or so back from a company in Connemara: Clo Iar Chonnacta at: http://www.wombat.ie/cic/ Unfortunately it is still a tape. But at least there is hope. Mike |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Teru Date: 05 Jan 98 - 12:15 AM I have a CD "Irish Songs of Freedom" published by Dolphin Records. The songs must be the same as those you have on the tape. I got the CD at HMV, Hong Kong about 2 years ago, when I visited there. Is it difficult to order the CDs from Ireland? Where do you live? I (living in Japan) often order books and CDs from countries where they were bublished. To get the CD, ask to the nearest HMV (Music Master), or to Dolphin Traders, 56 Moore Street, Dublin 1. Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Elektra@gate.net Date: 09 Jan 98 - 01:38 AM Actually, yes, Brendan Nolan DOES do a version of The Old Dun Cow. A live version is on his album _Southern Sunset_, which I was lucky enough to purchase from him when he played recently at my favorite local pub here in sunny Florida! :) He seems to tour around my fair state quite a bit these days. Hope it helps! |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 11 Jan 98 - 06:27 PM Good for him. It is probably a lot warmer in Florida than in Montreal. |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Mike Ruddy Date: 12 Jan 98 - 11:11 AM I have had no problem ordering anything from Ireland as long as I use a VISA or Mastercard. The exchange thing is done by the card company. I live in Tennessee, USA so I cannot comment on how difficult it is to get things through whatever customs there is in Japan. From my standpoint there was no problem on anything I have ordered from Ireland. |
Subject: The Battering Ram From: esylvers@politician.com Date: 21 Oct 98 - 06:03 PM Hello, I have one CD by The Battering Ram and was interested in purchasing more of their music, yet can't find anything else. I'm also looking for the full version of The Rising of the Moon, most other songs I have usually end it by the third lyric. Thanks |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Martin Ryan. Date: 21 Oct 98 - 07:56 PM "Rising of the Moon (click here)"? Check the DT - then start another thread for it, or I'll forget! Regards |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Eric Lackford; Eric@Lackford20.Freeserve.Co.UK Date: 22 Oct 98 - 05:42 PM Re; Old Dun Cow. I have a set of hand written lyrics written in 1667-8 by an old bloke who used to sing this song around the London folk clubs. Interestingly enough I used to go to a pub called "Old dun cow" near the Elephant and Castle in London when I was younger.Though I haven't lived in London for nearly thirty years. I can e-mail them out if anyone wants a copy. By the way on the other side of his bit 'O' paper are 8 verses of "The Hot Asphalt". Can't help with details of anymore recorded versions though-sorry. ps Just found this site whilst browsing the Folk music site. Cheers-Eric the Viking. |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: skw@ Date: 23 Oct 98 - 09:05 AM 'Get Out Ye Black and Tans' was also recorded by the Wolfe Tones on 'Live-Alive O' (1980). It was, incidentally, written (or claimed, at any rate) by Dominic Behan. The Spinners recorded 'The Old Dun Cow' on 'Not Quite Folk' back in 1969, but that probably isn't available any more. BTW, can anyone tell me a little more about the song. The author's name is given as 'Wincott', and it seems to be Irish, but how old is it? It sounds like music hall to me. On the subject of rebel songs. Years ago I found an album called 'Songs of Civil Rights' by Owen McDonagh and The Bogside Men (never heard of them before or since!). It had no date, no information, but it tells the story of the early days of the 'Troubles' which, thankfully, now seem to be coming to an end. I worked out that it must have come out c. 1971. Any further information - authors of songs, etc - would be gratefully received. - Susanne |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: tdustdum@aol.com Date: 24 Oct 98 - 08:21 AM Old Dun Cow / The B & T's My wife and I used to sing these songs around the local folk scene. Lyrics available if required. I also have a copy of the Irish Rebel Songs - Jolly Beggarmen LP record. |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Barry Finn Date: 24 Oct 98 - 04:03 PM skw@, some while back a friend played me a tape of his, what I remember is a song the same as the shanty "Hoe-Eye Man" only here called "The Bogeside Man" by the Bogeside Men, the rest of the recording dealt with the same themes you mentioned. Never heard anything else of them either. Barry |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: O'Boyle Date: 27 Oct 98 - 10:23 PM The Fenians also do a recoding of "Come out ye black and tans" on their "live at the harp" cd. I think you can order it on their webpage. They also have some music samples on the page. Slainte Rick |

Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Date: 18 Dec 98 - 08:00 PM Oh, I found Come Out Ye Black & Tans as a mp3-file :-)) |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Brack& Date: 18 Dec 98 - 08:28 PM What is a MP3 file? A Midi? Mick Bracken |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Date: 18 Dec 98 - 09:33 PM No, a mp3 is a very strong compressed file. The compression rate from a mp3 to a wav-file is 1:12 And the sound can be in CD-quality-style. You need a player (viewer) for mp3's. Download a free-player and get more informations about mp3 on www.mp3.com |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Date: 18 Dec 98 - 11:56 PM I have an ancient recording of louis Killen's on which is The Old Dun Cow. Over all its a good album( The label is printed in Esperanto!) with only one oddity in the bunch. A song in an almost impossible key. I worked with Lou and His then wife Sally at a concert and I asked him about the song. He said they had recorded more music than they had the vinyl for but they couldn't decided where to edit. The solution, speed up the master tape and record the vinyl at regular speed. Basically it mechanically transposed the song and modulated it into a different key. And here I use capos. Don Meixner |
Subject: RE: Recordings of From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 21 Dec 98 - 08:14 AM If you go to mp3.com and into the folk music category you can download Seamus Kennedy's version of "The Old Dun Cow." Roger in Baltimore |
