Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: GeorgeH Date: 03 Jul 01 - 06:01 AM Well said, Ian!! Actually, this is a bloody stupid thread; there's no such thing as a best ANYTHING - it's all too subjective. It would be marginally less stupid if people justified their choices a little . . the current thread on Favourite Guitarists was at least a little more sensible in this respect. (Yes, I'm in a really bad mood at the moment - if you want to know why refer to the Dave Bulmer / Celtic Music thread). A plague on all guests!! G. |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Frogmore Date: 03 Jul 01 - 08:22 AM In my opinion, no other instrument can be played in so many different styles as the guitar. Pass one around a circle of pickers and behold. If you want to measure competition, try something like the high jump. Then it's obvious. Shut up and play yer guitar. |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: M.Ted Date: 03 Jul 01 - 10:03 AM I listened to this guy Murray, and I can't judge the guitar playing, but the drum machine is really solid-- |

Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Jul 01 - 12:05 PM For listening pleasure, check out Richard Gilewitz, a little-known Florida genius who composes most of what he performs. He can make a guitar replicate a whole orchestra. I have been a fan for 13 years now. |

Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Amos Date: 03 Jul 01 - 11:15 PM Well, Rick, I would be most honored at the association, as long as you let me smack my lips in 4/4 to help set them up. The prospect is quite exciting all around, actuaslly...but I hope you won't be too hard, as an act to follw! Regards, A. |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Rick Fielding Date: 03 Jul 01 - 11:24 PM Nah, writers are better lovers than guitar players! Best guitarist? My vote still has to go to Lenny Breau. Why? "Cause I've heard him play Flamenco. Classical Folk Country Jazz Rock ....and he played EACH of those forms brilliantly and the way they were supposed to be played. Had he lived long enough to hear "Celtic", I've no doubt he would have played that style as well as the best do. If there's anyone else who's RECORDED (that being proof) as many styles played as well, I'd like to know who there are. Rick |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: GUEST,khandu Date: 03 Jul 01 - 11:42 PM The best guitarist is the one that moves my spirit at a given time. Once, an old black man from Greenwood, MS, who could only strum the chords was, at that moment, to me , the best guitarist in the world. Best has little to do with technique, but a lot to do with the expression of the real inner man. khandu |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: M.Ted Date: 04 Jul 01 - 10:54 PM He was the best, Rick--He even used to play those harmonic solos that the hot-shot rock guitarist like so much-- |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: balladeer Date: 04 Jul 01 - 11:04 PM The guy/gal who has great chops PLUS the ability to convey deep feeling - he/she would be my favourite. |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Willie-O Date: 05 Jul 01 - 09:27 AM There isn't any best, but they sure don't get any better than Lenny Breau. I saw a TVO documentary on him recently with a lot of priceless video footage of him playing. Everything Rick said. Since these were all live performances, they were probably better than his recordings-- Breau was generally considered to be much better live than in the studio. Two very telling interviews: a lot of Chet Atkins, who was very close to Lenny despite their 180 degree lifestyle difference. And a remark attributed to Anne Murray, who just said of Lenny's tenure working with her "Yeah, he got my whole damn band on drugs!" W-O |

Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Murray MacLeod Date: 05 Jul 01 - 11:15 PM Ever notice how Scots nominate Scottish guitarists, Irish nominate Irish guitarists, Canadians nomminate Canadian guitarists, and Americans nominate Americans? Is there a pattern here? Personally, I think the whole concept of the "Best Guitarist in the World" is extremely silly, and when I was talking recently to the best guitarist in the world, he thought so too. Murray

Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Ritchie Date: 06 Jul 01 - 04:58 AM well the best guitarist in the world that I have seen is Tommy Emmanuel but now, after reading 'Soul Music' by Terry Pratchet, I may have to change my mind and concede that 'Buddy' probably is. rock on ffolks. regards ritchie |

Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Steve Latimer Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:45 AM How long is a piece of string? The only thing that I know for sure is in the words of one of my favourites, "It ain't me, Babe" |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: gnu Date: 06 Jul 01 - 05:19 PM Murray... probably more geographic than nationalistic. Proximity breeds familiarity. I am always amazed at the ability I witness when I see a live performance versus a recording made for distribution. I believe live performances influence peoples' perception of the talents of individuals. Of course, there is no such thing as best. Thank goodness. |
Subject: RE: Best Guitarist in The World! From: Murray MacLeod Date: 07 Jul 01 - 06:23 PM IanC, I think we need to know whether you are in fact Ian Carr, or should I say THE Ian Carr. If you are, then I would not argue at length with anybody who nominated you as best guitarist. Just a shame you're not as pretty as your accordion playing partner ......:-) Murray |
