Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Jul 01 - 04:39 PM Rob, I can see right away that you have some serious problems and it surprises me since I've noticed that some of your posts are insightful and lucid. You are to be commended for overcoming such significant drawbacks and posting, for the most part, in a sane manner. You must be in therapy constantly to achieve this, but I want to thank you personally for making the effort. Welcome to the 'Cat. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Jul 01 - 05:59 PM Well that's easy for you to say gnu, living in Canada and sittin' around drinking Turkey Turd Beer! But what of poor Rob Dale? He's not only Canadian.....a minor problem at best, many have overcome it............but the poor lad is living in Georgia!!! This is a double whammy and is what is so surprising about his very well done postings. Gnu, in your case, you haven't overcome the Canadian thing, or perhaps you're just an imbecile.....I dunno. But Rob is holding it all together and doing a great job, especially in the Song Challenge threads, while also living in Georgia!!! Personally, I think he deserves two free weeks at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed, don't you? Keep up the good work Rob......Welcome again to the 'cat and if you need the time at the NYCFTTS, a tiple will be waiting for you! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: GUEST,RobDale Date: 03 Jul 01 - 07:04 PM People in Georgia have been welcoming and relentlessly friendly to me. All things considered America is a wonderful place. This country has made me feel like a very welcome guest! On the folk music side there is quite a nice little blues and folk music community here in Columbus which has welcomed me and given me the encourage I needed to hone my guitar skills and start writing songs. Thanks Uncle Sam and all your neices and nephews! |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Jul 01 - 08:02 PM The USA can indeed be a very nice place to be in many respects. Lots of good-hearted people. What I want to do is quote from Bob Dylan, on the eve of this 4rth of July...
"As I went out one morning Now Bob had a completely different meaning for the "damsel" in mind in the original song (I believe she represented fame, riches, and a host of temptations)..but what those 4 lines have me thinking of now is: Lady Liberty - the fairest damsel that ever did walk in chains. Still in chains today. Mother Earth - groaning under the heel of ruthless mercantile expansion and waste of resources, as water and air are poisoned, as topsoil is wasted and destroyed. Still in chains today. The Goddess aspect of Divinity...ignored and trampled on by mainstream western religions for some thousands of years now. Still in chains today. White Buffalo Woman - the Christ figure of the Lakota and Cheyenne, who brought civilization to the people of the Great Plains. Her Spirit and Truth still in chains today. And Tom Paine - splendid, courageous, amazing social visionary...whose words sparked revolutions that cast off the rule of corrupt, complacent monarchs and sent waves of democracy rippling across the world in the 1700's and 1800's and right up to now. Now when human beings, the very sons and daughters of God, are denigrated as mere "consumers", pawns of industry and advertising...who will re-ignite the torch that Tom Paine set a-blazing all those years ago? So on this July 4th, let's remember Tom Paine, and let's remember that there are still so many chains that must be broken. Your revolution has only just begun. - LH |
Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: TishA Date: 03 Jul 01 - 08:17 PM On my mother's 89th birthday June 20th we wished her health & happiness and many more. I guess if we had looked, we could have found faults to point out to her. Maybe we could have made it seem like constructive criticism. But that's not what we do on birthdays at our house.

On the other hand, she has a mirror and sees the things that could be better. Consider as an alternative that Americans could have been given up on what was once called "the Great Experiment" long ago rather than learning and moving on. Happy Birthday, Mom! |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: Amos Date: 04 Jul 01 - 12:56 AM Wal, LH, you can put one up and see if anyone salutes! But as an aside, notice that the whole myth of the Possum has been ricocheted and amplified and tweaked and fed back in heterodynes and otherwise been inflated with a LOT of energy on its way to becoming the undying icon it now is! Why Spaw alone musta writ at least 200 press releases on it! A |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: Gervase Date: 04 Jul 01 - 05:58 AM If it's a party, do we get to play Postman's Knock and Doctors and Nurses? And, of course, a party means someone's just got to throw up. Or is that youthful exuberance now behind the US of A and she's got to the stage where a bit of judicious fibbing about the age comes in, together with a tendency not to want to make too much fuss about birthdays. "39 again? How lovely for you!" Or is it the best of all - a nice meal and a few drinks in good company? Whatever, Happy Birthday the lot of you! |
Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: gnu Date: 04 Jul 01 - 07:16 AM Gee, Spaw, I didn't think a toast post would burn your ass like that. This "Canadian thing"... Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: 53 Date: 04 Jul 01 - 09:31 AM "I am proud to be an American, at least I know I'm free..." So go the words of a famous song. And I am proud to be American. But when I read articles like one in olur local paper today, I realize I take too much for granted. An 11 year old girl moved to North Myrtle Beach with her parents in 1993, because they knew the opportunity for education was far better here. She spoke no English when she arrived yet has done excellent. She graduated this year as valedictorian of her senior class and will attend Clemson University in the fall with three scholarships to help. She and her parents are proud to be Americans now too. The article was in the Myrtle Beach Sun News. It is probably available online. Bob Bestler usually writes humor; I commend him for his excellent article on this Independence day! Anyway, I also say "Happy Birthday" to this great nation! Glenda |

From: GUEST,Nitpicking Smartass in a state of utter glee Date: 04 Jul 01 - 11:24 AM Oh, Glenda, Glenda...dear 53...I know I should let this pass, but the temptation is just too much for me. The Polish girl? You state: "She spoke no English when she arrived yet has done excellent." I think you meant "excellentLY. Alas, the vanishing adverb! It's an almost extinct species in America these days. I wonder if even your "English" teachers recall those hundreds of once common words that used to end in "LY"? This is the kind of thing that really makes a pedant's day. (note: there was one adverb in that sentence too...) |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Jul 01 - 05:02 PM Doug - Yep. Some days I do. Other days I don't. But didn't you appreciate my praise of Tom Paine? Amos - What do the hearts and minds of free individuals matter to MacDonalds, WalMart, and Exxon, when well-programmed, consumption-addicted robots are so much more likely to keep on buying their stuff? Ever read Adbusters Magazine? Still, what you said was, as usual, well said. I'm all for the continued advancement of the Great Experiment. - LH |

"The sun never shone on a cause of greater worth. 'Tis not the affair of a city, a country, a province, or a kingdom, but of a continent -- of at least one eighth part of the habitable globe. 'Tis not the concern of a day, a year, or an age; posterity are virtually involved in the contest, and will be more or less affected even to the end of time, by the proceedings now. Now is the seed-time of continental union, faith and honor. The least fracture now will be like a name engraved with the point of a pin on the tender rind of a young oak; the wound will enlarge with the tree, and posterity read it in full grown characters." (...a seditious little pamphlet which ought to be required reading everywhere, IMHO.) Sarah |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: Amos Date: 05 Jul 01 - 01:02 AM As I write from the Western edge of the continent, about which Tom Paine wrote and dreamed, the thunder of fireworks is coming through my office windows from the pacific beaches just a mile away. They rattle on like the roar of distant guns, banging rhythmically through the clouds and bringing over the seaguarding mountain called Soledad the drumming not of retailventures and their marketplace trials, but of a deeper heart-sound that is being heard tonight, as every Fourth by the same millions who make Walmart a success. These are people who may by shlock and who may eat fat, who may drink too much beer and pass out watching canned inanities on their screens in their LaZBoys. But even these -- the masses of "Philisitine" America -- will open their eyes and sit up for a moment when the word "freedom" is whispered to them. Whatever their education or taste, it drills straight to their souls. I honestly believe that less than 3 in a hundred of them can sleep through hearing that thought. And that simple ingredient, the most broadly distributed agreement in the most prosperous nation in the history of Earth (as far as we know) is also the answer to Little Hawk's question. Their riches are built on freedom. No doubt, better uses for this precious concept can be nevisioned and put forth. But that makes it none the less precious. No doubt, wiser perspectives on this deep and wide belief can be written, but that makes it no less deep. The rhythm of explosions over the mountain by the sea will still in a little while. The stream of thought-in-soul that informs that rhythm will never stop singing -- the one song that almost every human being knows the words to. A |

Subject: RE: BS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S.A.!! From: Eluned Date: 05 Jul 01 - 05:46 AM Well, the 4th in this part of NC was one wet sucker! I had one good time when the storm first started, though; the light-show was my only fireworks display, but I went out very lightly dressed (I'm in an isolated spot in the countryside) in it to feel the blessed cool rain after a day of suffering heat, and to feel the awe in and see the awesomeness of the power of nature.... and to wash my car and my hair so long as I was out there. It was coming down REALLY hard! Fortunately for me, the hailstones were happening further north! *gryn* Eluned |
