Jim ...

Thanks for posting this.

Forgot I'd ever posted a request ... anyway, it was the first post I placed which got a reply from ard mhacha - a very daycent man with whom I've developed a very pleasant rapport over the past wee while.

Anyway ... in a roundabout way, I've answered my own query since I'm the editor of "Pay The Reckoning", from which site you sourced the lyrics!

... Aidan Crossey

JANE FALLOON
(Words, Jimmy Creaney. Tune, traditional, "The Bright Silvery Light Of The Moon")

One evening as I strolled down the Aghagallon Road,
I met a girl whose name was Jane Falloon.
Well, we had a pleasant talk and she asked me for a walk
By the bright silvery light of the moon.

How I cursed my bloody lot as I cuddled this oul' bat,
For my ass it turned a lovely shade of blue
As I lay in the dust and the dirt, nothing on but a wee short shirt,
By the bright silvery light of the moon.

Now she was no beauty queen, for her teeth were turning green.
She had a pimple on her nose like a big balloon.
And by her breath 'twas plain to see she had scallions for her tea,
By the bright silvery light of the moon.

"Oh," says she, "I've got no charm, but I own a nice wee farm,
And you could be its owner very soon.
Now if only you'll decide to make me your sweet bride
By the bright silvery light of the moon."

"Oh." says I, "my darling Jane, you make this plea in vain,
And although that I make look a silly loon,
I'd rather die a pauper's death than catch the smell of your oul' breath
By the bright silvery light of the moon."

Nice one ard mhacha.

I'll larn this one then and give it a golder every now and again.

(A mate of mine from Newry - in his cups - always sings that first verse I wroite out above after he heard me sing it one night. We'll both be pleased to have the full version. I could always create a page on my website to host Jimmy Creaney's stuff ... how would that sound?)

As a lad I would attend the odd guest tea or other such event and our next door neighbour, the late Paddy McCann originally of 'Cor Lane, Derrycor and latterly of Wolfs Island, would give a rendition of a parody, only some of whose lines I can remember.

Can anybody else help.

The lines I can remember go ...

Down the Agahagallon Road
One evening as I strolled
I met a girl and her name was Jane Falloon
Mind she was no beauty queen
For her teeth were turnin' green
And she'd a pimple on her nose like a big balloon

Another phrase I can recall was

It was very plain to see
She'd had scallions for her tea
By the bright silvery light of the moon
