Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: katlaughing Date: 05 Jul 01 - 04:15 PM Do you know in what thread, Don? Under what nom de plume? Claudia, if you you can read an interesting posting by one of members who saw him in concert last year. I have always loved his music and have one of his very first albums when he came out with Geronimo's Cadillac and Wildfire. Have fun geting to know him and his music! kat |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: Stewie Date: 05 Jul 01 - 07:30 PM I have several of his albums and enjoy his music very much. For me, the best is 'Geronimo's Cadillac' which, for some reason, does not seem to have made it to CD. It would be worth seeking a second-hand copy of the LP. I reckon its highlights are the title track and a delightful gospel song, 'The Lights of the City'. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: Matt_R Date: 05 Jul 01 - 07:49 PM I've always loved his song "I Come From A Long Line of Love"...it was THE song of the autumn of 1987. The song sheet has a permanent place on my music stand (which contains my current favs to sing).

Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: rangeroger Date: 05 Jul 01 - 08:34 PM I dearly love "Geronimo's Cadillac". I learned it from the Mary McCaslin/Jim Ringer album " The Bramble and the Rose" MMM's CD "The Cowboy Way" is great. I got a chance to talk with him when he did a concert at Silver Mountain in Kellogg,Idaho. he is a really nice man. rr |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: JenEllen Date: 05 Jul 01 - 08:40 PM My favourite has got to be the version of Old Chisolm Trail on the Cowboy Songs album. Red Steagall, JimBob Tinsley and Don Edwards help out, and the song is a real treat. Best of luck, Claudia, you've uncovered a treasure. ~Jen |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: Matt_R Date: 05 Jul 01 - 08:53 PM An old cowboy and a young buckaroo were workin', ridin' fence The old hand was testin' the kid on his skill and common sense He said "Son, if you seen three men in a pickup truck Dressed alike from boot to hat, Could you tell which one was the real cowboy, just from where he sat?" The kid scratched his head awhile and then he said "Well, there ain't no way to know!" The old hand grinned and then he said "Kid, you've still got a ways to go. The real cowboy's the one in the middle. He ain't there just by fate. 'Cause first he don't have to drive, and then he don't have to mess with the gate.. |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: Pseudolus Date: 05 Jul 01 - 10:14 PM Wildfire was one of the first songs I was able to play from beginning to the end when I started learning the guitar. I also do "What's Forever For"....great song.... Frank |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: paddymac Date: 06 Jul 01 - 09:45 AM I think that MMM has also established himself as one heck of a good cowboy poet. |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: Rex Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:45 AM I first heard of him when he was just MM and lived about ten minutes down the road in Bailey. He's done alright for himself. I like "Cherokee Fiddle", a wistful song about an old fiddler that he wrote God knows how long ago. Don't think it ever got on one of his albums. Rex |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: GUEST,Gary T (who ate my cookie?) Date: 06 Jul 01 - 03:09 PM Rex, if that "Cherokee Fiddle" is the one where the refrain goes "And when you smell smoke and cinders...", it was recorded by some country artist in the 80's--Johnny Lee, perhaps? My favorite of Michael's songs is "Rolling Nowhere." While "Wildfire" is pretty, it's a bit sappy for my taste. |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: richlmo Date: 06 Jul 01 - 10:27 PM I love "What Am I Doin'Hangin'Round? " Recorded by the Monkees. I also love the choice of instruments in "Carolina In The Pines". Good arrangement. I'm not sure if he wrote this ( think he did ) but I LOVE "Fiddlin' Man ". I listened to him more when he didn't have the Martin. |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: Matt_R Date: 06 Jul 01 - 10:50 PM Yep, Johnny Lee did sing "Cherokee Fiddle". 1978 it came out. I remember cuz it was the year I was born. |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: jaze Date: 07 Jul 01 - 07:46 AM MMM does the most beautiful version of "Spanish is The Loving Tongue". Even a couple of my favorite singers like Judy Collins or Emmylou can't touch his melancholy rendition. I've heard a sound clip of James Keelghan's version and that sounds pretty good, too.(See I am learning from you guys!) |
Subject: RE: Help: Michael Martin Murphy From: Rex Date: 07 Jul 01 - 08:34 AM Yup, Gary, that be the one.
When he'd smell, the smoke and the cinders,
Two of my favorite things, fiddles and whiskey. Glad to hear it got on some vinyl afterall. Course it did get recorded locally. By Colorado's own Dave Ferretta who had a fine music store in town years ago.
