you might try to get a recording
of BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON doing it
since he's the one who originally wrote it
the lyrics aren't too different
but you might enjoy hearing what the original sounds like

Here is what I remember
There's one kind favor I'll ask of you
There's one kind favor I'll ask of you
There's one kind favor, I'll ask of you
See that my grave is kept clean

There's two white horses in a line --- etc
Carrying me to the burial ground

Did you ever hear that coffin sound -- etc
Still another poor boy in the ground
'
You can dig my grave with a bloody spade -- etc
At least make sure the digger gets paid

Repeat first verse
I'm sure there are more, check recordings by Dylan and Van Ronk

Mark

Subject: Lyr Add: SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN (H Smith)

Maybe it's called Three White Horses?

Or perhaps this is n't the one you're referring to:

SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN
(TWO WHITE HORSES)

Traditional (as sung by Hobart Smith)

Well, it's one kind favour I ask of you (3)
Please see that my grave is kept clean

It's a long lane, ain't got no end (3)
It's the longest lane that's ever been

Three white horses in a line (3)
You  may let me down with a golden chain

Dig my grave with a silver spade (3)
You  may let me down with a golden chain

Did you ever hear a trumpet sound? (3)
You will know the poor boy's in the ground

Did you ever hear a church bell tone?
You will know the poor boy's dead and gone

Regards,

A

A source for the lyric can be found at the Peter, Paul and Mary website here I know there are other versions out there, but this is the only one I know of on the net.

Coincidentally, I just listened to a recording of Allan C. singing ONE KIND FAVOR, from when he was here on the Adventure trip last June. Maybe he can post the lyrics here soon.

You folks have been so helpful in the past. I've returned to the well.

I have learned a very exciting way to play the song "One Kind Favor" ...problem is, the cd from which I learned it took SO many liberties with the lyric.

I've tried the search here every way I can figure to use it. I know at least someone here knows the song because they cleverly used it as the title of a thread, but, alas, no song in your files.

Dare I ask for help again??
