Subject: Bug-Eyed/Black-Eyed Susie
From: franko@ctrvax.vanderbilt.edu

I heard at a fiddle festival in June what I thought was "Bug-eyed Susie" as the chorus to a song. Later, I was told that it was really "Black-eyed Susie." Then, someone said that there were two totally separate tunes, with the same lyrics- except different eye descriptions! Was this last friend of mine pulling a fast one on me? Or was I just mis-hearing the word, in my sleepless state that evening. I must say though, that I heard a fiddler play the tune, "Black-eyed Susie," and I could not glean the melody that I had remembered out of it. Anybody got the tune in an e-mailable form(text)? I did check DigiTrad- and found the lyrics(Black-Éyed Susie), but no tune. Thanks, Franko

I found the lyrics to Black-Eye Susie on DigiTrad
I'm looking for anymore you guys got
Here is what I found on the search

Black-Eyed Susie

All I want in this creation
'S a pretty little wife and a big plantation

Black-eyed Susie, 'bout half-grown
Jumps on a boy like a dog on a bone

I got drunk and I got woozy
I woke up with black-eyed Susie

Susie and the boys went berry pickin'
Boys got drunk and Susie got a lickin
Susie and the boys they went corn shuckin'
Boys got drunk and Susie got another lickin

All I need to make me happy
'S two little boys to call me pappy

I love my wife, love my baby,
Love my biscuits sopped in gravy

There are some more, Neo, but I haven't done this for many years; I'll try to remember them. Down here, this is usually a dance number, which means it goes on interminably, with band members stepping forward to do a verse whenever they can think of one.

Two old maids sitting in the sand,
Each one wishing that the other was a man.

Up red oak and down salt water,
Some old man's gonna lose his daughter.

One named Tom and the other named Davy,
One's gonna sop it up, t'other's gonna save it.

A single couplet is quoted in a novel Smiling Pass, by Eliot H. Robinson (Boston: The Page Company, 1921), page 386:

"Hop up, skip up, Black-eyed Susie.
Mighty good-lookin' but the boys won't choose ye."

--which is a unique rhyme, as far as I know.

Attributed to Oscar Brand- can anyone verify?

Hey, Black Eyed Susie, she's full grown,
She jumps on a man like a dog on a bone.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

Black Eyed Susie went a-huckleberry pickin'
Susie got drunk and the boys took a lickin'.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

I'm walking drunk across the water
Some old man's gonna' lose his daughter.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

All I want from this creation
Is a pretty little girl with a big plantation.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

Now some got drunk and some got boozy
I got drunk and Black Eyed Susie.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

I got me a gal ahead of the hill,
If she won't do it her sister will.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

Now there's two old maids sittin' in the sand,
Each one wished the other was a man.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

Now, I got me a gal in a couple of gaps,
She's got four kids and they call me Pap.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

I got me a gal in Witchita,
She's got four kids they call me pa.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

I got me a gal in Baton Rouge,
She's got ten kids, The Lord knows who's.

Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey, Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie,
Hey.

Yes, Black Eyed Susie, she's full grown,
She jumps on a man like a dog on a bone.

Being as I've got time on my hands, here's the Guy Mitchell version

PRETTY LITTLE BALCK EYED SUZIE
I love the sea, I love the navy
Love my biscuits soaked in gravy
But pretty little black eyed Susie
But pretty little black eyed Susie
Cross my heart I love ya best of all

I love the hills, I love the prairie
I love Jane, and I love Mary
But pretty little black eyed Susie
But pretty little black eyed Susie
Cross my heart I love ya best of all

I'm as happy as a king
Got the world upon a string
Can't ask for more
I'm right at heaven's door

Ooooh! I used to do a lot of teasin'
Changed my gals with ev'ry season
But pretty little black eyed Susie
But pretty little black eyed Susie
Pretty little black eyed Susie I love you

I love my pipe, I love tomaters
I love candied sweet pertaters

But pretty little black eyed Susie
But pretty little black eyed Susie
Cross my heart I love ya best of all
Used to say I'd never wed
Those were foolish words I said
`cos now I see
That you were meant for me

Ooooh! I used to be a guy who gambled
I had wand'rin' shoes that rambled
But pretty little black eyed Susie
But pretty little black eyed Susie
Cross my heart my rambl'in' days are through
Pretty little black eyed Susie I love you
My pretty little black eyed Susie I love you

I looked up this song, hoping for fond memories. My father used to sing this song to me, (Maybe? hazy memories) and I've always thought it was sweet. I have the 45, and all I remember were the first words, "I love the sea, I love the navy, I love biscuits," etc. from the Guy Mitchell version. No record player anymore, and my father died in the 90s. So I clicked here for information...

Now that I read the other lyrics, I am a little horrified. I knew Oscar Brand was ... bawdy... but this is definitely _not_ sweet.   *shudder*

I think I'll still keep the sweet memory though.

All I want in this creation, pretty little girl and big plantation.
Fall in the river, fall in the water, I'm in love with Elijah's daughter.

Oh my pretty little black-eyed Susie [3x]
Oh, my pretty little Sue.
===============
In college I had a friend whose family had lived in Kentucky for generations. She was white, had straight, light-brown hair and eyes so black that you couldn't discern the pupils. When I remember her, I think of Black-eyed Susie.

The earliest mention of "Black-Eyed Susie" that I've found is in the Dallas Morning News in April, 1900, in a list of tunes played at a local old fiddlers' contest in Texas.

No lyrics.

Hi, Susan. Yes those lyrics in the first post are pretty sick, aren't they?

Makes me understand why YouTube has ads like this:

If you have the privilege of being a Dad to girls, there is nothing you wouldn't do to protect your little angel. So join the club, grab a DAB (Dads Against Boyfrineds) shirt, and let everyone know you're the Dad with a shotgun waiting. Nothing gets the message across quite like these t-shirts for dads with daughters.
