What Would Woody Do?

With great bemusement, I, a now infamously anonymous and unwelcome GUEST, watch as Mudcatters fail to see a Real Folksinger (tm) when they appear among them as a mystery guest among them.

Tee hee.

Hey ADG.

Don't you know that the polite convention is that if you wish to be a guest but still converse in ongoing discussions, you choose at least SOME handle and then stick to it in that thread? So could you please at least stay "Guest WWWD"?

This is from someone who has no opinion whatsoever on the threads where you "arrived" but who saw the result of your approach to posting. It isn't your fault people here will not relaxedly converse with strangers, but you are among people who do care, rightly or wrongly, that they have at least a clue to whom they are addressing themselves.

...what *do* you suppose Woody would do with a deliciously ironic situation like this?

Geeze it's a good thing we finally got a REAL folksinger to show up around here. I was getting SO tired of waiting.

But Unfortunately, Mystery Vomit, we have two criteria for excellence here: the second being a desire to actually communicate with fellow humans.

And to be blunt I doubt you're as real as you claim, given that the usual hard lessons of folksinging which breed compassion and courtesy in the participant, do not seem to have taken root in this instance.

Or did you mean "commercially successful" as a synonym for "real?".

Regards,

A

We will all flame together when we flame
We're too chickenshit to do it with our name
We might be one or many
Of control we ain't got any
But we all flame together when we flame

There are some who seem to dominate the forum
And if you aren't agin 'em you are for 'em
The cult of personality
Is harmful to our sanity
So I've decided to become the quorum

We're nothing quite as evil as you say
We're really quite frustrated with the way
The discussion here is goin'
So the discontent we're sowin'
Is supposed to bring a bright and cheery day

We'd like you to pretend we aren't a person
And then get mad when you commence to cursin'
We may have meant no flamin'
But we didn't put a name in
So how could you see it any other way

I relent. I have been fundamentally reborn as What Would Woody Do?

I love this pseudonym so much, I think I might just have to go an' copyright it. All for myself.

Maybe I'll make me up some WWWD? buttons and bumperstickers. Start hawking "I Survived the WWWD? Mudcat Wars" t-shirts to at my gigs.

And of course, I couldn't leave without a song, so here's one I call

"Don't Tell Woody I Made Me a New Song Outta One of His Old Ones"

This land ain't your land This land is our land No place for strangers On our cyber island Don't try to post here Unbeknownest to us dear Cuz this land ain't made for you and me.

Yours,

WWWD?

I'm a rebel, I'm a rebel
But I ain't got any cause
I got a need to prove
I won't obey your laws
And if there are no rules,
I'll make 'em up myself
'Cause I need to break the rules to be a rebel

Oh, I'm outside your walls
'Cause I prefer it on my own
But then I'll turn around and say
You left me all alone
And I'll bitch and whine and piss and moan
That you all abandoned me
'Cause I have to feel left out to be a rebel

And I like to feel original
'Cause that's what rebels need to be
So I follow the examples
Of the ones preceding me
So I'll be just like the others
Saying anti-social things
You gotta act like all the rest if you're a rebel

What would Woody do?

Woody would make his point and move on.

Woody would have something less trivial to protest.

Woody would be be fighting fascists, not folksingers.

Woody wouldn't be too concerned about useless definitions about "real" folksingers.

Woody said "You can only write what you know."

Woody would be sweetalking all the ladies.

Woody would CERTAINLY be PROUD to let you know his name.

Hey WWWD, lighten up! And you too, Anon Guest. Life is too short for this crap. Laugh with people, not at them. Or please move on.

Arlo performed live at the Boston Fourth of July Celebration and he looked and sounded great, although unlike the rest of us he seems to have aged considerably. He did City of New Orleans and his Dad's This Land is Your Land including his "favorite verse" about the sign that had Private Property on one side, and nothing on the other, and "that side was made for you and me".

I probably should be honored to be posting to the same thread as the anonymous "Real Folksinger" but since I don't know who he is I'll just say

Lonesome EJ,

Glad you enjoyed ADG's show in Boston on the 4th. The Real Folksinger and Mystery referred to in this thread is Arlo. He posted to a Mudcat thread last week, talking about Woody. I think the WWWD? was intended to be clue to help people find the thread.

Mischievous, certainly. But pretty harmless fun, IMO.

Likely a number people did notice his presence, but it is a bit odd that no one called attention to his posting. But then, he slips in and out of the folk forums all the time. Sometimes he gets noticed, sometimes not.

Arlo Guthrie is, from what I've read and heard, a smart guy, an excellent songwriter and song interpreter, and someone who survived the frequently-damaging combination of fame and the sixties with his head screwed on right.

So it's great that he's been posting here. He belongs here. He's no more or less a "real" folksinger than two dozen other Mudcatters--I have no statistics and only the vaguest of criteria here, could be two hundred--who enjoy the exchange of ideas, music and community available in the Mudcat Forum.

What anyone would want to seize on this as a reason to throw a jump-up-and-down "look-at-me" tantrum, is beyond my comprehension.

Lots of Mudcatters wear the mantle. And if this thread is anything to go by, lots are also lacking a sense of humor and irony, not to mention the fun of the "find the mystery guest" part of it.

Many terrible things in the world to get all worked up about. This isn't one of 'em. The reactions have been much worse than the original harmless prank, and a damn sight more entertaining that how many mudcatters have herpes, or liz the squek has fat ass!

Hmm. Nope, can't make 'em work together. Particularly given the damage some "mystery guests" have done to the Mudcat in the past.
